3 ORAL EXPRESSION INTERVIEW OF A STAR Thanks to this exercise of oral expression, students will have the opportunity to practise different lexical and grammatical elements. Student A Student B Student A, as a journalist, will have to form questions using different question words as well as various tenses: simple past, present perfect, simple present and the future. Student B, the rock star, will equally use different tenses to talk about his/her biography, their latest achievements, their projects,... Question tags could also be useful in the dialogue. Revise the question words, question tags and the uses and forms of the tenses if necessary. The lexical themes of the daily routine, the professions, the hobbies, the travels,... will definitely be useful. 1) Divide the class into 2 groups: students A and students B 2) Hand out the contexts and tasks corresponding to teach role 3) After a minute preparation, make Students A meet Students B for a 10 minute conversation. Depending on the level of your students, you can invite students B to use the biographical information presented in the "culture part" making them Bono, Dolores O'Ryan,..., to research information on the internet about their own favourite singer or to imagine the life of a completely fictional character. 4) At the end of the conversation you may consider doing the same exercise again making Students A become Students B. 6
CULTURE DISCOVERING IRELAND, A COUNTRY OF LEGENDS Thanks to this quiz your students will have fun while learning cultural and historical facts about Ireland. 1) Divide the class into groups and choose a captain for each team. To make it easier to run, don't have more than groups. 2) Explain the guidelines: You will go through different activities (video watching and reading exercises). Students have to remember as much information as they can. They could imagine a strategy, for example: A will take down notes about the dates, B about the places, C the name of the people mentioned etc. After each document students will have to answer questions. You can choose to give them the questions in a written document or ask them orally. After conferring with their team members, the captain gives an answer to the teacher. He or she can blow a whistle, raise his/her hand,... that's up to you! The first team to give the correct answer wins a point. 3) The losing team will have to sing a song like live musicians would do in any Irish pub. A karaoke version could be found. 7
CULTURE A. Video watching: The legends of Saint Patrick and of the Leprechaun Watch the videos and take down notes of the important information The History of Saint Patrick Quiz questions Answers 1. Druids believed in the sun and nature under Roman domination. They opposed Christianity. 2. He was kidnapped by pirates and taken to Ireland where he was sold as a slave to work in the fields. 3. The first time he heard God's call was while he was working in the Irish fields. God commanded him to go back to Wales. Patrick ran away and met sailors who accepted to take him back to Britain. The second time was when God asked Patrick to go back to Ireland to teach Irish people about Christianity. Saint Patrick s Parade in Dublin, 17th March He used the three leaves of the shamrock to represent the holy trinity, the three aspects of God: the son, the father and the holy spirit. This video is about 3 minutes long and offers an animated version of Saint Patrick's life. Without being too childish, it will give your students visual and humoristic elements to remember the important facts about the patron saint of Ireland.. He drove the snakes out of Ireland, into the sea. It is believed that, since then, there have never been any snakes in Ireland. English subtitles are available on the youtube link. 8
CULTURE The legend of the Leprechaun Quiz questions Answers 1. Leprechauns are typically depicted as being elderly men, about 3 feet in height. They are dressed in green, with buckled shoes and a hat. In the earliest tales, they wore red clothes rather than green ones and their coats had seven rows of seven buttons 2. They were shoemakers. One of their favourite pastimes being dancing all night long they regularly needed new shoes. 3. The gold was said to have once belonged to soldiers who hid their money in the ground before going off to war. Once the soldiers had gone, the leprechauns would dig up the money and claim it for themselves. They kept their gold in crocks of gold which they hid at the end of a rainbow. 4. According to legends, if someone captured a leprechaun, he would have to grant the human three wishes. Unfortunately, these would generally bring misfortune to the wisher. This video is about 3 minutes and 30 seconds long. It explains the origin of the Leprechaun, one of the most famous symbols of Ireland. English subtitles are available on the youtube link.. Leprechauns are believed to be tricky and untrustworthy. They enjoy mischief and practical jokes. They can be good or evil. 9
CULTURE B. Reading comprehension: The Irish legends of Rock'n Roll Task: Read the texts and remember the main information. Context: If Ireland is well-known for its weather, beers and mythology, the history of rock music wouldn't have been the same without Irish bands... and Matt and Aoife could only agree with that. Quiz questions Answers 1. Both U2 and The Script appeared in a talent show. U2's big break came at a talent show, the Harp Lager Contest, in Limerick, Ireland, in The band won the contest, earning a 00 prize and studio time to record their first demo. The two groups tackled people from all around the world on the troubles in Northern Ireland, with the killings in Derry which inspired Bloody Sunday as well as the IRA bombing in England which inspired Zombie. 3. They were invited at Buckingham Palace. 4. Hozier's father was a blues musician. This influenced Hozier s career.. The Script's music has been featured in television programmes such as 90210, Ghost Whisperer, The Hills, Waterloo Road, EastEnders, Made in Chelsea and The Vampire Diaries 6. Hozier is the youngest of the singers presented, he was born in
