2 Assignment: 1. Use this packet and your unit notes to write a persuasive letter. 2. Your letter will be written in block format and include one body paragraph that consists of 8 sentences. 3. The OREO style is required. Yum! 4. Transitions must be used for sentences 2, 4, 6, and You MAY type this letter using Times New Roman 12 point font. Typing is OPTIONAL and must be printed at home, before school, or afterschool. Do not me the final copy and ask me to print it. 3 What is persuasive writing? Persuasive writing is a type of writing that tries to convince the reader of an opinion or belief. The writing is trying to get the reader to DO, TRY, or THINK something. WHY do authors try to persuade their readers? To change their mind To keep readers For money $ To support a cause To sell a product To take action HOW do authors persuade readers? Humor Hollywood celebrity Tug at emotions Scare tactics Familiar things Bandwagon appeal

4 Persuasive Essentials Identify topic and position Explain what you want or what you believe. Be specific when stating your opinion and position. List many good reasons Provide solid support for why you are right. Be a forceful lawyer and convince the reader! Organize key points Order your reasons to end with your best! End with what you want Tell readers what you expect them to do. Express your attitude Reveal your feelings and point of view. Employ exact words Select precise words to convince your reader. End with a STRONG conclusion to win the case! TIPS: Ask the reader to think about what you said. Thank your reader. Specifically and clearly state what you want. Use a counter argument combined with an example of the weakness.
