1 Lesson 1 Visual Literacy Have students look at the photograph on pages and write about what they think the family is doing. SAY: What is the family doing? Write what you think. Lesson 2 Accessing Prior Knowledge Ask students to choose one photograph from pages Have them explain the tradition the people are celebrating. SAY: Pick one photograph. Write about the tradition the people are celebrating. Lesson 3 Personal Narration Have children think of a time they celebrated with their family members. What do they do? SAY: Write about a time you celebrated with your family. Lesson 4 Visual Literacy Have children draw a flag to represent themselves. They can include symbols that show what they like, such as books or baseball bats. Then have them write two sentences to explain their flag. SAY: Draw a picture of a flag that tells about you. Include pictures of things you like. Write two sentences to explain your flag. Lesson 5 Phonemic Awareness Review the sound of the letter g with children. Have them list words that begin with g. SAY: List three words that begin with the letter g. Lesson 6 Accessing Prior Knowledge Ask students to write about where they see the American flag. SAY: Write about where you see the American flag.

Lesson 9 Using Nouns Have children make a list of nouns. Ask them to name two persons, two places, and two things. SAY: Write a list of six nouns. Name two persons, two places, and two things. Lesson 10 Using Rhyme Have children think of three words that rhyme with blue. Ask them to write sentences using the four rhyming words. SAY: Make a list of three words that rhyme with blue. Then write sentences using blue and the three other rhyming words. Lesson 11 Visual Literacy Have children look at the photograph of the children in the carnival costumes on page 110. Ask them to write what they think the children are doing. SAY: Write about what you think the children in the photograph are doing. Lesson 12 Phonemic Awareness Review the sound of long i with children. Have them list words that have the long i sound. SAY: List three words that have the long i sound.

Lesson 21 Persuasive Writing Have children write about their favorite sport. Encourage them to tell what makes this sport so much fun. SAY: What is your favorite sport? Write about what makes this sport fun. Lesson 22 Main Idea and Details Have children describe a family holiday. Ask them to give the name of the holiday and to list three things they do. SAY: Write about a family holiday. Tell three things you do on this day. Lesson 23 Questions Have children work in pairs. Each child writes a question. Partners exchange papers, and each child writes an anwers. SAY: Write a question. Trade papers with a partner. Then write an answer to your partner s question. Lesson 24 How-to Writing Have children explain how to make something, such as a sandwich or a paper toy. Ask them to give the steps in order. SAY: Write an explanation of how to make something.

Lesson 26 Compound Words Explain to children that Thanksgiving is a compound word made of the words thanks and giving. Write these words on the board: ground, base, play, ball. Ask children to form two compound words then write sentences using these words. SAY: Write two compound words using the words on the board. Then write sentences with the compound words. Lesson 27 Description Have children describe their favorite holiday. Ask them to draw a picture of something they do on this day. SAY: Write about your favorite holiday. Draw a picture of one thing you do on this day. Lesson 28 Narrative Have children write a short story that tells about a child celebrating a tradition. Who is with the child? What do they do? SAY: Write a short story about a child celebrating a tradition. Lesson 29 Poem Have children write a poem telling about three things they like to do. The poem does not have to have rhyming words. SAY: Write a poem telling about three things you like to do. Lesson 30 Reader Response Ask children to choose their favorite story from this unit and explain why they like this story the best.
