1 GOOD GRIEF! Opening Music - <Opening cue School bell rings> All (Everyone says hello to each other) (Everyone runs out SL excited school is out for the summer!) Sally Hey everybody, school is finally out for the summer! All Yeah! Hooray! LRG Now can do all those fun summer activities we ve been waiting to do my hair done, it s naturally curly you Know! all winter long! I m going to get Marci Sir, I m going to stop calling you sir. Pep I m going to draw up a new line-up for the baseball championship! Marci Good idea sir. Linus I will wash my blanket. Schroeder I m going to learn the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. Lucy I am going to open up my own psychiatrist business! All HUH?? Lucy (angrily) Well, who else is going to solve all your problems? (Lucy storms off S wild chatter as everyone walks off behind Lucy S angry at what she just said but also excited to get the summer started) CB This summer I am finally going to get that stupid kite to fly! your in love C.B. Charlie Brown Theme (CB comes out with his kite, fusses with it, attempts to fly it. It fails.)

2 Moonlight Sonata (Schroeder enters and sits down at the piano and prepares to play like a fantastic pianist Lucy enters, leans against the piano holding a list and a pencil) Lucy- Hmm lets see we ll have to have a station wagon, a town car, and a sports car. Our home should be on an ocean with a beautiful view. do piano players make a lot of money? Schroeder I don t know I guess it depends on how hard they practice. Lucy I see well I ll probably need a half dozen fur coats, at least 30 ski outfits and about 50 formals I ll need lots of sparkly jewelry and exotic perfumes and I need about a hundred pairs of shoes We ll have to have a swimming pool, Olympic size, heated, plus riding horses, a tennis court and a huge formal garden We will travel extensively of course; round the world cruises that sort of thing and I will also need a (she sees that Schroeder has stopped playing now and realizes that if he doesn t practice she won t get any of these things) Lucy (bossy) Keep practicing kid! Schroeder How do you expect me to practice with you hanging around all time? Lucy (almost too sweet) I m sorry I should have known I apologize I ll go away and leave you alone I understand your problem completely. It must be hard to concentrate in the presence of such a beautiful face. Schroeder Good Grief! Toccata & Fugue in d minor It s your dog Charlie Brown (Snoopy enters S followed by Woodstock both cross to C the following enter S, cross and exit S ) Sally Hey there tiger! LRG Hi Snoopy, how are you today? Like me hair? Linus Hello Snoopy! Franklin Hey there Snoopster! Pep Hiya Snoop (Woodstock looks at Snoopy and stares) Snoopy Rats Nobody ever calls me Sugar-Lips (Woodstock shrugs shoulders and they walk off together S ) It s your dog Charlie Brown Charlie Brown Theme (CB enters SR fusses with kite Sally enters S meets up with CB)

3 CB Now all you have to do is hold the kite like this, and then let go when I tell you. Sally (smiling) Ok! CB Are you ready? Sally YES!!! CB Ok let go! (runs forward string snaps) AAUGHH!!! My kite my said let go and you didn t let go! beautiful kite. You didn t let go! I Sally you didn t say please! CB Good Grief! Charlie Brown Theme (They exit S ) (Peppermint Patty and Marci Cross to S. Pep has a baseball roster in her hand that she is mulling over intently) Pep Marci, I have to make this a winning team. The championship is coming up! Marci Sir, why don t you talk to Linus and Charlie Brown about trading one of their players for one of ours? Pep Stop calling me sir. Yea, that sounds like a great idea Marci! The trouble is, chuck s never going to give up that kid with the big nose and that s their best player. Marci Sir, why don t we offer him a deal he can t refuse? Pep Hey Marce, I have an idea! I ll offer them a deal they can t refuse. Stop calling me sir. Marci Ok sir, sorry sir. (Pep goes over to phone and dials) Linus Hello? Sound cue Phone rings Pep- Hiya Linus Peppermint Patty here. Say would you and Chuck be interested in trading some ball players? It will be sure to improve your game! Linus Sure! who do you have in mind Peppermint Patty? Pep How about that kid with the big nose for 5 of our best players? Marci Sir, I think his name is Snoopy! Linus Ok, but you re going to have to consult with Charlie Brown first. (CB enters S - Linus hands phone to CB) CB Hello?

4 Pep That s great! I guarantee it will improve your game dramatically! You might even have a chance at winning! Why don t I bring a contract over on Monday just before the big game and we can settle the whole deal, Okay? CB Uh yeah yeah Okay GREAT! Pep Ok, see you on the field! CB Ok goodbye. (They both hang up. Pep & Marci exit S ) CB We re going to win Linus! We re really going to WIN (CB & Linus exit S ) (Sally, Pig Pen, Lucy, Linus, Franklin & Schroeder enter S - surround CB) Lucy YOU WHAT?? Sally Big brothers Franklin It s the championship Charlie Brown! Schroeder I can t believe it your own dog! Lucy YOU BLOCKHEAD! Snoopy (angrily) Woo Woo Woo Woof CB But I never meant to (All exit still angry with CB, complaining to each other and saying how you never going to win the championship game now, CB is left all alone again) CB Good Grief! (Sally enters and sits on bench fussing with her bow in her hair Franklin enters followed by the Little Red Haired Girl Frieda) Franklin Hi Sally, I would like very much to have you meet Frieda. Sally How do you do Frieda. Frieda How do you do Sally. I have naturally curley hair. Do you feel that fall will be here soon? I belong to 12 record clubs. Now that we re getting a good picture on our TV, the programs are lousy! Franklin She prides herself on being a good conversationalist! (Linus enters) Frieda It s rather frightening to see the days go by so fast To say that the grass is greener you know, is not saying nearly enough. Actually, I m very grateful for having naturally curly hair I really am. (Enter Pin Pen)

5 Frieda Sometimes my Dad calls me Ladybug. I used to read a lot, but lately I just don t seem to have the time. (Enter Lucy & Schroeder) Franklin (with an evil idea) Frieda, I would like you to meet Lucy! Frieda How do you do Lucy? Have you ever met anyone before who has naturally curley hair? (Frieda is insulted and exits S - CB enters S ) CB Hello everyone! All Hi Charlie Brown CB Who was that pretty little red haired girl? Pig Pen Well Charlie Brown, that was Frieda. She s new to our neighborhood. CB (dreamy) Oh boy! I sure wish I could go over and talk to her. All Good Grief! Charlie Brown Theme (CB comes out and fusses with the kite again, tries to fly it but it doesn t work. (Pig Pen is sitting on the bench Marci enters from S_ and meets up with Pig Pen) Marci Hi Pig Pen Sir, I do believe you are an absolute disgrace! All that carrier Sir. dirt and dust. You could be a germ Pig Pen So what if I am? (Marci walks off S in a huff and meets Sally entering S ) Pig Pen (Annoyed) Even germs get tired of walking now and then! (Sally enters S followed by Schroeder) Sally Hey what s the matter with Pig Pen? Pig Pen Everyone is saying I m dirty! Sally Well you are! Pig Pen So, I like to preserve water! Schroeder Pig Pen you are a perpetual mess. I can tell just where you ve clothes. been all week from the dirt on your Pig Pen (examining himself) You can?

6 Schroeder (Inspecting Pig Pen s clothes) Yesterday you were down by the before down at the playground, the dump and the warehouse. train tracks you spent the day Pig Pen Yea so? Schroeder And Monday you spent all day at the brickyard, Isn t that right? Pig Pen (Getting even more mad) Actually, I was there up until noon! Schroeder And last night you were Pig Pen I don t have to listen to this. (Pig Pen and Schroeder exit S ) Schroeder (Walking off and still pointing out stains) playing in the sand puddle and then you box. This morning you stood in a Charlie Brown Theme (CB enters S with Kite again, fusses with it, tries to fly it again but it fails again) (Linus enters S dancing with his blanket very happily A few moments later Lucy enters and stops the party cold) Lucy (Loud) LINUS!! (Sweetly) I ve got something to tell you and your not going to like it very much. Linus (Stopping to listen) What? Lucy IT S WASH DAY!! (Lucy snatches the blanket from Linus and exits running S ) Linus (Getting nervous) Oh no! I ll never make it! (after a few seconds of breathing heavy) IS IT DONE? Lucy (Off Stage) Hang on, It s half way through the rinse cycle Linus Oh Man Oh Man O Man! Lucy It s in the dryer! Linus (Louses it) AAUGHH!!!!! Lucy HERE IT IS! HERE IT IS! (Linus consoles blanket and exits) Lucy Good Grief! (Lucy exits S ) (Snoopy enters holding his belly feeling very very hungry, it s way past his suppertime)

7 Snoopy (Wining) I m so hungry, It s way past my suppertime and Charlie Brown still hasn t brought me my supper! Woo Woo Woo Woo Woo Woo (CB enters SR w/ doggy bowl) Snoopy (Excited to see CB) Suppertime!! S.U.P.P.E.R.T.I.M.E.! Oh, it s suppertime! Suppertime! Yahoo it s suppertime (dances w/ CB) Suppertime suppertime suppertime! Good o l sup, sup, suppertime! (CB put bowl down) CB I tried something new Snoopy. Today I put raw egg in you food to give you a nice shiny coat. (CB exits S ) Snoopy (stops cold) BLAH!! so much for suppertime! (Lucy enters and opens her booth for business shortly after Pig Pen enters) Lucy Ah! my first customer. Congratulations! Have a seat please. Ok what seems to be the problem? Pig Pen I don t understand. Everyone keeps moving away from me all the Lucy (Hands over a bar of soap) That will be 5 cents please. time. (Pig Pen exits S LRG enters S ) Lucy How can I help you today? LRG It s really a nice day out today. I have lots of different color dresses at home. What do you think came first, the chicken or the egg? I am actually very grateful that my hair is naturally curley. (Lucy has been reading newspaper) Lucy 5 cents please. LRG Hey thanks you re a great listener! (LRG exits S ) Lucy (Aside) I wont say anything if you won t! (Marci enters S ) Lucy Hi Marci, how can I help you? Marci Well sir, here s my problem. I keep calling everyone sir. Lucy (Still reading) I see. Marci What do you see sir? Lucy I see that someone took the comics section from my paper. Marci Good Grief Sir! (Marci exits S CB enters S ) Lucy Hey Charlie Brown how can I help you today?

8 CB I m so stupid I can t even get my dumb kite to fly and I get so nervous that I can t go over to talk to Frieda. Lucy (waking suddenly from a momentary snooze) Uh..Simple! Just walk up to the kite and open your mouth and toss Frieda into the air and run! 5 cents please! CB- Good Grief!! (CB exits S Lucy closes shop and exits SR) No Music cue (Pep enters S w/ clipboard and whistle in hand going over line up ) (CB & Snoopy enter SR) Pep Hiya Chuck, did you get my message? Those five players I was supposed to trade you, said they d give up baseball before they d play on your team! Sorry Chuck, the deals off, I hope your feelings aren t hurt. (CB and Snoopy hug) T.E.A.M. (Everyone enters running with baseball caps on ready for the Big game) (Everyone plays a mimed baseball game) All CHEERS! YEA!! TEAM!! WOO HOO!! (All exit SR) The Kite Song (CB Enters SR with kite, fusses for the last time determined to fly it, tests the wind, gets ready and runs off stage then comes back out with just the base of the kite, steady s it and then finally at the end it flies!!!!) CB It s flying! (Everyone enters SR cheering and clapping for Charlie Brown) (All exit SR) Linus and Lucy Bows Written by April Wells
