1 1. Close reading 101: try with passage from BNW 2. Focus on chapters TPCASTT one tool for analyzing poetry 4. TPCASTT Ode to Science 5. For next class: read through ch. 15 of BNW and complete the TPCASTT for Ode to Science.

2 Close Reading 101 To do a close reading of literature, you choose a specific passage and analyze it in fine detail, as if with a magnifying glass. You then comment on points of style and on your reactions as a reader. Close reading is important because it is the building block for larger analysis. Your thoughts evolve not from someone else s truth about the reading, but from your own observations. The more closely you can observe, the more original and exact your ideas will be. SLOW DOWN. Check out this handout which details how to complete a close reading, and then give it a try with this BNW passage.

3 What's the deal with chapter 9? Clearly, Bernard and John are very different. However, in what ways are they similar? Why do you think Huxley takes a whole chapter to show readers John s reaction to the sleeping Lenina? Why so much comparison to Shakespeare plays? Why do you think John is so interested in going to London?

4 BNW chapters Quick plot wrap up of your chapter. 2. Character development: who s new, who s changing, who s staying the same? Cite a few quotes to demonstrate character development. 3. Cite an example of satire from your chapter. Then, explain what you believe Huxley is attempting to ultimately say through the satire. 4. Provide an example or two of irony from your chapter. These can be more general, but if you can locate a specific passage that s ironic, mark it and read it to us. 5. What really stood out for you in your chapter? Any thing surprising? Disturbing? Resonating? Share with us.

5 SHARE OUT YOUR CHAPTER FINDINGS As other groups are sharing, add to your notes important information regarding character development, satire (and its bigger purpose), as well as Huxley s use of irony.

6 Here s some context for Poe s sonnet Written when the Industrial Revolution was starting to make its way over from Europe and was really beginning to affect life in the eastern United States. We will learn a great deal more about sonnets another day, but for right now, note that this poem has 14 lines. Even though it s printed like one giant stanza, it can actually be divided into three quatrains and a heroic couplet. Quatrain = four lines Heroic couplet = concluding two lines The rhyme scheme alternates every other line (This is the standard MO for an English sonnet.)

8 TPCASTT Title look at both initial thoughts on meaning and then any new meaning after reading the poem. Mark the poem thoroughly for deeper meaning. CONNOTATION, so things like: personification, metaphor, simile, alliteration, allusion, etc. How do these devices give the poem (or those specific lines) deeper meaning? Bracket off to the side and paraphrase. What s the attitude of the poem, and how do you know? (TONE) Where is the shift or shift(s) in the poem? What about theme? (overall meaning) How might the poem relate to Brave New World and the idea of dystopias?

9 For next class Read chapters of BNW. After you ve read, write out 2-3 amazingly stellar discussion questions that focus on some holistic aspect of the text so far. (holistic = overall aspects of the book or chapters)
