10 Service Dogs They are Invaluable! At one time, the common consensus was service dogs were only used for leading the blind. Nowadays, service dogs are trained to help many special needs people, including children and adults, in a variety of ways. They can help those who suffer from low-glycemic episodes due to diabetes or others who have seizures. There are four types of assistance dogs that Canine Companions train: 1. Service Teams-Assist adults with physical disabilities by performing daily tasks. Disabilities served include, but are not limited to, spinal cord injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Spina Bifida, arthritis and Cerebral Palsy. 2. Hearing Teams-These dogs can increase feelings of security and self-confidence by heightening awareness of environ-mental sounds. Once placed in the home, the graduates customize the dog s alerting pattern to their own particular needs and environment. For example: alerting to incoming s at work, timers on microwaves, dryers and other appliances and many more situations. 3. Skilled Companion Teams-They are trained to work with an adult or child with a disability under the guidance of a facilitator. A facilitator is typically a parent, spouse or caregiver. Disabilities served include, but are not limited to, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, autism, and Down Syndrome. 4. Facility Teams- They are partnered with a facilitator working in a health care, visitation or education setting. They are working professionals responsible for handling and caring for the facility dog. One of the most valued qualities of the facility dog is the unconditional love and attention. All of the Canine Companions service dogs are bred to be calm, reliable, affectionate, and are trained to learn over 40 commands. People with physical or developmental disabilities who can demonstrate a Canine Companion assistance dog will enhance their independence or their quality of life are qualified to apply. It is a lengthy process of breeding, raising, and training each dog. They are funded by private contributions and ongoing fundraising activities.
