2 About Redtwist Theatre Redtwist Theatre, formerly Actors Workshop Theatre, embarked upon its first production as an itinerant company in 1994 with Simon Gray s Otherwise Engaged. AWT incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation in May It produced five more plays before moving to its current home in the vibrant Bryn Mawr Historic District of the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago in the fall of Redtwist s first show in Edgewater, Praying Small, opened in September It was designated as a Critic s Choice by the Chicago Reader and was extended two times by popular demand. In addition to acting, she directed the critically-acclaimed The American Clock by Arthur Miller and the Jeff-recommended plays Geezers and Aura, by company member, Tommy Lee Johnston. Michael s direction of All My Sons, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Three Hotels, That Face, and Broken Glass was also critically-acclaimed and Jeff-recommended. 3 Welcome from the Artistic Director Growth is important. Things are always changing faster now than ever. You can t just stand pat and expect to move forward with the rest of the world. But growing in the right way and at the right pace are critical. And good things take time. With that in mind, here s an update on the vacant space next door to us. Redtwist is currently in discussion to divvy up the space with a proposed gift shop. We need a little more room to grow, and the gift shop needs a place to sell their stuff. We have had a few meetings over the past two months, and one of our primary topics has been how specifically to form a partnership to make the collaboration work. We have offered our furniture, props, and costumes, which can provide some of the initial stock for the shop. Whatever type of relationship emerges, Redtwist is going to stay right here and continue to provide outstanding storefront theatre. We care about one type of growth more than anything else, and it s not size or seats. It s quality. We would prefer to get better and better at what we do, rather than bigger and bigger at who we are. We want to remain in this tiny intimate space for a long time. And we won t be happy until your chair is smack on our stage like the coveted kitchen table at a fine restaurant, with the actors whisking past you, tripping over your feet, and falling into your lap. Storefront theatre has been around for nearly half a century in this toddlin town and there s no reason to expect that it will just go poof. We re gonna do our part to make sure that doesn t happen. Because there s nothing quite like a great drama up close with awesome actors. It can grab you by the throat and take your breath away. To my knowledge, there s no place else you can get that experience. And that s what we hope happens to you every time you visit Redtwist. Thanks so much for coming! 7 I love snorkeling. DIRECTOR S NOTE I haven t done it much but when I ve got the chance I typically stay underwater until I get a blistering sunburn. I love the chance meetings with tropical fish, eels, and yes the occasional sea turtle. Under water is always churning and yet it s more peaceful than above the surface. I can t imagine what our play s unseen title character thinks about life outside the ocean s embrace. It s loud. It s chaotic. Buzzing. Beeping. Static. Noise. Noise. Noise. Just thinking about it makes me want to plunge into the nearest body of water. But we can t do that. We need to figure out how to find the signal through the noise and most importantly the signals from the people closest to us. There s so much interference in our daily lives it seems impossible to simply hear what s said to us. And if we don t hear what s said correctly how can we possibly respond with empathy and understanding? And if we can t hear the people we love what chance do we have to hear people we disagree with? Our rivals? I long for the next time I can sidle up to a sea creature and marvel at their shimmer, shake, and scales. But I should get better at marveling at my fellow land travelers. And try to find the quiet between us. Damon Kiely ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Jake Jeppson writes funny plays that investigate the dark corners of American life. His work has been developed and produced both in the States and abroad. Recent collaborations include the National Theatre (UK), Soho Theatre (UK), Marlowe Theatre (UK), Asolo Rep (Florida), Ars Nova (NY), and others. Recently, Jake s play #BROS, about male privilege and the internet, was a finalist for the inaugural Relentless Award in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman and was listed for the Bruntwood Prize. A translation of the play continues to run in rep in Latvia at the New Riga Theatre. With Damon Kiely at the helm, the play found a new home at Redtwist for its English language world premiere. Jake s other plays include MISS HEIMLICH, FOX PLAY, and THE CLEARING. In 2015, Jake collaborated on the Fringe First winning ensemble piece LIGHT BOXES (Gridiron Theatre, Edinburgh).
