3 Welcome to Redtwist! This is our 11th full season, featuring the theme of Rising from the Ashes, with an eclectic mix of provocative plays that address the concept of emerging from a watershed experience. This season covers a wide swath of territory, from overwhelming national tragedies like 9/11 (Another Bone, a world-premiere by Cathy Earnest) and the Great Depression (The American Clock, Arthur Miller s buried treasure) to highly personal crises such as serious illness (I And You by Lauren Gunderson, the 2014 ATCA/Steinberg-winner for Best New Play) and a cataclysmic career meltdown at the peak of fame (Red by John Logan, the 2010 Tony-winner for Best Play). Each of these great plays will be staged right in this storefront in its own unique way. In addition, Redtwist has invited some exciting young companies to co-produce provocative new plays in our GC series, which stands for Guest Company. Upcoming productions include Norma and the Maniac from the The Orchard Theatre (opens February 21), Scissortail from Adapt Theatre (opens May 2) and The Summer of Daisy Fay from New American Folk Theatre (opens July 11). Check our website for more information about these shows. The Chicago storefront theatre experience is unique and has become an iconic brand worldwide. There are small theatres in every corner of the globe, but there is nothing quite like what has happened here and continues to happen every night for nearly half a century, and it is this: a relentless stream of exciting young companies producing powerful plays with terrific actors in very intimate spaces for over four decades non-stop. On any evening year-round, you can choose from among five or ten dazzling storefront experiences. As we embark upon our second decade in this Bryn Mawr Avenue storefront, Redtwist is proud to continue this unique tradition of Chicago theatre. We didn t blaze the trail, but we intend to keep it hot. In addition to placing you right on top of the action in a great play, we purposely aim to provide a clean, hospitable space, from our lobby to our restrooms to the theatre itself, as well as large, comfy chairs. And so, while Redtwist is small, we hope your experience here is extra-large. Thanks for coming to Redtwist! Michael Colucci, Artistic Director Paint Spatter Alert--sit in this area at your own risk: The first row of seats covered in black slipcovers are in a definite paint spatter zone during scene 3. Patrons in those seats are urged to wear the black capes to cover their clothes before the show starts. The paint will wash off skin but may stain clothing. Please stow belongings under chair skirt. Other seats may experience some spatter and have optional capes. Please leave the capes on the chair after the show. Thanks! 3

Mark Rothko (Artist) Born Marcus Rotkovitch in the town of Dvinsk, Latvia, then part of the Russian Empire, Mark Rothko immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of ten, settling in Portland, Oregon. A gifted student, Rothko attended Yale University on scholarship from , but disillusioned by the social milieu and financial hardship, he dropped out and moved to New York to bum around and starve a bit. A chance invitation from a friend brought him to a drawing class at the Art Students League where he discovered his love of art. He took two classes there but was otherwise self-taught. Rothko painted in a figurative style for nearly twenty years, his portraits and depictions of urban life baring the soul of those living through The Great Depression in New York. The painter Milton Avery offered Rothko both artistic and nutritional nourishment during these lean years. In the 1930s, Rothko exhibited with The Ten, a close-knit group of nine (!) American painters, which included fellow Avery acolyte, Adolph Gottlieb. Success was moderate at best but the group provided important incubation for the Abstract Expressionist school to come. The war years brought with it an influx of European surrealists, influencing most of the New York painters, among them Rothko, to take on a neo-surrealist style. Rothko experimented with mythic and symbolic painting for five years before moving to pure abstraction in the mid 1940s and ultimately to his signature style of two or three rectangles floating in fields of saturated color in Beginning in the early 1950s Rothko was heralded, along with Jackson Pollock, Willem dekooning, Franz Kline and others, as the standard bearers of the New American Painting--a truly American art that was not simply a derivative of European styles. By the late 1950s, Rothko was a celebrated (if not wealthy) artist, winning him three mural commissions that would dominate the latter part of his career. Only in the last of these, The Rothko Chapel in Houston was he able to realize his dream of a truly contemplative environment in which to interact deeply with his artwork. RED presents a fictionalized account of Rothko s frustrated first attempt to create such a space in New York s Four Season s restaurant. Rothko sought to create art that was timeless; paintings that expressed basic human concerns and emotions that remain constant not merely across decades but across generations and epochs. He looked to communicate with his viewer at the most elemental level and through his artwork, have a conversation that was intense, personal and, above all, honest. A viewer s tears in front of one of his paintings told him he had succeeded. While creating a deeply expressive body of work and garnering critical acclaim, Rothko battled depression and his brilliant career ended in suicide in Allison M. Smith (Costume Designer) is pleased to be with Redtwist Theatre as Resident Costume Designer for their season. Prior to this she designed 8

9 STAFF/CREW PROFILES (continued) MIKE AND SETH and MILES AWAY with the side project, where she has previously designed HELLO FAILURE, and F.X. Steve Scott (Director) returns to Redtwist Theatre, where he has directed CLY- BOURNE PARK, ELEMENO PEA, ELLING, A DELICATE BALANCE, LETTICE AND LOVAGE, and SHADOWLANDS.
