3 Origins Established in 2004 by acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Salaam Bombay!), was founded in response to the needs of a growing number of aspiring filmmakers with little or no access to professional quality training in the region.

4 To bring the largely unheard voices and visions from these regions into the broader international film dialogue; Goals To provide economic opportunities for a wide range of film professionals directors, screenwriters, editors, and film technicians; To support the cultural preservation and representation of these cultures through the powerful medium of film.

5 A month-long intensive screenwriting and production workshop in July and August each year that joins East African filmmakers with an international roster of renowned filmmaker mentors. The focus is on directing, screenwriting, producing, cinematography, editing, sound and acting. The Summer Lab

Maisha s programs are made affordable through a scholarship and sliding scale system tailored to the financial needs of participants. Two hundred scholarships have been given since 2004.
