4 1. All or Nothing Dance Theatre Ticking of the Clock The show: Ticking of the Clock is an ambitious outdoor large scale participatory performance project culminating in an aerial crane show. Bringing professional performers and a community cast together to tell the story of our central character in a race against time. Set against the backdrop of her lifecycle and the memories it provokes, time is the universal theme weaved through the show. The audience will be on three sides with the crane at the top while freestanding aerial sets sit linearly down from the crane, representing different points in the female protaganists life. Sound to Sea / Photo: Tommy Ga-Ken Wan Performers will move in and around the sets with the story being played out in the air, on the sets and on the ground. The crane will be used to bring the story high up into the air with the professional performers swooping down towards the audience. The design of the show is influenced by the inner working of clocks, the cogs and wheels, pendulums and pulleys, clock faces. The sets will be circular - featuring swings, aerial hoops, pulley systems where performers can pull and effect each other and ladders for climbing up and over. Drawing on AoNâ s broad experience of working with communities to create performances, large scale outdoor work and compelling storytelling, Ticking of the Clock will be a truly spectacular, outdoor performance accessible to all, led by a Scottish Creative Team with unrivalled collective experience across large scale participatory theatre, dance & aerial events, intimate theatre, high profile ceremonies, crane shows and site specific work. 5 2. Bureau Of Silly Ideas United Nations Board of Significant Inspiration The show: The United Nations Board of Significant Inspiration (UNBOSI), has been monitoring, harvesting and distributing inspiration since We became public facing in 2016, working with cultural, heritage, community and commercial partners to develop a cross-platform narrative that develops new audiences. UNBOSI utilises play with marbles as a resource, engaging across cultures and generations to create accessible installations. Its scalability allows us to work with financial and physical constraints. At its greatest a narrative is developed within a community over extended periods of time, building relationships that work towards celebratory happenings at large scale. Small Scale- Marble Inspiration, Nidus, Incluator (M.I.N.I.) A watchable curio with our scientific team performing research activities with audiences. 3m x 3m space. Medium Scale- The Inspiration Station, our touring public engagement unit, that introduces audiences to inspiration and provides an opportunity for them to be part of the experiment. 10m x 6m space. Large Scale- The Garden of Curious A MUSE ments, an interactive, participatory scientific (theatrical) journey through inspiration that culminates with audiences having unleashed the inspiration in their locality. Large outdoor sites/gardens. Workshops- Marble Experience Exposure Machines (M.E.E.M), STEAM workshops that focus on supporting community groups and members of the public to make their own MEEM s (Marble Runs). UNBOSI is part of Bureau Of Silly Ideas (BOSI) monitoring development programme, which yields tangible results, embedding monitoring systems within narrative delivery. Over the past 15 years BOSI have worked with a range of partners across heritage, the arts, public realm and community organisations. BOSI has a track record of working with partners to secure funding and develop work that has potential for income generation. 6 3. Cikada Circus Cikada The show: Cikada is a presentation of two acrobats who blur the lines between human and nature. It is an acrobatic and poetic reflection of the balance between the organic, the structured and the human. The ideas explored are around absurd insect habits and the contrast to this of the relationship between two present human bodies. There is a graceful, pedestrian quality about the piece which draws in the audience in a relatable manner, whilst mixing movement and dance with pure strength and dynamic power. The acrobatic language between the duo is of finesse and honesty. A fun, thoughtful and humorous display of rich imagery and dynamic riveting movement. With high level, graceful acrobatics, the duo create a world between the harmonious and the absurd. Past audience members have emphasised the beauty of the relationship between the performers, and how the two characters contrast yet complement each other. With moments of hilarity, moments of ferocity and moments of sensitivity, the show is a rendition of everyday life, mixed with absurd insect habits and scurrying movements. Nominated for the Judges Choice Award, Best Duo, Dublin Fringe Festival A pleasure for the entire family, for an audience of all ages. 7 4. Circus Geeks To Be the Best Too The show: To Be The Best Too is a performance inspired by Anthony Gatto and how by the age of 10, he became The World s Greatest Juggler. Told by Arron Sparks and Owen Reynolds (certainly not the world s greatest jugglers) through storytelling, parody, some fancy footwork and, of course, juggling. The show mixes new technique, abstract imagery, narrative, classic circus rituals and a sense of humour to explore how storytelling can underpin a juggling show. The team: Arron Sparks, Owen Reynolds. Director Lee Lyford. Juggling Choreographer Tony Pezzo. Producer Sarah Grey. Type of show: medium scale Audience: children/family People on the road: 2 Estimated cost per day: 1,500 Genre: circus/narrative theatre Shows per day/duration: 2 x 30 mins Artist/company: Set up in 2013 by founder Arron Sparks, Circus Geeks aims to explore and share new ideas with circus. 8 5. Dizzy O Dare Phileas Fogg and the Dodo The show: Dizzy O Dare (DOD) will create a new outdoor theatre show for younger years, combining puppets, Segways, theatre and clowning. The show will be aimed specifically for younger years, something DOD have not done before, always trying to play to a wider demographic. The story will follow Phileas Fogg s latest adventure where he finds a Dodo egg in a far off distant land. Fogg brings the Dodo egg back to London, it hatches and Fogg raises the Dodo chick with help from the audience. We see the Dodo grow from chick to enormous bird which can be ridden. The dodo becomes a media sensation, ridiculed for being different, but the Dodo wins the heart of the nation in the end. DOD have already started planning for the show and in preparation have produced Phileas Fogg: Day 79 and The Dodo Rider, as walkabout acts. The Dodo Rider is a large cuddly roaming Dodo puppet with Victorian rider, who interacts with public at events and Phileas Fogg: Day 79 features two hot air balloons on Segways which Fogg and Passepartout use to float effortlessly through crowds and interact. Both are beautifully realised and have made huge impacts wherever they have been performed. These walkabout acts were created with the aim to then combine them into the new show- Phileas Fogg and the Dodo. For this project DOD will create a chick Dodo puppet that hatches from a large egg, which grows into our existing Dodo. Artist/company will work with performers to devise a textured and playful 2 hander show with a focus on appeal for younger years, keeping narrative simple and fun, playing with interaction, and using spectacular visuals suitable for the outdoors. Type of show: medium scale Audience: children/family People on the road: 3-4 Estimated cost per day: 1500 Genre: street theatre/narrative theatre Shows per day/duration: 2 x 30 mins Artist/company: Dizzy O'Dare are a circus, street arts and theatre company who tour internationally and have a reputation as an intelligent, driven, imaginative and playful company who create high quality work able to engage all audiences. 9 6. Dora Frankel Figures in a Floating Landscape Photo: Andrew Hastings The show: Figures in a Floating landscape is the 2 nd part of a trilogy and the 3 rd collaboration with composer Peter Coyte who creates work in theatre, film, dance and installation. It is an immersive sound, music, dance performance with up to 5 dancers and 2 musicians. Inspired by primarily 3 places in Kent, Reculver Castle, Margate and Folkestone, and referencing the later improvisatory sketches created by the radical landscape painter JMW Turner on his travels, it contextualises them in light of environmental change and damage, taking the audience on a 25 minute journey from pastoral to post- industrial. The structure is a series of scenes or evocations connected by walks and sequences. Text is voiced by a female actor The Artist giving a clear frame to the dance and we are in conversation with a well-known TV/stage actor. Layered costumes will evoke both Turner s time and today and are gender nonspecific. The dance language is physical and emotive and the music using found sounds and conventional instruments is contemporary and accessible. The performance is site responsive. The R&D at Horsebridge Arts Centre, Whitstable in February 2018 reached 333 people of all ages. Our first Turner inspired project was The Unfolding Sky: Turner in the North Great show. It was a beautiful evening and the show went down really well. I thought it was a particularly good piece of work, so well done! 11 8. ERRO Gruppo Jogo Da Guerra Game Of War The show: Game of War, simultaneous with multiplication of perspectives, that takes place in three distinct places of the same street, besides going through its surroundings, is a work in three parts. With inspiration in the homonymous game of Alice Becker-Ho and Guy Debord, and the protests of May of 68 that this year turn 50 years, Game of War deals with our present time and of what we can do in the streets of this May of In the board game, Becker-Ho and Debord, the latter became known for his work The Society of the Spectacle, published the previous year in 1967, two teams make their plays without seeing each other, while an external observer possesses the vision of the game. It is from this disposition and dynamics that ERRO GRUPO proposes Game of War, a triptych, in the streets of the city. Three simultaneous actions are in progress, people must define in which of the three actions they will take part: in one of two occurring, opposite ends, on the street floor, free and with unlimited capacity of people, or in an interior place that, besides offering an overview of the street, also has greater convenience, exclusivity and intimacy, but that has limited vacancies and entry by donating a pound of non-perishable food, clothing or equivalent. Type of show: medium scale People on the road: 7 Genre: installation/street theatre/walkabout Shows per day/duration: 2 x 1hr Estimated cost per day: 3500 Artist/company: The group, through the construction of situations, searches the union of the artistic languages, the performer, the invasion of public space and the dilution of the art in daily life. With its situational praxis, ERRO intervenes with daily flows, the urban landscape and media, looking for other ways to live and to insert the city. Through the search for a bordering artistic language, ERRO searches the exploration of the urban space from its meanings, environments, architectures, speeches and the creation of possible situations and relations between the people who circulate in the streets. Bennaton holds a BA and an MA in Theater from UDESC. He is a researcher, performer, director and author and a member of ERRO Grupo, a street theater group and art collective focused on urban interventions. He has directed and written several plays which have a place in Brazilian s theater and urban art scene. He has performed in Brazil, South America, Europe and in the U.S.A. and has been awarded a series of national and state art prizes. Bennaton currently attends the third year of his doctorate program at UDESC, where he taught from 2009 to 2012 as an adjunct professor of Acting Techniques and Performance Studies. He has also taught workshops offered by ERRO in the urban space. His research dialogues with Augusto Boal s Invisible Theater proposals and techniques and also with the Situacionist s political and artistic possibilities. We will examine gender fluidity and sexual orientation coinciding with 50 years of LGBT+ rights. In our soul train type of activities we will encourage the audience to take part in a parade celebrating freedom of expression through various elements like multiple layers of fancy costumes initially worn by the performers, which will be given to audience members to wear and to partake in the festivities. The parade will have more of a circular character than a linear one, where ideally everyone can participate and/or watch. Actors, acrobats and voguers will weave in and out of the audience and involve them in their performance to finally integrate them into the main parade. At several points a bigger choreographed performance will happen as a static element to change the pace and gather momentum for the traveling part of the parade. All movement material will be informed by the Glam culture in style and expression. We also plan to involve a caricaturist who will make sketches of audience members willing to pose. We have a number of partnerships in place, and space in kind from Centre 151 ( who will also help us to produce the work. The show draws parallels between the robot s interstellar journey and an Indian woman s, sometimes equally perilous, journey into her husband s family upon marriage. The woman s life journey is envisioned using elemental forces, water, gravity, the moon and ceremonial yellow turmeric powder. For both the woman and the robot the journey is final. Neither can ever return home. Building upon previous imaginings, the short film Ek Choti si Asha made for Channel4 and A Little Big Dream a dance and projections performance, Chandini will explore the contrasting lives of women in India with the aspirational dreams of India s young Space engineers. It will explore India s new contributions to space science and some of the current social dynamics that shape that country s psyche. It has never been more poignant to address these uncertainties. Enter The Black Victorians. 17 14. JKart Public art instrument The show: The public art installation, I am proposing consists of entertaining interactive and educational features for groups or individuals. It comprises a 3x3m platform with sixteen pads made of elastic rubber with lights and sensors installed underneath. Twelve of the buttons will resemble different instruments playing five octaves of the same note (depending on the pressure applied by the participants) and four of them in the centre, will act as function keys (loop, filters, modulation etc). The installation is designed to be placed outside, where people can walk all over it and activate the buttons to play sounds, and when collaborating can play anything from Bach to Britney Spears - with the same buttons activating different colours assigned to the pads while pressed. It is designed for up to sixteen people using it at a time. It can also serve as a platform for more sophisticated dance/music performances when used by more skilled/creative participants. It will be suitable for all ages and act as a cross-cultural platform for nonverbal communication and creative participation. Thanks to its form and function it can work as a great promotional object for festivals or institutions wanting to promote related activities. 19 16. Kadam Asian Dance & Music Ltd The Rose & The Bulbul Photo: Simon Richardson The show: The Rose and the Bulbul is a performance piece for gardens combining dance, live music, storytelling and audience immersion with a cast of nine professionals and an ensemble of community performers. Taking its inspiration from the garden design of the Islamic and European traditions, the historical parallels become a starting point for a dialogue between cultures. The historic periods of the Moghul empire in India (builders of the Taj Mahal were contemporaneous with Elizabethan England) and this becomes a backdrop to the performance. Fast forward twenty-first century, the Bulbul (nightingale) bird has fled from war torn lands and flown over the ocean following the scent of the Rose. He lands in a green and pleasant land where he meets the Rose who has lost her colour and zest for life. Bulbul befriends her and together they journey into each other s past to truly understand and respect each other. The Rose and the Bulbul thus becomes a story of love and acceptance of the outsider. It is dedicated to the memory of Jo Cox- We have a lot more in common than that divides us. Type of show: small scale Audience: family friendly - suitable for toddlers through to grandparents. 20 17. Lost in Translation Circus D'Emblée The show: D'Emblée is a live performance with a self-contained set that acts as a visual art installation. The show explores two themes - exterior and interior worlds and relationships. The exterior World is explored through a meta-circus perspective, the external performance persona, and the real person underneath. The outside walls of the set are conceived as an exhibition (with photos and paintings of circus history) and show the audience how the performers present themselves to the world as artists. It is exaggerated colourful, loud, over the top, with interactive elements for the audience. The performers introduce themselves to the audience in their public personas/characters, then invite the audience into their inner world, inside the roofless tent that is the set. The performance that takes place inside the space will be completely different: intimate, stripped back and honest, inviting the audience to see how the performers are as people. Second theme - Relationships based on the close professional and personal relationship between Massimiliano Rossetti and Roisin Morrisexploring how people interact and behave in a close relationship, what are their boundaries and reactions when those boundaries are pushed. Type of show: small scale Audience: children of all ages People on the road: 3 Estimated cost per day: 1,650 Genre: circus Shows per day/duration: 2 x 45min Artist/company: Lost in Translation Circus creates both indoor and outdoor ensemble-based performances, working with a tight-knit group of performers from Italy, UK, Ireland and Australia. The results are accessible, multi-layered performance told through a highly physical language. In the last years Artist/company has been touring extensively in the UK and Europe with an indoor family show called The Hogwallops, while developing 2 outdoor shows in its creation centre in Norwich. The results are 2 very different shows: Hotel Paradiso, a medium scale outdoor family show with six performers, colourful, chaotic and fun, and D Emblée, a duo show much more intimate and stripped back. 21 18. Madame Zuchinni The Hot Political Potato Gameshow The show: I'm developing a game where the public express their views by engaging with & throwing potatoes at Vegetable Politicians at indoor and outdoor events. A veg shy activity, placing effigies on tins in a tent, the lineup can include: Nigel Cabbage, Theresa Maize, Boris Butternut, Jeremy Corntin, Nicola Sturnip-geon, Trumpkin & others as the socio-political arena dictates. I invite the public to question the politicians, knock them down if they don t get a satisfactory answer. Presented as 10 min show or ongoing activity, the Trump character works well as finale. I offer the opportunity to create veg figures that they really want to engage with. I d like to develop it as a part of our democratic processes. In appropriate settings the gameshow could be followed by a cookoff, feeding the politicians to the people. The project has audience involvement at its core. My work invites people to contribute their own ideas creating characters to be part of the show, asking questions. People are often inspired by my creations to shape their own story - and much more besides which may become apparent as the project develops. If politics isn t appropriate, other themes can be used eg celebrities, which I tried once with Alan Sugarsnap, Pears Morgan, Marrow-my Clarkson, Andrew Marrsnip. 26 23. Mufti games One Kid and their Dog Photo: Paul Blakemore The show: 3 performers (Shepherd, Dog and Sheep) set out with their agricultural contraption and recruit sheep for a herding display. Public players are adorned with ears and trained in sheepy ways. Patches the dog is introduced- a former show dog who only understands applause- and child shepherds are signed up for the game itself. Once an obstacle course is decided (made up of street furniture and common landscape) the shepherds herd the sheep around the public playground and into the pen. Design wise the show is made, but we are still continuing to experiment with game play. Mufti Games bring their unique approach to family theatre in public spaces with One Kid and Their Dog, inspired by TV's long-running and much-loved sheepdog trial show of the same (ish) name. It's another busy trading day, but sheep are running loose in the town centre! Only an inept shepherd and their mischievous dog, Patch, stand in between an orderly shopping experience and almost certain chaos on the high street. Could you be the one to bring Patch to heel and round-up all the grown-ups? Made for the silly sheep and straight-laced shepherd in all of us, with opportunities to join the lost flock and for young farmhands to take the reins, One Kid and Their Dog is your chance to play with playing by the rules in public. 27 24. Nearly There Yet The Flying Bazazi Brothers The show: The show is loud and fun and very very accessible. Two characters re-enact their family history using the power of juggling. Internationally renowned superstars Kaveh and Edward Bazazi dance, juggle, and take themselves very seriously indeed. Part cirque du soleil part Patrick Swayze circa 1983, this heady mix of circus, celebrity, and family tradition steeped in history is a real one off treat. Prepare to be amazed, prepare to be dazzled, and prepare to be prepared. We have the tricks and the basic content but feel the characterisation, rhythm, and structure of the piece could benefit from some time in a rehearsal room with an outside director. Type of show: small scale Audience: family People on the road: 2 Genre: circus/street theatre Shows per day/duration: 3 x 30 min Estimated cost per day: Artist/company: We are a circus theatre company and we make work which is entertaining, thought provoking and visually exciting. 28 25. Oceanallover Diapason The show: Diapason is a meeting of two people within the context of all people. Diapason means the whole range or compass of an instrument. Each person is a collection of possibilities and every moment lived allows one or more of those Photo: Florencia García Chafuén possibilities to exist. Diapason will allow its audience to experience the same feelings of creative release felt by the performer who facilitates it. The project draws inspiration from the work of Surrealists Artist Leonora Carrington and a series of mobile sculptural enclosures will be constructed as changing places. One person is invited to enter the changing space where they will meet the artist. Together they will transform themselves into something other, they will become costumed together. Together they will go out into the world to look at all things in a new way. They will make a journey that traverses the given performance site, passing through public and private spaces, allowing the experience to become an inspiration for a series of documentary gestures. They will use drawing, words and actions to both describe and remember what they encounter. The performance is a collection of duets performed simultaneously and cyclically. Each Duet comprises one artist/performer and one member of the public. The duets are performed within hailing distance of each-other and may pass through one another. The artist will perform one character in a continual cycle of eight hours, each iteration of the cycle lasting approximately thirty minutes with a new performance partner each cycle. As each member of the audience arrive they are given a short induction by the artist in the form of a poetic address and then helped into a costume. The costume will be a parallel design to that of the artist and will help the participant to gain a degree of anonymity once they leave the changing place and begin their journey together. The artist will accompany the participant at all times and maintain a dialogue with them that will help them to form a response to the situations in which they find themselves. The participant will be encouraged to discover their own language to express what it is that they feel about their new circumstances. The process will not leave the participant feeling exposed or ridiculed but rather will allow them to share something of the transformative process of performance. For the public observing the process, either directly or as an accidental encounter, this will be seen as a durational work that follows a shifting cycle of relationships between two people, or between one person and a series of other people. You may not believe in magic but something very strange is happening at this very moment.... 29 26. Pif-Paf Theatre TOAST The show: TOAST will be a beautiful musical animated fire kitchen installation shimmering with heat haze. It will see Pif-Paf returning to our roots of working within real and diverse communities and celebrating of the universal eating of bread with friends and strangers. It will be based around a slowly and inexorably moving engineered charcoal powered kitchen - it will carve a space out of time welcoming audiences to a joyous experience seasoned with music, skill and humour, curating meetings and sharings before serving tiny and meaningful taste explosions. We imagine a space of 8m diameter with audience stepping in to take roles and treats over an evening of largely continuous performance. The core of the music will be voice and multiple tubas - the most visually and sonically impressive of instruments playing music gathered from the streets in our research phase. We envisage making and serving a mixture of flat breads and pancakes from around the world as part of the show - with small and sensational flavours added. The crew will be 2 or 3 performer chef musicians drawn from a pool of collaborators we will build - each with musical and culinary specialities. We will work through 2019 in our local highly diverse area gathering recipes, songs and friends around bread in its many forms and its eating. We will discover and overcome the considerable technical challenges of making this communal kitchen bathed in heat haze, charcoal smoke, song and health and safety that we dream of. This will involve developing test kitchens, songs and characters leading to test showings at limited festivals to trial our ambitious and theatrical aims with live audiences before applying for support for full creation for The team: Pete Gunson, project lead and will develop the engineering of the kitchen; Eleanor Hooper will cocreate, directing the work and leading on song with her extensive training and experience; Jack Stoddart - will lead on the musical composition and will be a co-creator - he will be in charge of any meat; Kyle Hirani will support on more complex engineering and lead on Gujarati and East African language and cooking. 30 27. Place to Wonder Dream a Little Dream The show: Dream a little dream is an intimate outdoor theatre adventure for an audience of 20 and is designed to be performed in parks and outdoor spaces. The show begins in a bell tent and follows the journey of Luna who is caught in a bad dream. The only way out of her bad dream is to find something beautiful. The audience are invited to go on a journey around the park to help Luna do just that, lying on pods looking for faces in the clouds, breathing in dream flowers and putting worries on rainbow coloured webs. Every time Luna tries to see the beauty to get out of her bad dream, a black crow appears and she panics. The whole piece is underpinned by live ukulele scoring. Engaging with the installations in the show can lower anxiety and promote self-regulation, encouraging audiences to tune into nature and notice the extraordinary in the everyday extraordinary. The show follows the process of Lunas journey of managing and overcoming her anxiety, children and their grownups are able to safely make sense of their own anxieties and worries through watching Luna overcoming her own. Children as young as 4 are being diagnosed with anxiety so it s crucial to have creative ways for children to learn how to self-regulate and explore these themes in a safe space. This show was performed in parks in Belfast NI in August 18, we had parents say that After the show they were able to use Lunas story as a gentle way to chat about nightmares/terrors and anxiety with their own child The arts Council NI said This show is magical, enchanting and accessible!. The team: We have the whole team in place. 2 actors, director and stage management support. Type of show: Small scale (eg ) Audience: families People on the road: 3 Estimated cost per day: 550 Genre: narrative theatre Shows per day/duration: 4 x 35 min Artist/company: Place to Wonder create immersive theatre experiences for children and their grownups in nature. We invite grownups to play alongside their child in an extraordinary world, using the medium of theatre to encourage audiences to look closer at the wonder in world around them, whether it be listening to the heart beat of a tree, lying on pods finding faces in the clouds or looking for fallen moon rocks in the grass. Through observation and feedback we have found that there is a positive neurobiological effect that happens during these experiences. The combination of the joy of creativity and the relaxation activated by being in nature means the nervous system begins to self-regulate and parent and child begin to tune into the extraordinary in the everyday ordinary, the trees, the flowers, the clouds, increasing wellbeing and lowering anxiety. 31 28. Puppets with Guts Gnomus The show: Gnomus the giant caretaker of stuff and stories unearths unknown facts about historic places of interest and outstanding natural beauty, engaging family audiences through a devised site responsive big puppet spectacle. After a 52-day run at Kew Gardens in 2018, Gnomus is available for touring from 2019 onwards. Gnomus can engage with local landmarks, historic buildings, heritage sites, botanic gardens, and similar as site-responsive work. Gnomus is available as a walkabout act; characterfully interacting with family audiences. Each bespoke, site responsive work uses the performance structure created for Kew, including Gnomus an eccentric bumbling caring character; which is a large four meter high bunraku puppet, operated by four puppeteers. Alongside Gnomus is a human tour guide character who performs on a 2ft stand. Gnomus and the Tour Guide each have four mini rig speakers for vocal amplification; both are very mobile. We consult local experts about the site and devise a responsive script. The resulting performance includes up to six 15min walking tours engaging 40 to 150 family audiences directly per performance, many more indirectly. We find ideas about the site; how, why it was built, interweaving stories, finding contemporary context for the work. Each commission requires two weeks total to create the work; one week consulting, devising, writing; one week rehearsal with puppeteers and creative team. Gnomus has been presented at Kew, engaging 35,000 family audiences with themes of extinction, challenges plants face, compelling a new generation of environmentalists. There are small political party flags that are distributed around the audience when the two politicians divide their audience in half as their respective constituents. Grandiose music tops and tails the performance fit for the larger-than-life characters that are eager to get you on their side. 34 31. Saffy Setohy Light Field The show: Light Field is an off-grid, kinetically powered participatory installation made of, and activated by light, people and the sound of light. Suitable for outdoor festivals and public space events after dark, or indoor environments such as community venues, basement galleries, churches and unusual spaces. Light Field features a multi-part sound score made of the sound of our natural and built environment- from the night skies and magnetic north, to a street lamp or emergency exit. This is amplified through kinetically powered lanterns, which emit a diffused glow that gets brighter with activation. Responsive, glowing beacons of light create a gently pulsing environment. Audience-participants are invited by installation facilitators to interact with this environment, as well as each other. They are given gentle, simple instructions which facilitate movement and play. The installation unfolds and changes over time as people come and go, creating an extraordinary and unique experience for those that choose to activate the installation, but also for those that choose to watch or listen to it close up or from a distance. Visually captivating, with a subtle sound score made of the sound of light and VLF/Natural Radio, the work playfully considers philosophical and practical ideas of contrasting needs for natural and technological light and darkness around the world, and our individual and collective relationship to energy generation and consumption. Beginning in the context of Artcop Scotland,Artcop21 and UNesco Year of Light, Light Field was supported by UZ Arts/InSitu, CCA/Dancehouse, and Creative Scotland. The team: Choreographer/installation facilitator, Saffy Setohy; Composer, Bill Thompson; Electronics, Costa Telelaev, Al Bennett, Yann Seznec, Jamie Grier Type of show: small large scale Audience: festival, family, public art events People on the road: 1 (the installation should be stewarded by promoter/festival own staff/volunteers) Estimated cost per day: 500 Genre: installation/participatory Shows per day/duration: ongoing up to 4 hours, people come and go throughout Artist/company: Glasgow-based Saffy Setohy works across choreography, performance, participatory practices and movement direction. She has made various collaborative installation, outdoor, sited, stage and screen works for rural and urban contexts, commissioned and presented in the UK and internationally. Current project is Bodies of Water, a rural touring commission for The Touring Network. This is a participatory installation exploring our relationship to water through dance, sound and sculpture. Recently Saffy was awarded the choreographer bursary by Saltire Society and Scottish Dance Theatre. She is an associate artist of Insitu European network for art in public space, supported by UZ Arts. Saffy Setohy 0/3 80 Firhill Road, Glasgow, G20 7AL saffy.setohy@gmail.com

35 32. Síolta Collective Seeds The show: A brand new five person ground based ensemble show, sprouting up from Irish roots and pushing the physical limits of circus. Watch, listen and feel the anticipation as a blank canvas of space starts to quiver, move and come alive with the bodies of performers as they struggle to make a mark, fight to be heard and find their place. Remote from each other, a constant rhythm of connection and disconnection is created through incredible group acrobatics, bringing the audience into their game before disrupting and surprising. This family friendly outdoor performance takes place during 40 breathless minutes on a 6x6m area of open space in which towers of bodies shoot towards the sky as hoops explode from behind before crumbling into separate pieces. Mixing moments of beauty and humour the base of partner acrobatics in this ensemble show is a foundation on which hula hoop and club juggling layers beautiful shapes and dexterous delights. It is a contemporary show with minimal use of set and maximum use of spaces and bodies, with complementary use of manipulation props. With stunning big scenes that open up the space, it is rich in imagery, high in dynamics, and wide in scale. Focus and attention is played with, and place and Identity are questioned. Between moments of absolute chaos and blissful calm you will leave this show, but it will never leave you. 36 33. Splatch Arts Y Mor The show: This was one of three of our hugely successful sold shows. Inspired and made by the Cardiff community. We celebrated the changing façade of a historical local landmark; Penarth Pier. With a core team of professional circus artists and over 50 local amateur dance, music and theatre participants we paid homage to the memories shared there. The late groom wheeling down the hill on his unicycle arriving at the Pavilion (restaged as wedding cake) the angry juggling bride ushering people inside to a world of circus shenanigans attributing to its gymnastic years, local lindy hop and tap dance groups collaborating together restaging it s dance hall days, an actress toppling over the edge dripping wet having finished her swim across the channel, an elderly dance group that had attended the event themselves many years before, all supported with voice recordings and visual research collected from the public. We want our productions to have this personal touch, a shared intimacy that resonates with the location whilst also creating a visual spectacle to create new beginnings. This is why we had a 1000ft high wire walk along the length of the pier, 4 aerial rope artists dancing in the dusk sky, a dynamic swinging trapeze performance hypnotizing the mass of audience, cyr wheel performers acrobatically running the length of the pier. It s the community and rich history around us that drive our work, we believe remembering our past helps us build our future. The team: Co-founders, Esther Fuge and Elle Edwards; Core team, Olga Ina Moratia and Alise Piebalga Type of show: Very large scale (eg. city-wide event, up to 30,000) Audience: directly engages with the local artistic community through series of outreach classes, collecting memories from the general public and performance participation. This in turn naturally propels local families to attend. The physically dynamic and visual spectacle draws in youth, young adults, older residents for their nostalgic look into the past of a much love landmark, and tourists. All ages for workshop participation, especially for those who don t usually engage with the arts. People on the road: 8 Estimated cost per day: individually costed, dependent on many factors Genre: circus/dance/installation/ theatre/participatory Shows per day/duration: 2 x 1 hour performance / 45 mins workshop engagement Artist/company: Splatch is community interest circus company that creates site specific work involving local artists to artistically rejuvenate local landmarks. We invite 100's of performers from amateur groups to be supported by a professional circus show inspired by the memories and history of that area. Our aim is to create a structure of a show to tour piers around England and Wales to increase tourism in that area whilst providing a platform for local artists whose collaboration can continue long after. 37 34. Strong Lady Productions POWER The show: POWER will tell stories of strength beyond lifting heavy things, and of power without having power over someone else. This new show will be ready for touring in My creative process has always begun with the tricks I want to perform, the show has evolved from there. My work has always had significant meaning, but no clear narrative, and I am extremely proud to have received funding from ACE s Developing Your Creative Practice award, to explore new devising processes that begin from the story, as well as to expand my physical vocabulary for performance. This project will allow me to grow so that POWER can be a show that tells a powerful story. I have been collecting interviews from extraordinary ordinary people about their experiences of strength and power to form the backbone of the show. I intend to include some voice overs from these interviews in their wonderful array of accents. I am also interrogating my own experiences as a strong and independent woman for threads of narrative. My deep curiosity about the workings of the human brain will likely weave into this journey. I am exploring physical vocabulary of object manipulation and animation (puppetry), dance and movement, handbalance and feats-of-strength to tell these stories. I am keeping the possibilities of the show very open at this stage to allow myself time to integrate new skills and ideas gained through working with an array of inspiring collaborators and mentors including Complicité, Ockham s Razor, Company Chameleon and a Significant Object. Exciting times ahead! Type of show: medium scale (eg ,000) Audience: Outdoor Arts Festivals (there will also be an indoor theatre version of the show) People on the road: 1-2 Estimated cost per day: 650 Genre: circus/narrative theatre/street theatre Shows per day/duration: 2 x mins tbc Artist/company: Originally from Australia, I have been touring outdoor arts festivals internationally for over 15 years, mostly as a Strong Lady. My solo show STRONG LADY presents an array of feats of strength with a playful mix of elegance, muscle and comedy. I am also an acro base and have created shows with Mimbre, Mario Queen-of-the-Circus and Tutti Frutti before touring LEAP with Reuben DotDotDot. In my work I celebrate strength, body positivity and kindness - with a feminist subtext. I am passionate about creating shows that build a deep connection with a wide variety of audiences. 38 35. The Doing Group A Home For Nessie The show: After applying last year, in the wake of Brexit, for the Loch Ness Monster to receive permanent residency status, The Doing Group made headlines in most newspapers after being told by the Home Office that Nessie had no right to remain in the UK. Despite a short film chronicling the effort we went to square away all the relevant paperwork and records, we are now left with no choice but to seek a new home for the monster. Allowing the public to suggest a new home, we received over 40 submissions from around the world, all viewable on our website. People gave us a description and image of their favourite lakes and why it would be a suitable home for the creature. Soon a winning lake will be announced and with support from the Goethe Institute, we aim to aid Nessie's emigration through Europe to her new home lake. Guiding her along waterways, the wetsuit-clad Doing Group hope to inform the population face to face of the monster s transit, quashing their fears of the beast and finding out what the people of Europe can offer the expelled monster in assistance, and Scotland in return. The team: The 6 members of The Doing Group intend to devise, plan and perform the piece internally, but are very open to collaboration. Type of show: small scale (eg ) Audience: We don't expect a particular target audience in Europe, but we are hoping to be able to add a farewell to Nessie performance in Scotland before we leave. We would like this to be aimed at the children and older people of the Inverness area to hear their differing perspectives of the emigration, given the Brexit vote was spilt so strongly along age lines. People on the road: 4 Estimated cost per day: 1,000 Genre: processional/walkabout Shows per day/duration: 3 x 45 mins Artist/company: The Doing Group is a collaborative performance group concerned with the process of doing which in turn produces new realities. In opposition to the stasis of a reading group, this Glasgow Uni-borne group uses performance as a means of inquiry, but simultaneously see themselves as performative odd job people, filling cracks where performances need 'doing'. 40 37. Turas Theatre Collective Remnants Photo: Anita Murphy The show: Remnants is a visually spectacular and enthralling tale of three characters whose lives have been disrupted, and who find themselves alone and homeless. 41 38. Ukemi Ltd (Ukemi Project) The Greatest Park Never Built The show: There is no guarantee how long a site will stay the same before warping into something new. Urban sports communities do not have the same stake in a site that others do. Usage of a site for free and open activity often comes second to developers. Urban sports are disruptive to architecture as they transgress its function. These activities are not based around transport and therefore rarely considered in the development of a city. They exist in a space between sport and arts and are rarely supported by either. The Greatest Park Never Built is a tribute to all the best urban sports spot s (training locations) in Scotland and a critique on how we commodify city spaces. We will collaborate with Scotland s largest urban sports communities to identify the places they consider to be the best in order to respond with an artwork. The project would culminate with an installation. The centrepiece will be an integrated physical model created using elements from each site. Supporting this will be a photography exhibition featuring iconic photos/videos of the sites being used with information about each location. It is a celebration of the each individual site s history, architecture and how urban sports communities transgress the sites function to create a culture. We will highlight these communities and provide legacy by creating a visual library of spaces used for movement and play. Therefore the project will continue to exist as a digital library, creating an actionable and repeatable community arts initiative that contributes towards making cities more accessible. The team: Producer/Artistic Lead, David Banks (Ukemi); Digital Designer, Tim Pearce (Ukemi); Web Designer, Daniel Smith (Ukemi); Prop Maker, Thom Wall (Sorenzo Studios). Type of show: Small scale (eg ) Audience: Urban Sports Communities / Young People / Architects Designers / Youth Workers People on road: 2 Estimated cost per day: 500 for first day and 100 per day thereafter Genre: installation Shows per day/duration: Installation can be open all day. Artist/company: My work ranges from performance to Parkour coaching and design. A large part of my practice is through a company I co-founded called Ukemi. Ukemi is the name given to the Art of Falling. Quite simply; Strong Ukemi decreases likelihood of injury if you fall. We believe restrictions on our freedom to move/play, pacified playparks and cities designed for cars has a negative effect on our Ukemi. We aim to tackle health and safety culture to movement more accessible. Most recently we partnered with Scottish Canals on the Youth Urban Games - an event for over 7,000 people. Our role included design/implementation of the stage and managing athletes/participants. David Banks 22 Aboyne Road, Aberdeen AB10 7BT david.banks@ukemi.ninja ukemi.ninja

42 39. Upswing Catch Me The show: Catch Me will be Upswing's third touring production for outdoors and public spaces. The show will blend a moving and evolving art installation to frame a series of solo and duet pieces incorporating acrobatics, dance and object manipulation. We will be working with an intergenerational cast, a young male circus performer and two older female dance artists. The show is a continuation of our exploration of age Photo: Josh Hawkins and gender stereotypes and will blend circus and design trickery to playfully poke at our expectations of the relationship between generations, genders who is of value to whom, and who is capable of what. The performance will take place in a space populated by multiple chairs (30-40) utilising the ability of the dancers to shift, weave through, over and under chairs, building structures, pushing the dynamic of their relationship with the space and what it says about their relationships with each other. There is an aspiration at the end of the performance that members of the audience will be invited to enter the installation and occupy the remaining chairs to listen to a bespoke composition that takes inspiration from the work of artists like David Tudor and Yuri Suzuki using localised sounds to create a textured audio landscape. The use of sound, bodies, space and design enables us to really delve into and question interpretations of the relationships we see unfold before us. Depending on location the capacity would be between people. The team: Vicki Amedume will be directing, working with award winning designer Becky Minto. We have already been in touch with a number of sound artists and have spent a week in R&D with acrobat Matthew Smith and dancer Pamela Woods. Type of show: medium scale (eg ,000) Audience: We aim to step beyond the usual festival audiences into more socially and economically isolated communities People on the road: 2-3 Estimated cost per day: 1,000-1,250 Genre: installation/music/processional/street theatre Shows per day/duration: 2 x 60min Artist/company: Upswing is a leading, award-winning, contemporary circus company based in the UK. Recognised as the storytelling circus company, Upswing interweaves aerial, theatre, dance, text and multimedia to create fresh experiences with narrative punch, telling new stories in extraordinary ways. Harnessing the broad appeal of circus Upswing delves deeper to explore its emotional breadth and physical possibilities and create world-class transformative experiences for audiences, artists and participants. Presented indoors and out, and often in the round, shows such as Bedtime Stories and Red Shoes have continued to tour since their creation. More recently, Upswing collaborated with humanities researchers to develop a performative seminar, the Choreography of Compassion. 45 42. Ziggy Slingsby Forest Bathing The show: This project will take place in woodlands and parks. It combines live aerial movement choreography with installation. The audience will be able to find their own place within the woodland to sit, lie or stand on specially created structures to watch the performers and take in the woodland landscape. The aerial choreography will be slow building and minimal to bring attention to performers bodies suspended within the natural environment. The focus will be on creating an experience for the audience to relax and be part of this environment, connecting them to their own bodies. This idea is partly inspired by forest bathing, an activity that brings health benefits by calming the nervous system through spending time lying down under trees. Laying down and looking up is a great way to take in aerial movement and the forest canopy. Type of show: Small scale (eg ) Audience: families and local people (encouraging people to use and explore their local woodlands and parks) People on the road: 6 Estimated cost per day: 2,500 Genre: circus/installation Shows per day/duration: 1-2 x 60 mins Artist/company: Ziggy Slingsby is an aerial circus artist working across experimental theatre and visual arts.
