The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo s Street Banner Contest is a civic beautification initiative that strives to engage community members, showcase the beauty of the region, as well as highlight local artists. 2 Words in Motion Submissions for the 2015 Words in Motion are now being accepted! Whether you are a student, a professional writer, or a novice wordsmith, you are encouraged to submit your poetry. Each year the Municipality (in partnership with the Fort McMurray Historical Society) publishes a Heritage Calendar with photos from our local history. This year s theme is the history of sports in the region. You can purchase a calendar by donation at Heritage Park. Visit for more information. Advertise in the Spring & Summer Community Guide! Would you like to promote your cultural or recreational organization in the Community Guide? The Community Guide ( is published every April and September to provide FREE advertising opportunities for not-for-profit community organizations and to promote their recreation and cultural activities or community services. 4 Malanka New Year Dinner and Dance When: Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 6 pm 12 am Where: Sawridge Hotel The Fort McMurray Avrora Ukrainian Dance Society is holding its annual Malanka New Year dinner and dance at the Sawridge Hotel, Sat. Jan. 17, Come enjoy the lively and colorful dancing of the young Ukrainian dancers. There s a fabulous supper including homemade perogies, cabbage rolls and other Ukrainian favorites. DJ Dance to follow. It s one of the best family events of the year. Advanced tickets only, and they re going quickly. For tickets call Crystal at School of Alberta Ballet Workshops The School of Alberta Ballet in partnership with MacDonald Island Dance Academy presents two workshops for the community, led by Annemarie Cabri. Workshop I When: Sunday, January 18, 2015 from 3 pm to 4 pm Family Workshop introducing Alice in Wonderland! Participants will learn ballet positions and skills, as well as create an excerpt from Alberta Ballet s production of the well-loved story Alice in Wonderland. No experience required. Registration fee is $10. Workshop II When: Sunday, January 18, 2015 from 4:15 pm to 5:45 pm Master Class. Suggested age is 12 years and older. Registration fee is $14. Chinese New Year Celebration Tickets Now on Sale! When: Saturday, February 14, 2015 Where: Sawridge Inn, 530 Mackenzie Boulevard, Fort McMurray The Fort McMurray Chinese-Canadian Cultural Society invites you to celebrate the 2015 Chinese New Year, the year of the sheep. You will not want to miss this annual banquet with a full Chinese buffet dinner, live performances, door prizes and more! Tickets are available for purchase (cash only) at the Real Canadian Superstore lotto booth located at 9 Haineault Street. The cost is $60 for adults and $35 for children aged 10 and younger. Website: Suitcases Needed Keyano Theatre Company is presenting Cabaret this February and in order to create the fabulous set, designed by Roger Schultz, there is a need for a couple hundred old suitcases (1920 s ish), old steamer trunks and a few working luggage carts. These items can be donated or loaned to the Theatre by contacting Trevor at trevor.mcdonald@keyano.ca. Culture Calls is sent out weekly on Wednesday morning. It showcases local art exhibitions, events, concerts, as well as volunteer and funding opportunities, and much more. Deadlines for submissions to Culture Calls is Tuesday at 12 pm.
