2 This visual story is designed for visitors to our accessible performance of Sleeping Beauty on 28 December, to help you prepare for your visit. 3 1.About The Camberley Theatre Welcome to The Camberley Theatre. There is parking at the back of the theatre in the Knoll Road multi-storey car park including spaces for people with disabilities. To get into the theatre you will go through the box office and bar. These are the areas where you can wait before going into the main auditorium. You can buy a programme with information and pictures about the show and the actors.

4 It can be quite busy and noisy in the bar before the performance while everyone waits to see the show. The Box Office area is where people buy or collect their tickets for the show. If your tickets have already been sent to you in the post you probably won t need to go to the Box Office. The bar is where you can buy drinks and bar snacks. There are tables and chairs in the bar. You may sit at them if you like.

5 For this year s panto we also have a spinning wheel in the bar! This is because in the story of Sleeping Beauty, Princes Aurora uses one of these. We also have a special little Christmas display under the stairs!

6 2.What to expect on the day... You may hear announcements telling you when you can go and find your seat in the theatre and how long it will be until the show starts. Ladies and Gentlemen, this evening s performance will begin shortly. The ushers will be wearing black tee shirts with Camberley Theatre in small writing. They work for the theatre, and will be happy to answer your questions. It will not always be the man in this picture but every usher has a Camberley Theatre tee shirt so you know you can ask them things. They will also help you find your seat in the theatre. We have male and female ushers. If you need to go to the toilet, look for the signs or ask an usher for directions. We have a toilet for people who have disabilities and those who need some space, plus men s and ladies toilets (also for boys and girls).

7 3.Inside the auditorium You will have a ticket with your seat number on. There are seats for the audience to sit in. You sit in the seat with the same number on it as the number on your ticket. In the theatre, the lights will dim when the performance is about to begin. 4.During the performance It can be noisy when the performance starts. You may want to bring ear defenders or ear plugs that you can wear during the show. Part way through the show there will be an interval. During the interval, snacks, drinks and ice creams will be on sale. It s okay if you feel happy or sad during the show. Some people may laugh or cry depending on how they feel. At the end of the show, everyone will clap their hands to say thank you to the actors. When the clapping has stopped, the lights will get brighter. This means the show is over it is time to leave the theatre.

8 5.Sleeping Beauty: what you ll see on stage To help you prepare for your visit, below we ve detailed some things to expect during the performance. If you d prefer not to know what s going to happen then don t read any further! Sensory: sound Sometimes there are sudden sound effects. Several of the characters can be quite loud or shrill in their voice. Carabosse in particular has a loud scary voice and laugh. Sometimes several characters talk over the top of each other. Sensory: visuals Sometimes there isn t a lot of light, or the lights are coloured. Glitter, confetti and snow may fall onto the stage during the performance. Sometimes characters may hide and jump out quite suddenly. In Act 2, there is a puppet dragon. The puppet is big and scary but isn't real and only wants to scare Carabosse the baddie! Sensory: smells We use haze to make the stage misty and seem more magical. Haze is safe to breathe and doesn t have a strong smell. Social interaction: audience experience Some of the audience seats are very close to the stage. Sometimes the actors use the aisles in the auditorium to to walk or run past the audience. Sometimes characters will talk directly to the audience or ask the audience to join in with the story from their seats. Sometimes characters feel lost, alone, sad, cross or scared. Sometimes characters behave badly, like farting, being rude or being horrible to people. Sometimes the actors pretend that they have been hurt. A lot of the kingdom is magical, strange or confusing.

9 6.The Characters Princess Aurora Princess Aurora is the precious daughter of the King. She isn t your average Princess. She s strong willed, confident and brave. When she pricks her finger on the night before her sixteenth birthday she falls into a deep sleep for a hundred years and can only be woken with a kiss, from a Prince. Fairy Here / Fairy There & Fairy Everywhere The Fairies are kind and magical. They look after Princess Aurora and all the good people of Snoozonia. They work together to defeat Carabosse's spells working. Carabosse, the bad fairy. When she is not invited to the naming day, she curses their child. She lives in a dark lair and wears dark clothes. She tricks Jingle and Jangle the palace guards into helping her with her evil plan.

10 Prince Florizel Prince Florizel is looking for love and falls madly in love with Princess Aurora when he meets her for the first time. He is dashing and handsome and helps save the day when he kisses the Princess to wake her help and helps her defeat Carabosse. Muddles Muddles is the court jester and lives in the palace. He is Princess Aurora's best friend and is completely in love with her. He is funny, excitable and a bit simple! King Cedric He is Princess Aurora's father and has raised her single-handedly since the Queen died. He is very protective, loyal and will do anything for his daughter and the people of Snoozonia. Nanny Nee Naw Nanny Nee Naw is the Dame of the show and is very loud, funny and wears some outrageous clothes! Nanny Nee Naw is played by a man in a dress - an important part of any pantomime!

11 7.What happens? At the Christening of Princess Aurora, Carabosse places a curse on her because she is so cross and angry at being the only fairy not to be invited. The curse says that on her 18th birthday she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die! King Cedric burns all the spinning wheels in the land in order to protect his daughter. The good fairies, whilst they cannot undo this curse, set out to look after the Princess throughout her life. On the eve of her birthday, the Princess is tricked by Carabosse in a cunning disguise and pricks her finger on a spinning wheel hidden in the Forbidden Turret. The fairies promises to protect her and place her in a deep sleep for 100 years - only waking on true love's first kiss. The handsome Prince Florizel battles through the thorny forest to kiss the Princess and wake her up. Together they work with Aurora's friends to defeat the evil Carabosse and live happily ever after. If you would like to leave the auditorium at any time, we have a function room where you can have some quiet time. You can sit quietly or colour in, or read books. You can go in this room during the interval too if you like. Just ask one of the ushers where the function room is. At the end of this show, some of the cast will come out into the bar area of the theatre if you would like to meet them! We hope you have a wonderful time at Camberley Theatre.
