1 Welcome! Hi! Our name is, and we are so excited to have you at our children s show, Destination: Everywhere. We hope you enjoy it! This is a Visual Story that contains information about the show, the theater, the performers, and (BKBX). Feel free to use it as a family to prepare for your trip to the theater, print it to follow along during your visit, or pick up a copy in person when you arrive. There will be time for you to ask the performers questions during the workshop. 3 Getting to the Theater Our show is at the Peoples Improv Theater, known as The PIT. The address is 123 East 24th Street, between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue. The venue is on the north side of the street, closer to Lexington than to Park. Here s a map : Subway Take the 6 train to 23rd St, walk north one block on Park and take a right on East 24th. The theater will be on your left. OR take the N/R train to 23rd St. and cross the center of Madison Square Park to East 24th. The closest PATH Station is at 23rd St. Driving Click on the map link above to search for directions via Google Maps. There is an Icon Parking Systems Parking Garage on East 21st St and Park Ave, from which you will walk north to East 24th and take a left. 3

5 Photos of the Venue The Peoples Improv Theater is a comedy club that hosts many events, classes, and shows! You ll notice their many signs when you arrive. Here s what you ll see from the street and the main door: 5

6 Come On In! Pick up tickets at the box office, which is a desk on your left when you enter: Hang Out in the Lobby The lobby is where you will wait before the show begins. You can also come here during the show if you need a break, or afterwards to meet the performers. 6

7 Eating and Drinking We invite you to bring your own food to the venue and eat it here, at the bar. There will be water and cups available to you at the hydration station : 7

8 From the Lobby to the Bathrooms/Theater About 15 minutes before the show, the House Manager will invite you through these red doors and down this hallway, which leads to the theater on your right: You can also go this way use the bathroom at any time, which is at the end of the hallway on your left. Each bathroom has a few stalls and wheelchair accessibility. 8

9 Entering the Theater This is the entrance to the The Striker Theater, where the show will take place. When the performers are ready, the House Manager will open this door so everyone can enter. There will be someone here to greet you as you enter. 9

10 Inside the Theater Here is a picture of the theater. As you walk through the doors to enter, you will notice the performers putting on their make-up! You can find any seat you like to watch them before the show begins. The couch will be reserved for families with small babies. There will be other people in these seats. You can exit at any time. 10

11 Who Will I See at the Theater? Welcoming Crew: This is the group of people who will help you and the other audience members find seats and answer any questions. They include: Becky Eugene Nick Esti Emcee of the Show Usher House Manager Stage Manager An Emcee guides you through the show, with words! An Usher helps you find your seat and answers questions. A House Manager is in charge of making things run smoothly at the theater, and a Stage Manager is in charge of making things run smoothly during the show! Mimes: These are the performers, who will talk when you arrive, but as soon as they finish their make-up they ll act everything out without words. They include: Duane David Géraldine Blake 11

12 What Happens During the Show? What is the Show About? The show is made up of stories and games that are acted out by the mimes without words. Music will play during each story, and the lights will change a bit to help tell the story, too. A list of all the stories will be handed to you on a written program when you enter the theater. Each story and game has a title, which Becky will read before it begins. Here she is holding the sign for Date Night, which is a story about a superhero who goes on a date! How Should I Behave? You should feel comfortable doing whatever you need to when you are at this show. You are welcome to react to whatever you see, such as clapping or laughing if something is funny. You can also talk to the people sitting near you if you want to discuss anything. Sometimes Becky, the Emcee, will invite you to participate, either by using your words or by coming on stage. This is the only time you're invited onstage during the show. If you need to take a break at any time, feel free to walk through the doors you entered and hang out in the lobby. After the show, everyone will learn how to mime in a quick workshop with the cast! 12

13 What Happens After the Show? After the show, the Mimes will take a short break (about 1 minute) and then they will come back out. Then, Becky will invite everyone on stage to participate in a short workshop (about 10 minutes) to learn how to mime. Everyone is welcome to participate in the workshop, but if you'd rather watch from your seat, or leave the theater, that's fine too. After the workshop, you can meet the Mimes and take pictures with them in the lobby. They will still be wearing their white makeup, so they will not talk, but you can talk to them. That s it! 14 About What Is a Mime? A mime is an actor who performs without using props, sets, costumes, or words. They use their faces, hands, and bodies to show the story. This includes who they are, where they are, and what they are doing. The mimes of wear white paint and black lines on their faces to create a mask. They wear all black clothing and black shoes. Occasionally, they use a black block or chair if they need it to help tell the story. What Is? (BKBX) is an NYC-based non-profit founded in 2011 that collaboratively creates original, contemporary plays through mime. Set to lights and music, our pieces range from realistic to metaphorical, heart-wrenching to hilarious, cinematic to intimate and everything in between, held together by the belief that great theater requires little ornamentation, only great vision. Our children s programming produces shows under the name BKBX Kids!, and we teach workshops and classes to students of all ages throughout NYC and abroad.
