4 Playwriting August 1,8,15 Shakespeare for Kids (and parents) August 1,8,22,29 Greek Theatre August 22,29-Sep 5 What stories do you have to tell? Playwriting is the art of storytelling. One of our oldest forms of communication, it allows us to create living art t h a t t r a n s c e n d s t h e generations. This three week course will offer the basics in playwriting while looking at dramatic structure, character development, and timing and how it is used to tell a story. Students will be asked to write a short scene that will be developed with the group into a 10 min play. A c l a s s t o b e g i n understanding Shakespeare t h r o u g h f u n t h e a t r i c a l exercises. We will be exploring the stories of some of his most famous plays, as well as exploring the rhythm in the text and how to start to find meaning in the language. If the pupils are confident we will also work on scenes/ speeches, although that will not be a requirement for the whole class. There will be a sharing of the work we have been doing on the final week. Kids 8-12 T h e G r e e k s w e r e responsible for a vast majority of theatrical practices that we still see on the stage today. From the use of distinctive stage craft, to the use of the chorus, the Greeks created the initial standards from which most theatre now thrives. This class will be a lecture covering the basics of G r e e k T h e a t r e a n d i t s for mation,f rom staging practices to the evolution of the actor and chorus. Plays will be provided to read.

5 Intro to Shakespeare August 14,21,28-Sep 4 Our most beloved classical playwright, and the focus of this four week course, this class aims to offer an intro to the man who gave us the classical masterpieces performed daily around the world. Covering his life, times, and practices, the bard will be discussed through both lectures and work on monologues and scenes from some of his greatest works. All of the above classes are FREE and will run from 18:00-20:00 once a week at the Garnethill Multicultural Centre, and are taught by working professionals who hold MAs from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
