1 Ballet School NY is the official School of New York Theatre Ballet 2014 Annual School Recital: Guidelines and Procedures To: From: BSNY Parents Diana Byer, Artistic Director New York Theatre Ballet/BSNY The 18 th Annual School Recital will be held on Saturday, June 14th at 4:00 pm at Mason Hall, Baruch College, 17 Lexington 23 rd Street. Please read this document carefully and thoroughly. The information will help you and your child prepare for a successful and rewarding performance. If you have any questions, please contact Diana at dianabyer@nytb.org. For families who wish to give gifts or flowers to our instructors at the recital, please consider instead, a tax- deductible donation to New York Theatre Ballet to help cover costs of the move to our new studio. This gift will enable us to continue doing the work that we love. 2 PREPARATION FOR RECITAL PARENT LETTER OF AGREEMENT The last page of these Guidelines is a Parent Letter of Agreement. The completed form must be returned to BSNY by May 2. BOUQUETS FOR YOUR CHILD The Parents Committee is selling bouquets for you to present to your child after the recital. Small bouquets are $15 and large are $25. Order through the PC and your fresh flowers will be waiting for you to pick up at the theater from 3:15 pm 3:50 pm. All proceeds benefit New York Theatre Ballet. The last day to order is May 28. Friends and other family members are welcome and encouraged to order through the PC. Please contact Susan Lin at susan@levlin.com to place orders. TICKETS Tickets are now on sale via at reservations@nytb.org. Seats are assigned on a first come, first serve basis. VIP seating is available with a donation to NYTB. A donation (separate from ticket cost) of $100- $499 grants donors 2 VIP seats; $500- $999 grants donors 4 VIP seats; $1,000 or more grants donors 6 VIP seats. Please remember that your donations are tax deductible and are key to our continued success. There is no limit to the number of tickets you may purchase. We cannot, however, guarantee seats together if you purchase additional tickets after submitting your original order. Admission is $30 per adult and $20 per child (12 & under). Everyone must have a ticket, regardless of age, even if a child sits on your lap. Tickets are non- refundable. The last day to order on- line is June 11. Tickets will be available for purchase at the theater on June 14. If a guest needs wheelchair accessibility, please note this in your reservation. RECITAL DVD BSNY is having the recital professionally recorded, and we will offer copies of the DVD to families at a cost of $25 per DVD. Please complete and return the attached form by June 13 to reserve your copy. Since NYTB/BSNY is in the process of moving studios, we will not be offering professional class photos with the children in costume this year. We will offer them next year in our new home.

3 RECITAL WEEK JUNE 9-13 MANDATORY STUDIO DRESS REHEARSAL Your child must participate in the final in- studio dress rehearsal during the last class of the year. There are no classes on Saturday, June 14. PREPARE YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILD Read through the instructions for the day of the recital so that both you and your child are familiar with the expectations. Be sure that your child understands that she/he will be getting ready for their recital at home and that you will be leaving them with a BSNY volunteer in the lobby of the theater. Parents may NOT accompanying children into the dressing room. RECITAL DAY BEFORE THE SHOW TRANSPORTATION PLAN Plan ahead for the possibility of weekend construction, parades and public transportation delays. If you will be traveling by bus or subway, check out to plan your route. If you are driving, there are a number of helpful sites such as MANDATORY THEATER DRESS REHEARSAL Each child must attend the theater dress rehearsal on the day of the recital. Children in Pre- Ballet I, Pre- Ballet II, Pre- Ballet III and Ballet I should arrive at the theater dressed in costume, hair and make- up complete, and ready to perform. The dress rehearsals are staggered beginning with the oldest children in the morning and ending with the youngest children just before the actual recital. See attached schedule. WHERE TO BRING YOUR CHILD Bring your child to the lobby of Mason Hall to sign in. An experienced BSNY staff member will meet you and your child and provide further instructions. PARENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED BACKSTAGE at any time. We need your full cooperation to ensure that this process runs smoothly. Be sure to explain to your child ahead of time that you are dropping them off and will see them during the recital. Children will be supervised at all times.

4 ATTIRE Girls: Girls should wear pink tights (regular mesh tights, not shiny Lycra) and clean pink ballet slippers (toothbrush and Ivory Soap work well for cleaning). Underpants are not permitted because the leg elastics show under the costume. Boys: Please check with your son s instructor to confirm tights and shoe color. Shoes: Strings used to tighten the shoes should be cut short and taped inside the shoe. This and the sewing of elastics must be done at home before arriving at the theater. Jewelry: No jewelry, including earrings, is permitted. This is for your child s safety as much as to meet costume requirements. Earrings can easily get caught on the sleeve of a costume and result in a torn earlobe. Children will not be permitted to perform if they arrive at the theater wearing jewelry. This includes newly pierced ears whose studs cannot be removed. HAIR AND MAKE- UP Girls Hair: All girls must have hair secured in a SMALL bun using hairpins (not bobby pins), a hairnet (over the bun only), and plenty of hair spray (to make the hair stiff like cardboard). Do not use glitter hair spray. Pack extra hair supplies for your child. A tutorial for making a proper bun can be found at Girls Make- up: All make- up should be applied prior to entering the theater. Make- up consists of lipstick and blush only. No eye shadow, sparkly base or nail polish. Boys Hair: If your son s hair is long, apply enough hair spray (not hair gel) over the entire head to prevent hair from moving. Bangs should be cut above the eyebrows. Boys Make- up: Boys in Pre- Ballet and Ballet I do not need make- up. Boys in Ballet II and Ballet III should wear appropriate make- up. WHAT TO BRING FOR YOUR CHILD All children must stay in their dressing area until the end of the recital. Please send books, puzzles and coloring books, etc. No electronic toys. Pack a Brown Bag lunch if your child will need lunch (see rehearsal schedule). Children may bring water, pretzels and bagels anything that will not stain their costume. All containers should be plastic. No glass! Do not pack nuts, peanuts or peanut butter as there are several children with severe allergies. NYTB/BSNY and Mason Hall are not responsible for lost, missing or stolen items.

5 RECITAL DURING THE SHOW CHILD SAFETY AT THE THEATER Only performers and staff are allowed backstage. Be sure your child understands that the theater can be a hazardous place and that they need to follow these rules: 1. Children are not permitted to leave the backstage area and must be escorted to the bathroom by an authorized adult supervisor. 2. Children are not permitted in the house (seating area), catwalks or other front- of- house areas. YOUR ARRIVAL Please arrive by 3:30 so that we can begin the recital on time at 4:00. No Flash Photos, No Videotaping: It is a rule of both Mason Hall and NYTB/BSNY that no audience member may, under any circumstances, take flash photographs in the theater or video a performance. We have had problems with this in the past, so please be aware that any efforts to do either will result in the confiscation of the camera or cell phone and not returned until after the show. This is a standard theater regulation. RECITAL DAY AFTER THE SHOW MEETING YOUR CHILD You will pick up your child after the show at the foot of the stage. Diana will give further instruction the day of the show. Please help prevent traffic jams by not stopping to present flowers or taking photos during the pick up procedure.
