Keep up with us online: Seeing Minnesota It's often said that the three most important factors in real estate sales are location, location and location. The same can be said for production. This week MFTVB launches a new location photo database, powered by Reel Scout, which will greatly improve the searchability and depth of information for many of our Minnesota locations. Reel Scout also allows us to collect data about projects that contact us for services and those that choose Minnesota for production. Each location is a unique file with a zip code that is tagged to its legislative district, county and tourism region, allowing us to easily communicate with legislators when there is production activity (and the resulting economic impacts) in their district. This data will help make the case for a more competitive production incentive. Join us on Facebook. 2 Or check out our website: MNFilmTV.org SPOTLIGHT ON: MAGNETIC PRODUCTIONS On June 25, Magnetic Productions took home a national Daytime Emmy for The Relic Hunter with Ian Grant. The show, featuring local adventurer and importer, Ian Grant, was originally produced for the Travel Channel by Edelman Productions. In October of 2009, Executive Producer John Kitchener took over the Minneapolis office of Edelman to launch Magnetic Productions, with the goal of continuing to produce quality programming for national cable networks, building on the success of current series like Bathtastic! and Sweat Equity, broadcast on the DIY Network. Magnetic recently launched a new series for DIY featuring Nicole Curtis, a Minneapolis woman who restores old houses in the inner city. "It's the first dramatic reality series to be shot in Minneapolis," Kitchner said. "We've brought in reality producers from LA and New York to work on it, but it will give our Minneapolis producers a chance to learn a new style of production we haven't done before." Magnetic also has a number of shows in development. New shows, plus the Emmy win, is vindication for Kitchener and Magnetic after the Travel Channel decided not to renew The Relic Hunter with Ian Grant. The company, a frequent recipient of Snowbate funds, is moving forward at a rapid pace. "I think when Magnetic launched in October of last year, we had ten people on staff. Now we're pushing 30, almost all of whom are from this market," Kitchener said. "If you look at how vigorous television production has become in the Twin Cities over the last few years, I don't think you can question whether Snowbate is working. I can tell you it is." INDUSTRY NEWS Attorney Steve Helland was elected president of the board of directors of MFTVB after six years of volunteer Board service. Helland is currently chair of Fredrikson & Byron's Internet, Technology & E-Commerce Group and Co-Chair of the firm's Media & Entertainment Group. Other elected MFTVB board officers Steve Helland include Vice President Greg Winter, Blue 60 Pictures, Treasurer Mark Schneibel, Copeland Buhl & Company and Secretary Trevor Lawrence, Teamsters Local #638. New board members include Dick Crockett, Edina Community Foundation, and Gina Miller of TownePlace Suites. Phasma Ex Machina, an independent film written, shot and produced in the Twin Cities, will have its world premiere on July 16th at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada. The film explores how far a grieving young man will go to bring someone back from the dead and the ramifications of the decision to do so. Fantasia is North America's largest genre film festival, attracting more than 90,000 attendees each year. The film will also screen at Another Hole in the Head Film Festival (San Francisco) in July and at the Twin Cities Film Fest (Minneapolis) in September. 3 of 6 7/1/14 3:44 PM

4 Filmaker James Byrne s new short film, "Dreamer," premiered at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival on June 26. "Dreamer" stars Twin Cities actors Tracey Maloney and Robert O. Berdahl, in a relationship drama about second chances. Filmed last September in St. Paul, post production finished up in late winter James Byrne writes and directs and teaches screenwriting at Metropolitan State University. The Twin Cities Film Fest (TCFF), a Minneapolis based 501(c)3 non profit arts organization, is planning its inaugural five-day film festival for the fall of The festival is currently raising funds through kickstarter.com that will go directly to the rental of two state-of-the-art screens at the AMC Theatres in downtown Minneapolis. The funds raised will also allow TCFF to concentrate their efforts on bringing the associated showcased film actors, directors and industry professionals to the Twin Cities to talk about their projects in order to educate consumers and film enthusiasts about the process of filmmaking. Fearless Filmmakers, a program dedicated to showcasing the work of Minnesota filmmakers, is partnering with the new Twin Cities Film Festival (TCFF). INDEPENDENT MINNESOTA, is a new series promoting Minnesota-made films at the Parkway Theatre in Minneapolis. The series begins August 6th with a week-long run of the feature film Into Temptation, written and directed by Patrick Coyle. For the duration of 2010, The Parkway will devote the first week of every month to a run of Minnesota-made films, each of which will be preceeded by a Minnesota-made short. "I want to support the great work getting done right here at home," says Parkway owner Joe Minjares.
