3 >> Međunarodna selekcija Promene Odabir filmova za Slobodnu Zonu uvek je posebno zadovoljstvo i privilegija. Izbor je često kombinacija želja, mogućnosti i pokušaja da se na neki način uhvati duh vremena zabeležen na filmu. A vremena su takva da je stvarnost čudnija od fikcije. Ovogodišnjom međunardnom selekcijom dominiraju dokumentarni filmovi i filmovi koje su režirale žene. To nije bila (samo) stvar programske koncepcije ili ličnog ukusa - tokom selekcije vodila sam se za Zonu najvažnijim kriterijumom publikom. Filmovi koji su pred vama govore o nekim od najvažnijih tema današnjice iz perspektive običnog čoveka i njenom ili njegovom željom da promeni stvari u sebi i oko sebe. Ta potreba za promenom, oslobađanjem, potragom za alternativama i na ličnom i na društvenom planu zajednička je svim filmovima iz ovogodišnje međunarodne selekcije. Pomalo simbolično, festival otvara film Dan oslobođenja koji se bavi gostovanjem i koncertom grupe Laibach u glavnom gradu Severne Koreje, a zatvara ga film Ja nisam tvoj crnja Raula Peka, koji ispituje korene rasizma u zemlji slobodnih i domu hrabrih. Filmovi u ovoj selekciji su i međusobno povezani proročke reči Džejmsa Boldvina iz Pekovog filma odjekuju u filmu Škola za buntovnike Aleksandra Klajdera o jednoj berlinskoj školi koja daje drugu šansu neprilagođenim učenicima U tome i jeste paradoks obrazovanja - kada ste osvešćeni, počinjete da propitujete društvo koje vas je obrazovalo. I grupa gej Sirijaca koji se pripremaju za izbor za Mr. Gay i čekaju negde u Istanbulu da život ponovo počne, rade na promeni sveta baš kao i mladi surferi iz Gaze koji u potpunoj izolaciji sanjaju da naprave Gaza surf klub, jer su samo na talasima zaista slobodni. Želja za promenom zbog koje mlada švajcarska supruga, majka i domaćica ustaje protiv Božanskog poretka koji većina dobrovoljno prihvata i ne dovodi u pitanje i tako postaje heroina borbe za žensko pravo glasa u Švajcarskoj 70ih ima mnogo toga zajedničkog sa zvezdom meksičke tradicionalne muzike Čavelom Vargas, koja je svojim glasom i pesmama ušla u tipično muški svet rančero muzike i ličnu patnju pretvorila u inspiraciju. Sa željom da i publika Slobodne Zone medju filmovima u ovogodišnjoj selekciji pronađe ne samo svoje filmske favorite već i klicu promene koja nam je svima potrebna, radujem se ponovnom susretu u Slobodnoj Zoni. Lična istina je najvažnija, ona uvek pobedjuje. To mnogo košta i mnogo patite. Ali preživite.kada ste verni sebi, vi pobeđujete na kraju. 4 >> International selection Changes Selecting the movies for Free Zone is always an immense pleasure and a major privilege. The final choice is often a combination of wishes, capabilities and attempts to, in a way, capture the spirit of time depicted in a film. Such are the times we live in that the reality is truly more bizarre than fiction. This year, the international selection consists of movies predominantly directed by women. This kind of selection was not (simply) a matter of program conception or personal taste while selecting movies I had also taken into consideration the most important criterion for the Free Zone the audience. These particular movies address some of the most important topics of today, from the perspective of an ordinary man and his or her desire to make a change internally or around him/her. The yearning for change, liberation, search for alternatives both on a personal and social plane is common ground for all the movies in this year's international selection. Symbolically, the festival is opened by the movie called Liberation Day which portrays the band Laibach during their stay in the capital of North Korea, and the festival is closed by the movie I Am Not Your Negro by Raoul Peck, which questions the roots of racism in "the land of the free and the home of the brave". The movies in the selection are interconnected James Baldwn's prophetic words from Peck's movie resound in Alexander Kleider's Berlin Rebel High School, which is a movie about a Berlin-based school which gives a second chance to unadjusted students: The paradox of education is precisely this that as one begins to become conscious, one begins to examine the society in which one is being educated. Featured on film is also a group of gay Syrians who are preparing for the annual Mr. Gay competition and eagerly waiting, somewhere in Istanbul, for the life to start again. They are making a contribution to changing the world for the better, just like the young Gaza surfers who, in absolute isolation, dream of establishing the Gaza Surf Club, because it is only while riding the waves that they are truly free. Yearning for a change that compels a young Swiss spouse, mother and housewife to stand against the Divine order, which is generally intrinsically accepted and never questioned, is what makes her the heroine of the fight for women s suffrage in Switzerland of the seventies, has a whole lot in common with the star of Mexican traditional music Chavela Vargas, who has, transforming her personal suffering into inspiration, entered the typically male world of ranchera music. Wishing for the audience of this year's Free Zone to find, amongst these movies, not only their film favorites, but also a grain of change that we all need, I am looking forward to new encounters in the Free Zone. "Being true to yourself is what's most important, it always wins. It comes with a great cost and suffering. But you survive. When you are loyal to yourself, you are the winner in the end". 5 >> Regionalna selekcija >> Regional selection U okviru regionalnog takmičarskog programa 13. izdanja Slobodne Zone prikazaćemo 10 dugometražnih i 10 kratkometražnih dokumentranih, igranih i eksperimentalnih filmova pod nazivom Ka kolektivnoj nežnosti. U pitanju su strukturalno i tematski različita ostvarenja koje spaja momenat nežnosti u autorskom pristupu izražen kroz borbu za ravnopravnost i slobodu. Svi dugometražni biće praćeni po jednim kratkim filmom u nameri da se poveća vidljivost kvalitetnih kratkih ostvarenja iz regiona. Pored afirmisanih reditelja čiji su filmovi prikazani na prestižnim svetskim festivalima poput Kana, Berlina i Lokarna, odlučili smo da našoj publici otkrijemo mlade i precizne autore koji svojim hrabrim filmskim jezikom polako utiču na svet filma. Ove godine ćemo imati 12 srpskih, 4 regionalne i 4 internacionalne premijere. Pozivamo publiku da gleda filmove, aktivno učestvuje u razgovorima nakon njih i pomogne da i ove godine pomerimo granice Slobodne Zone. S poštovanjem, Jelena Maksimović i Ivan Bakrač selektori regionalnog programa Slobodne Zone As part of the regional competition program of the 13 th Free Zone Film Festival we ll screen 10 long and 10 short documentary, fiction and experimental films under the title Towards Collective Tenderness. The films differ in themes and structure, but share a touch of tenderness in authors' approach expressed through the fight for equality and freedom. Each long film will be followed by a short one in order to increase the visibility of the quality of short works from the region. Besides the well-established directors whose films have appeared at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin or Locarno, we decided to pres- ent to our audience young authors whose precise and brave cinematic voices have just started impacting the world of film. This year we ll have 12 Serbian, 4 regional and 4 international premiers. We d like to invite the audience to watch the movies, actively participate in the discussions that will follow and help move the borders of Free Zone once again. 6 >> Gost selektor predstavlja Tri selektorska uzbuđenja Kao što Slobodna Zona nije običan filmski festival, tako ni neko kome je ukazana čast da bude njegov gost selektor ne može da se ponaša kao običan selektor, jer je svestan specifičnog fokusa Slobodne Zone. Ali opet, ima jedan kriterijum koji svaka relevantna kritička selekcija mora da zadovolji: film koji nije zanatski dobar, te još važnije: koji nije uzbudljivo i pomerajuće gledalačko iskustvo, u osnovi je reakcionaran čak i ako promoviše ne znam koliko progresivne ciljeve i stavove ili možda pogotovo baš tada. Nastojao sam da iz ponuđenog mi materijala izaberem upravo filmove koji su meni kao gledaocu ponudili tu vrstu uzbuđenja. U filmu Ada za gradonačelnicu reditelja Pau Fausa pratimo jednu naizgled nemoguću misiju : uspon Ade Kolau, građanske aktivistkinje bez ikakvog relevantnog političkog iskustva i bez partijskog i uopšte institucionalnog zaleđa, sve do pozicije gradonačelnice Barselone, velikog, moćnog, fascinantnog grada s godišnjim budžetom od nekoliko milijardi evra. Ada i njen tim, sastavljen mahom od aktivističkih kolega, a ne od PR magova i ostalih prodavaca magle, kreće u ovu bobu bez mnogo nade da može da pobedi, ali s rešenošću da učini sve što može, pa i više od toga, da razbije okoštale upravljačke strukture i ponudi kredibilnu alternativu u vidu grassroots građanske platforme koja će polaziti od stvarnih i neposrednih interesa običnih građana. Ono što fascinira, ali je i poučno i nužno nam nameće izvesne paralele, upravo je filmska ličnost i nehinjeni šarm Ade Kolau: njena savršena običnost i istovremeno jak magnetizam, harizma u kojoj nema ničega autoritativnog, nego je bazirana na kredibilitetu, na uverenju potencijalnog birača, baš kao i gledaoca ovog filma, da je Ada jedna od nas, mada u isto vreme i posebna, utoliko što je sposobna i voljna da jedno difuzno, neretko i konfuzno građansko nezadovoljstvo korumpiranim establišmentom i istrošenim političko-ekonomsko-urbanističkim obrascima preobrazi u novu, drugačiju politiku. Jer, rešenje bilo kojeg političkog i društvenog problema nikada nije u ispraznom nihilizmu antipolitičnosti, nego u redefinisanoj političnosti, vraćenoj što bliže izvoru vlastitog legitimiteta. Film Čavela Ketrinf Gund i Dereše Kjui naizgled je još jedan od bezbroj muzičkih dokumentaraca, žanra koji je poslednjih godina u velikoj ekspanziji, i komercijalna je branša za sebe, ne tako retko cinično eksploatišući živote i dela umetnika, to jest, parazitirajući na njihovoj slavi bez ikakvog istinskog doprinosa njihovom boljem razumevanju. Ali, Čavela ne ide tim lagodnijim putem, mada uspeva da zadovolji sve važne i smislene standarde muzičko-biografskog dokumentarca, približavajući novoj publici uzbudljivu muziku latinoameričke dive i jasno osvetljavajući njeno zaleđe, kako kulturno, tako i intimno. Čavela je, međutim, u svom najvažnijem sloju film o pravu jedinke na različitost i na slobodan život, bez nametnutog straha i krivice zbog onoga što jeste. Čavela Vargas je, bez bilo kakve svesne namere da to bude, postala jedan od simbola oslobođene ženske homoseksualnosti, i to ovaj film naglašava na pravi način, ne potencirajući njenu aktivističku ulogu, jer toga nije ni bilo: Čavela Vargas je umetnica i nesavršeno, kontradiktorno ljudsko biće; ona se ne uklapa u patrijarhalne i građanske standarde ne zato što je tako odlučila i jer je tako šik, nego zato što je u njih prosto neuklopiva. Ma koliko nam se čini da imamo istorijski pregled rasnog pitanja u SAD-u glavi, bogat arhivski materijal filma Ja nisam tvoj crnja scenariste i reditelja Raula Peka ipak nas ostavlja pomalo zatečenim: eksplicitnost rasističkog jezika, divljina mržnje, dubina predrasuda, težina okova koje je valjalo raskinuti, gorak ukus uzaludnosti borbe za elementarnu građansku ravnopravnost, istovremeno ipak i svest da se tim putem mora proći, podnoseći svaku žrtvu koju nije moguće izbeći. Dubina koliko i oštrina, suptilnost i sveobuhvatnost spisateljskog uvida Džejmsa Boldvina čiji je naratorski glas u ovom filmu nezaboravno interpretirao Semjuel L. Džekson i majstorstvo njegovog poretretiranja ikoničkih ličnosti poput Martina Lutera Kinga ili Malkolma X čine ovaj film izuzetnim i uzbudljivim ostvarenjem, udaljenim od bilo kakvog politički korektnog rutinerstva. 7 >> Guest selector presents Three selector s thrills Just as the Free Zone isn t just an ordinary film festival, someone who was granted the honor of being its guest selector, isn t supposed to behave like an ordinary selector, because that person should be aware of the Free Zone s very specific focus. But then again, there s one criterion every relevant critical selection must meet: a film that s not professionally skillfully made, and, more importantly, that s not an exciting and moving viewing experience, is by default reactionary, even if it promotes incredibly progressive goals and points of view - or maybe especially in that case. Out of the material that was offered to me, I did my best to choose the films that gave me, as a viewer, that sort of thrill. In the film called Ada For Mayor, directed by Pau Faus, we re following a seemingly mission impossible, the rise of Ada Colau, a civil rights activist, without any relevant political experience and generally without any kind of institutional or political party support, until she reaches the post of the city mayor of Barcelona, a big, mighty, fascinating city with an annual budget of several billion euros. Ada and her team, which mostly consists of fellow activists, and not some PR gurus and other Nonetheless, Chavela is, at its most important layer, a film about a personal right of an individual to diversity and free life, without being forced to fear and feel guilty, for the way you are. Chavela Vargas has become, without any intention, one of the symbols of liberated female homosexuality, and this film emphasizes this in the right way, without stressing her role as an activist, because there was none of that: Chavela Vargas is an artist and an imperfect, contradictory human being; she doesn t meet the patriarchal and civic stanfrauds, sets out to this struggle without much hope that she can win, but with the determination to do whatever they possibly can, and even more than that, to break down the rotten administrative structures and offer a credible alternative, in the form of a grassroots civic platform which would start out from real and direct needs of ordinary citizens. What not only fascinates, but also teaches a lesson, and necessarily makes us draw parallels, is exactly the filmish personality and unfeigned charm of Ada Colau, her perfect ordinarity, and at the same time strong magnetism, charisma that has nothing authoritative about it, but is based on credibility, on potential voters conviction, and that of the film s viewer, that Ada is one of us, although at the same time also special, because she is capable and willing to turn a diffuse, often even confused citizens discontent with the corrupt establishment and decaying political-economical-urbanist patterns, into a new, different policy. Because a solution for any political or social problem never lies in void nihilism of being antipolitical, but rather in redefining politics, taken back to the source of its own legitimacy, as close as possible. Chavela, the film made by Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi is seemingly just one among numerous musical documentaries, a genre that has boomed in the past few years and is a commercial branch, a genre that quite often cynically exploits the lives and works of artists, feeding like parasites on their fame without giving any true contribution to their better understanding. However, Chavela doesn t take that easy road, although it manages to meet all important and meaningful standards set for a musical-biographic documentary, introducing new audiences to the music of the Latin-American diva, shedding bright light on her background, cultural, as well as personal. dards, not because she decided not to, and because that s super chic, but because she s simply not able to. As much as we think that we have a historical insight into the racial issue in the USA, the abundant archivalia of the film I Am Not Your Negro, directed and written by Raoul Peck, still leaves us stunned: the explicit racist language, the violence of hatred, the profundity of prejudice, the weight of chains that had to be broken, the bitter taste of the futile struggle for fundamental civil equality, with full awareness that that road had to be taken, making all the unavoidable sacrifices. The depth, as much as the sharpness, the subtlety, and the comprehensiveness of James Baldwin s writer s insight - whose narrator s voice was unforgettably interpreted by Samuel L. Jackson - and the craftsmanship of his portrayal of iconic historical figures such as Martin Luther King or Malcolm X, make this movie a thrilling and extraordinary achievement, far from any politically correct routine job. 8 >> Noćni razgovori Slobodne Zone Angažovani film svoja značenja upućuje izvan sebe. On, utoliko, traži formu za unapred dati sadržaj za delovanje, za ideju, za zadatu stvarnost. Razgovarati o angažovanom filmu znači drugim sredstvima, drugim jezikom, zahvatiti odaslata značenja i preneti ih dalje. Noćni razgovori su, utoliko, karika u ulančavanju znakova što ih sam film proizvodi. Kao karika u prenošenju značenja, ni govor o angažovanom filmu ne može biti neangažovan, ili neutralan, te se od komentatora filmova ne očekuje da budu iznad, ispod, ili po strani značenja koje nudi sam film. Angažovanje zahteva učešće. Zbog toga su sagovornici u Noćnim razgovorima uvek već upleteni, na jedan ili drugi način, u sadržaj koji film zahvata. Samim tim ova forma filmskog festivala dopušta da se pojam angažovanja iznova artikuliše, da se progovori o njegovim dometima i njegovoj nosivosti u sadašnjem trenutku, u ovom i ovakvom društvu, bez obzira iz kojeg dela sveta dolazi film. Film, naime, ako je dobar, ako je važan, prisiljava na govor. Reči produbljuju filmske slike, ili ističu ništavnost na koju one upućuju. Ako brutalno izreknemo ono što vidimo, ili ono što smo shvatili, recimo: Država ravnodušna prema mukama svojih građana rđava je država koja se, svojim činjenjem ili nečinjenjem, okreće protiv svojih građana, što bi bilo jedno od iščitanih značenja filma Roberta Tomića Zubera Život od milijun dolara, ako, dakle, to kažemo na ovaj način, ako makar opišemo to što smo videli, ne samo da nismo okrnjili učinak filma, već smo produbili sliku, načinili je još brutalnijom, izoštrili je, približili. Iza angažovanog filma, ako vredi, ne sme da odjekne ćutanje, čak i ako smo šokirani onim što smo videli. Angažovani film, čak i ako nas postidi, čak i ako nam prevrne utrobu, čak i ako nam na čas oduzme dah, naprosto zabranjuju da pognemo glavu i da ćutimo. Ćutanje je saučestvovanje u nepravdi. Ni posle Aušvica nismo sebe osudili na ćutanje iako bi ta kazna bila primerena zločinu već smo cedili reči nastojeći da dopremo do nemislivog. Sagovornici Zone ne razgovaraju naprosto o filmovima, ne govore o njihovom estetskom dometu, ne prosuđuju o filmskim elementima filma, već nastoje da razviju motive koji su film pokrenuli i koje su filmovi obuhvatili. Govor filma prenesen u drugu vrstu govora zadržava se u javnoj sferi i na taj način deluje. Razgovori, kao tumačenje tumačenja, razvijaju ono što su filmovi zahvatili i obuhvatili, oni ekspliciraju ono što filmovi impliciraju. Film to pokazuje. Bez konkretnog angažovanja nema ni mira, ni prestanka bola. Kao što ni bola ne bi bilo bez konkretnog (a ne apstraktnog) nanošenja toga bola. Najzad, kroz film Alaksandera Klajdera Škola za buntovnike, Noćni razgovori postavljaju pitanje kako organizovati jednu političku zajednicu danas, koja bi nasilje svela na najmanju moguću meru, u vremenu krize Evrope (i kao ideje i kao jasno definisanog geografskog i političkog prostora), a posle jako dobrih sedamdesetak godina kakve Evropa u svojoj istoriji ne pamti? Kako, dakle, kada jačaju desničarske organizacije natopljene primitivizmom, oboružane opasnim mitovima, zaogrnute ubilačkim identitetima, kako obrazovati građanina koji bi bio u stanju da se nosi ne samo s ubilačkim idejama, već i sa raznovrsnošću nevolja s koji- ma se suočava? Problem obrazovanja, jedan od najstarijih problema koji ne prestaje da zaokuplja (preostalu) savest, u središtu je rušilačkog talasa koji se, danas i ovde, ne zaustavlja. Grupa neortodoksnih profesora i još manje ortodoksnih učenika, u vrlo neortodoksnoj školi (koja ne može da angažuje čak ni tetkice za elementarno održavanje) nalazi se na istom mestu i rade na istom zadatku: stvoriti građanina koji je u stanju da preuzme odgovornost kako za sebe tako i za druge. 9 >> Late Night Conversations Engaged film addresses its meaning beyond itself. It, therefore, seeks form for a predetermined content for action, the ideas, and assigned reality. To talk about engaged film is to seize the meanings it dispatches by other means, other language, and pass them on. Late Night Conversations are therefore a link in a chain of symbols brought forth by a film. Being a link in conveying meaning, a discussion on the topic of engaged film rules out the possibility of neutrality or passivity, so a moderator can't be expected to be above below or aside the meaning offered by the film itself. Being engaged means taking an active role. That is exactly why participants of the Late Night Conversations are always already entangled in one way or another in the content covered by the film. That is why this form of a film festival allows the possibility of redefining the term engaged, of discussing its limits and its capacity at present, in this society and the likes of it, regardless of its country of origin. A good film, if relevant, always demands a vocal reaction. Words deepen the meaning of film images, or simply accentuate the nihility they hint at. If we bluntly describe what we have seen or perceived with brutal honesty, for example: The state indifferent to the sufferings of its people is a bad country that, through its actions or rather its lack thereof, turns itself against its citizens which could be one of the possible interpretations of Robert Tomić Zuber's film Million Dollar Life, if we speak in this manner, if we at least try to describe what we've seen, it doesn't mean that we've impaired the power of the film, but rather that we have further deepened the picture, made it clearer, better recognizable. If an engaged film is good, the reaction to it can never be silence, even if we have been shocked by what we have just seen. Even if it makes us feel ashamed, disgusted or speechless, an engaged film simply forbids us to bow our heads down in silence. Silence in the face of injustice is complicity with the oppressor. Even after Auschwitz, we couldn't and didn't remain silent even though that penalty would've probably been the most fitting to the crime, but rather we have clung to words in our quest to reach the unimaginable. Instead of just talking about films, their aesthetic capacity and the technicality of their elements, participants of this festival strive to further develop motives that have set the film in motion and that have been encompassed by the films. The language of film translated into other type of speech remains in public consciousness and that is how it takes effect. Conversations, as interpretations of other inter- pretations, further develop the ideas presented in the films and elucidate what the films imply. In the process of translation from one medium of expression (a moving image) into another (speech) many different insights can arise which can aptly be illustrated through the question posed by a psychologist from Alen Drljević's film Men Don t Cry: We have to condemn all crimes committed in the Yugoslav wars for an abstract condemnation of all crimes committed by the military regime is a complete depoliticization, anesthetization- a temporary removal of pain which promptly returns soon thereafter due to the very abstract and ineffective nature of the remedy. That is exactly what the film shows. Without definite engagement in an issue there can be no peace nor will the pain cease just as there would have been no pain without a tangible (not abstract) inflicting of that pain. Finally, through Alexander Kleider's film Berlin Rebel High School, Late Night Conversation seek an answer to the question on how to organize a political community today, one that would reduce violence to the lowest possible extent, at a time of crisis in Europe (both as an idea and as a precisely defined geographical and political space), after exceptionally good seventy years that Europe has ever had in the history of its existence. How can this be done when extreme rightist organizations are gaining strength, filled with primitivism, armed with dangerous myths and cloaked in murderous identities, how can a citizen be educated to be able to cope not only with these murderous ideas, but also with the huge spectrum of problems that he faces every day? The issue of education, one of the oldest issues that has occupied our conscience (or at least what's left of it) is in the centre of a destructive wave which will not stop here and now. A group of unorthodox teachers and even less orthodox students in an extremely unorthodox school (that can't even employ cleaners to uphold a basic standard of maintenance) are all in the same position working towards the same goal: creating a citizen who is capable of accepting full responsibility for both himself and others. Takođe je spoljni saradnik za Euroimages, MEDIA programe Kreativne Evrope i član je selekcione komisije italijanskog nacionalnog fonda MIBACT. Urednik je u međunarodnim koprodukcijama, regrutovala je nekolicinu evropskih talenata i učestvovala je u razvoju njihovih dugometražnih projekata. Jelena Angelovski završila je glumu na Akademiji umetnosti i MA na Fakultetu političkih nauka sa fokusom na politikama razlika. Poslednjih petnaest godina radi u kreativnim industrijama, dok je u oblasti filma posvećena radu na realizaciji nezavisnih ostvarenja producirala je svoj debitanski film Vetar Tamare Drakulić, prikazanog na festivalima u Torinu, Geteborgu, Buenos Airesu. Vladan Petković (rođen u Beogradu 1978.godine) je novinar, filmski kritičar, festivalski selektor, prevodilac i predavač. Takođe je dopisnik sa teritorije bivše Jugosavije za Screen International i Cineeuropu. Za mnoge časopise i vebsajtove redovno objavljuje vesti, recenzije, intervjue i analize marketa. Jedan je od selektora Cinema City filmskog festivala u Novom Sadu, Skopje filmskog festivala i Mostar filmskog festivala. Gostujući selektor i savetnik je na mnogobrojnim međunarodnim filmskim festivalima širom Evrope. Simona Nobile works as a script consultant, screenwriter and trainer for Italian and international production companies, European training programmes and EU funding bodies. She is external expert for Eurimages, Creative Europe MEDIA Programme and member of the Selection Committee of the Italian MIBACT (public national funding). Working as a story editor for international co-productions, she has been responsible for the scouting of several European talents and the development of their feature projects. Jelena Angelovski graduated from the Academy of Arts, department of acting and she has MA degree from/of the Faculty of political sciences with the focus on political differences. She has been working in the creative industries for the past 15 years, while in the film industry she is mostly dedicated to independent filmmaking. In 2016 she produced her debut film Wind directed by Tamara Drakulic which was screened at the numerous international film festivals. She is currently involved in the production of many regional documentary and feature films. From 2017 she works as a producer at the DigitalKraft. Vladan Petkovic (born in Belgrade in 1978) is a journalist, film critic, festival programmer, translator and educator. He is the correspondent for the territories of former Yugoslavia for Screen International and Cineuropa, and regularly writes news, reviews, interviews, and market analyses for various magazines and websites. He is a programmer for the Cinema City Film Festival in Novi Sad (Serbia), Skopje Film Festival (Macedonia), and Mostar Film Festival (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and contributes as guest programmer and advisor for numerous international film festivals around Europe Filmski festival Slobodna zona 23

His first mid-length film Abdul & Hamza, was in competition in 2015 edition of FID Marseille, winning Special mention of the jury in first film competition. In 2016, as a part of the Looking China project, he made a short docu-fiction film called Stars of Gaomeigu. 21 >> Sinopsis Dane i Daut su se prvi put upoznali tokom devetesetih, dok je trajao rat u Bosni. Sreli su se na prvoj borbenoj liniji za vreme napada vojske Republike Srbije na bosansko selo blizu Srebrenice. Daut je bio jedan od vojnika koji su pucali na Dana. Tek po završetku rata saznaje se da je Dane preživeo i oni se igrom slučaja ponovo sreću. Tu počinje njihovo prijateljstvo. Danas, iako su ožiljci rata još uvek duboki, kao i tragovi koje je rat ostavio na području oko Srebrenice, Dane i Daut rade zajedno kako bi preživeli u sadašnjoj teškoj ekonomskoj situaciji koja razdvaja i dalje nezalečenu Bosnu, čak i nakon dve decenije od rata. Dane and Daut for the first time have met in the 90s during the war in Bosnia. They have met on the first front during the attack of the army of RS on the Bosnian village near Srebrenica. Daut was with soldiers and was shooting at Dane. Only after the war was it discovered that Dane survived, they met by accident. This is where their friendship begins. He has been at Al Jazeera Balkans since Emir Zumbul Kapetanović was born in 1981 in Sarajevo, where he completed Acting at the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts. He has acted in numerous theater plays, short films and TV shows. In 2008, he founded the production company Alhemia Film and started directing documentary and experimental films. She kept doing photography but at the same time writing screenplays, both for short and feature films. At the age of 19, she moved from Struga to Skopje and she enrolled at Faculty of Dramatic Arts at the department of Film and TV directing. Her short student projects were two short documentaries (Daddy cool, Bye, bye America) and three short fiction films (Chicken soup, Mama, The old man s luck). In 2015 she received a grant from the Macedonian Film Agency for her next short movie entitled The Award, which was finished in June this year. During her studies in Skopje she worked as an assistant director and a script supervisor in many projects amongst which short films, commercials, TV series and feature length films. Melis Birder shot her first independent documentary Tenth Planet A Single Life in Baghad in 2004 in Iraq. The film was screened at New York s Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Her Sundance Documentary Fund supported film Visitors was screened in many festivals but most importantly in various prisons in NY. Dušan Kasalica je rođen u Nikšiću u Crnoj Gori. Završio je režiju na Fakultetu dramskih umetnosti na Cetinju, gde trenutno radi na odseku za Filmsku i TV režiju. Učetvovao je na Locarno Filmmakers Academy i Berlinale Talents. Njegov kratki film Biserna obala je osvojio nagradu Srce Sarajeva za najbolji kratkometražni film na 21. Sarajevskom filmskom festivalu i bio je prikazan na drugim prestižnim festivalima širom sveta. Trenutno radi na nekoliko projekata, kao reditelj i producent, a njegov novi kratkometražni film SOA je osvojio Posebno priznanje žirija na 23. Sarajevskom filmskom festivalu. Dušan Kasalica was born in Nikšić, Montenegro. He graduated the film directing from the Faculty of Drama Arts in Cetinje, Montenegro, where he now works in the Department of Film and Television directing. He participated in Locarno Filmmakers Academy and Berlinale Talents. His short film A Matter Of Will won the Heart of Sarajevo award for the best short film of the 21st Sarajevo Film Festival and was screened in other prestigious festivals around the world. Upon arrival back in Croatia, Jakov is filming his brother Ivan, his life with schizophrenia diagnose and his treatments in psychiatric clinics in Split, Rab and Ugljan. Most of the video footage was taken secretly in order to expose the inhumanity and brutality of treatment to which the residents of these institutions are subjected to and the real impact that medicament has on their mental and physical well-being. Jakov Labrović (1983.) has a master's degree in Sculpture Arts and he is artistic leader of performing arts collective ROOM 100 which is producing and distributing risky contemporary circus performances that combines circus skills with sculpture arts, electronic music, break and butoh dance. He is artistic director and performer of C8H11NO2 performance who has been awarded as Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe 2010 laureate (highest score by jury members in project's history) and performed at various festivals in USA, France, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Lithuania, Croatia... Taken in by her uncle Esteve and aunt Marga, Frida discovers her new environment, an old stone farmhouse in a mountainous area close to a dense forest. Her new "parents" prove friendly. Another good point is that they have a three-year old daughter named Anna who can become a playmate. For another child less disturbed than miserable uprooted Frida, this would be the most idyllic of stays, in other words a permanent vacation. But Frida is disturbed and if there are undeniably good times at her new "home", there is also the unexpressed pain which makes her both feel sad and behave badly. Carla Simón was born in a small Catalan village in Being part of an extensive family that is a bottomless pit of stories, she chose film to portray the complexity of the human condition and family relationships in particular. She graduated in Audiovisual Communication in Barcelona after an exchange year at the University of California. Alen Drljevic Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Germany, Croatia, 2017, 98 Friday, November 3 rd Ako je telo povređeno nožem, metkom, tupim predmetom, bilo čime, uostalom, što otvara rane, onda se ono, telo, ukoliko preživi, ne leči apstraktnim sredstvima: bajanjem, recimo, ili pričanjem poučnih priča. Telo se leči konkretnim sredstvima. Rana se najpre obradi, dezinfikuje, najzad zašije. Ponekad su postupci izlečenja krvaviji i bolniji od samih povreda, ponekad umeju da ubiju ranjenog čoveka, ali pokušati se mora. Alternativa je smrt. Šta je, međutim, s dušom? Šta je s tim apstraktnim ljudskim svojstvom do kojeg se toliko visoko drži, a da ni danas nismo uspeli da pronađemo preterano efikasna sredstva za lečenje povređene duše. Psihološke metode su svojevrsni homeopatski postupci: slično se leči sličnim, na apstrakciju se ide apstrakcijom. Pa šta bude. A uglavnom biva loše. Muškarci ne plaču Alena Drljevića nudi brutalniji postupak: duša se leči konkretnim sredstvima. U izdvojenom hotelu na planini koja bi mogla biti bilo gde na prostoru bivše Jugoslavije, grupa ratnih veterana i građana, koja vuče duboke traume iz jugoslovenskih ratova, dobrovoljno se podvrgava savremenom psihološkom postupku koji bi trebalo da njihove traume olakša. Grupu sačinjavaju ljudi koji govore istim jezikom Bošnjaci, Srbi i Hrvati ali su u ratu bili na suprotstavljenim stranama. Osim što se prisećaju događaja iz rata sada se, na licu mesta, suočavaju sa svojim arhineprijateljima. Kako govore o užasima koje su doživeli, tako raste i napetost u njihovom sadašnjem odnosu. U jednom će trenutku, suočen sa bezizlaznom situacijom, poslovično suzdržani psihoterapeut da urlikne: Samo za nasilje znate! Ali nasilje je uvek konkretno. Suočeni s nasiljem, sa krivicom, sa očajem, suočeni sa samima sobom, ali i ovde je o tome reč sa drugim ljudima, pokidane, umrtvljene duše počinju da se kreću. Noćni razgovori ispituju psihološke i političke mehanizme koji konkretno ranjavaju duše i iste takve mehanizme koji konkretno, isto onako konkretno kako nož zaseca meso, zašivaju rane na dušama. If a body is injured by a knife, a bullet, a blunt object, or whatever that inflicts wounds, then the body, if it survives, cannot be treated by abstract means: by sorcery, for instance, or by telling pretty stories that are common knowledge. The body must be treated by very concrete means. The wound has first to be cleaned, disinfected, and finally sewed. Sometimes the healing processes are even more bloody and painful than injuries themselves, sometimes they can even kill a wounded man, but it must be attempted. The alternative is death. But what about the soul? What about this abstract human quality which is esteemed so highly, but even to this day have we been able to find sufficiently effective means of treating an injured soul. Psychological methods are some sort of homeopathic procedures: similar phenomena are treated similarly, abstraction is treated by abstraction. And then whatever the outcome may be. And the outcome is mostly bad. Men Don t Cry by Alen Drljevic offers a more brutal procedure: the soul is treated by concrete means. In an isolated hotel on a mountain that could be anywhere on the territory of former Yugoslavia, a group of war veterans and citizens who are suffering from severe trauma caused by Yugoslav wars voluntarily undergo a modern psychological procedure which is supposed to make their trauma easier. The group is made up of people who speak the same language - Bosnians, Serbs and Croatians - but who belonged to the different conflicting parties in the war. In addition to recalling the events of the war, they are now in a situation to directly face their archenemies. As they speak of the horrors they have experienced, the tension in their current relationships grows. At one point, having found himself in a dead-end, the generally restrained psychologist starts screaming: "You know nothing but violence!" But violence is always concrete. Faced with violence, with guilt, with despair, they are confronted with themselves, but - and that is what this is all about - with other people, broken, benumbed souls begin to move. Robert Zuber Croatia, 2017, 78 Saturday, November 4 th Lična tragedija porodice Šitum pretvorila se u prvorazredni događaj od javnog značaja. Najpre je teška bolest devojčice mobilisala građane Hrvatske na najbolji mogući način, da bi odmah, još dok se mala Nora Šitum borila za život, miris (velikog) novca privukao je grabljivce, kao što krv foke privlači ajkule. Kada bismo danas, godine, živeli u prirodnom stanju u kome nema institucija, organizovanog zajedničkog života, dakle ni države (a ni medija), niti postoji pojam pravde, postupanje grabljivaca ne bi se moglo osuđivati. U prirodnom stanju svako se bori samo za sebe, a na samom početku otpadaju slabi, nemoćni i bolesni. No, za državu članicu Evropske unije sve se može reći samo ne da u njoj vlada prirodno stanje. Ili, ipak, može? Poveliki novac koji su građani Hrvatske, u činu solidarnosti, sakupili kao pomoć devojčici oboleloj od teške bolesti, odjednom se našao u rukama vrlo sumnjive organizacije vrlo sumnjivih ciljeva i krajnje sumnjivih metoda baratanja tim novcem. Osim što će se deo javnosti okrenuti protiv postradale porodice, sama se država nije našla pozvanom da interveniše, te su se svi pokušaji porodice da, kroz institucije, dođe do novca namenjenog lečenju devojčice, ili makar da se taj novac preusmeri u svrhe u koje je uplaćen dakle pomoći građanima koji ne mogu da plate troškove lečenja ostali uzaludni. Film o borbi građana za univerzalne vrednosti, borbi u kojoj država ne čini ništa, ili ne čini dovoljno, da pomogne svojim građanima, pokreće pitanja kojima obiluju ne samo neuređene ili nedovršene države (poput postjugoslovenskih država), već i pitanja same države. Čak i kada je dobro čudovište, Levijatan koji pomaže postradalim pomorcima, država je i dalje čudovište. Najčudovišnije oblike države videli smo, u liku nacizma i komunizma, u 20 veku: te države su ubijale i sopstvene građane. Ali država se pokazuje kao čudovišna i kada ne čini ništa zarad građana. Noćni razgovori pokreću upravo pitanje države koja se ne ponaša kao servis građana što je odlika demokratskog poretka već se postavlja ili kao tutor (u težem obliku), ili, zagledana u sebe samu, kao nezainteresovana ili nespremna da se okrene onima zbog kojih postoji: svojih građana. The personal tragedy of the Situm family has turned to be a first-class event of public significance. At first, the girl's severe illness mobilized the citizens of Croatia in the best possible way, but then, while little Nora Situm was still fighting for her life, the smell of (big) money attracted predators, just as a seal's blood attracts sharks. Had we today, in 2017, lived in "natural conditions" in which there were no institutions, organized cohabitation, in other words, if neither the state (and the media), nor the notion of justice existed, the actions of predators could not be condemned. In natural conditions each and every one is struggling solely for oneself, so at the very beginning the weak, the powerless and the sick are left to shift for themselves. But for a Member State of the European Union, anything can be said but not that it is ruled by laws of nature. Or, perhaps, this is not true, after all? The huge sum of money that the citizens of Croatia, in their act of solidarity, had collected to help the girl who suffers from a serious illness, suddenly ended up in the hands of a very dubious organization with very dubious goals and extremely dubious methods of handling that money. Not only did a part of the public turn against the girl s family, but the state itself did not consider it its duty to intervene, so all family attempts to get the money for the treatment of the girl through institutions, or at least to have the donated money transferred to be used for its original purpose - to help citizens who cannot pay the costs of medical treatment remained futile. A film about the struggle of citizens for universal values, a struggle in which the state does nothing, or does not do enough to help its citizens, raises the issues which are numerous not only in incomplete states and those not properly ruled by law (such as post-yugoslav countries), but also the issues of the state itself. Even when it's a good monster, the "Leviathan" that helps the poisoned seafarers, the state is still a monster. We have seen the most monstrous forms of the state in Nazism and Communism in the 20th century: these countries also killed their own citizens. But the state also appears to be monstrous when it does nothing for its citizens. Late Night Conversations raise the very question of a state that does not behave as a service of its citizens which is the quality of a democratic state but takes the stand either of a tutor (in its strictest sense), or, self-centred and self-sufficient, is indifferent or unwilling to turn to those for whom it exists: its citizens Filmski festival Slobodna zona 129

Alexander Kleider Germany, 2017, 91 Sunday, November 5 th Iako je kompromis jedan od ključnih pojmova slobodnog, građanskog života, upravo građanski život ne sme, u nekoliko oblasti, da ispod granice kompromisa. Obrazovanje je jedna od njih. Ali baš na tom mestu bez kompromisa kao otrovne gljivice izrastaju kompromisi koji postaju veći kompromisi, da bi potom počeli da proždiru i ono na čemu i sami počivaju, u ovom slučaju obrazovanje. Ogroman broj učenika u Nemačkoj prekida svoje školovanje iz različtijih razloga, a jedan od vodećih je njihova neprilagođenost školskim pravilima. Oni su neka vrsta pobunjenika bez raloga protiv sistema koji ne razumeju. Jedna berlinska škola, međutim, upravo takvim učenicima, pruža drugu šansu. Ali ako su se učenici pobunili protiv sistema, ako su sada izvan sistema, onda ni škola ne može da pripada sistemu, što znači da nema podršku sistema, a što, najkonkretnije, znači da se za novac snalaze sami (pri čemu srednje škole nisu čuvene po tome što zarađuju novac). Profesori su, već po pretpostavci, malo drugačiji od običnih profesora, njihove su metode takođe malo drugačije, a da su im plate takođe drugačije ne treba ni govoriti. Kako nemaju para ni za tetkice koje bi čistile školu, učionice, hodnike i toalete čiste sami učenici i profesori. U školi ne postoji hijerarhija, premda postoji struktura. Na redovnim skupštinama učenici imaju pravo glasa. Kako će ga iskoristi i u koje svrhe drugo je pitanje. Noćni razgovori pokreću pitanje da li takve škole, bile one u sistemu ili izvan njega, omogućavaju adekvatno obrazovanje? I šta je, uopšte, adekvatno obrazovanje? Današnji svet nije naklonjen produbljenom obrazovanju, ali ako je tako kakva je budućnost obrazovanja? I koje vrste obrazovanja? Da li, danas, uprkos lepim rečima i slavnoj prošlosti, vredi ulagati u obrazovanje? Odgovor je, nesumnjivo da, ali ako je odgovor u toj meri neupitan, kako je moguće da se sama ideja obrazovanja ovako brzo i efikasno urušava? Although compromise is one of the key concepts of free, civic life, civic life itself must not, in several areas, go below the limits of compromise. Education is one of them. But exactly in that area which is without compromise, like poisonous fungi, compromises grow that become even greater compromises, and then they begin to devour that which they themselves are based upon, in this case - education. An enormous number of students in Germany interrupt their education for a variety of reasons, one of the leading ones being their inability to adapt to school rules. They are some kind of "rebels without cause" against the system they do not understand. A school in Berlin, however, offers such students another chance. But if pupils rebelled against the system, if they are now outside the system, then the school cannot belong to the system either, which means that there is no system support, which, most definitely, means that they have to provide money on their own (and secondary schools are not famous for making money). The professors are, presumably, slightly different from ordinary professors, their methods are also slightly different, and that their salaries are also different need not be even mentioned. Since they have no money for "cleaning ladies" who would clean the school, classrooms, corridors and toilets, students and professors clean them themselves. There is no hierarchy in the school, although it has structure. At regular assemblies students have the right to vote. How they will use it and to what purpose is a completely different question. Late Night Conversations raise the question of whether such schools, whether in the system or outside it, provide adequate education? And what is indeed adequate education? Present-day world is not in favor of profound education, but if this is true, what is the future of education? And what type of education? And despite fancy words and its glorious past, is it worthwhile to invest in education? The answer is, undoubtedly - yes, but if the answer is to that extent unquestionable, how is it possible that the very idea of education is so quickly and so effectively crumbling down? Ovogodišnje izdanje uređuje i vodi rediteljka Jelena Gavrilović, koja će tokom 5 festivalskih dana razgovarati sa ekipom filma Dan Oslobođenja, gostom selektorom Teofilom Pančićem, selektorima nove regionalne selekcije i svim prisutnim gostima festivala.
