3 Charter Bell ExpressVu (Canada) TV WGBH.1 84 WGBH HD Cox RCN FiOS No single figure shaped American culture in the 0th century more than Walt Disney. In 1966, the year he died, 40 million people saw a Disney movie, 100 million tuned in a Disney television program, 80 million bought Disney merchandise, and close to seven million visited Disneyland. This month, WGBH s award-winning history series American Experience explores the life and legacy of one of America s most enduring and influential storytellers in a groundbreaking two-part, four-hour biography (American Experience s Walt Disney, page 14). No matter how old you are, you ve encountered something Walt Disney created, says American Experience executive producer Mark Samels. He was a creative and entrepreneurial force a master filmmaker who harnessed the power of technology and storytelling. That kind of pervasive influence is not only fascinating, it says a lot about America, as you ll see in our film. But telling the story of Walt Disney, in all his complexity, took some doing. The challenge with Disney is that he s not only a historical figure, he s also a brand. And the corporation that bears his name is understandably protective, says Mark, who began conversations with the company nearly three years ago. In the end, they agreed to provide us with unprecedented access to their archives. I told them they would have absolutely no editorial control, that they would see the film when America saw it, and that they needed to trust that American Experience would do the kind of job we ve done with presidents, generals, and other leaders of industry. Our reputation our trustworthiness were key factors in their saying yes. That trustworthiness defines not only American Experience, but all our WGBH productions. From Nova to Frontline, Antiques Roadshow to The, Greater Boston to Innovation Hub our subjects and our audiences know they can count on WGBH to deliver fresh, scrupulously researched, compelling takes on the stories that matter. 28 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR New Voice in the Afternoon The new voice you re hearing on 89.7 s All Things Considered belongs to Barbara Howard, a public radio veteran who joined the WGBH News team this past August. Barbara is a Peabody Award-winning anchor, reporter, writer and producer, says Phil Redo, general manager of WGBH Radio. She has extensive local, national and international experience. She ll help us continue to integrate our unique blend of local reporting and storytelling in our coverage of the issues that matter throughout our region, as well as through our collaborations with WGBH national co-productions, including PRI s The and The Takeaway, and our partnership with The GroundTruth Project. While Barbara is new to WGBH, she s no stranger to Boston, having served as a substitute anchor, producer of long-form series, and editor for WBUR. Her four-part series entitled Liberation Remembered, which explored the liberation of Nazi death camps through interviews with American soldiers and survivors, won a Peabody Award. She previously worked at public radio station KQED in San Francisco; was the China reporter for Voice of America (she lived in Beijing for three years); and spent time in Germany reporting for NPR, the BBC, and Marketplace. She also served as an associate producer and audio producer for the acclaimed PBS series Eyes on The Prize I and II (Henry Hampton s epic civil rights series presented by WGBH). Barbara is a strong anchor and host as well as a talented editor, Redo concludes. We re excited to welcome her to our WGBH News team. Listen to All Things Considered weekdays, 4pm and 6:30pm on 89.7 and online at wgbhnews.org. Eric in the Evening Celebrate a Legend Host Eric Jackson pays tribute to the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane, one of the most influential musicians of the 0th century. Days before what would have been Coltrane s 89th birthday (on Sept. 3), Jackson will feature signature recordings of this transformative artist who shined as a leader of his own band, and playing alongside trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Sun, 9/0 at 9pm PRI s The Across India The s Across Women s Lives series continues with coverage from India examining the new opportunities and old prejudices women face there today. Host Marco Werman and a team of multimedia journalists document the lives of Indian women and men at a critical moment in India s growth as a democracy. 29 99.5 WCRB An End, a Beginning By Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Manager Before we let the lazy, hazy days of summer escape, WCRB will be ending the season with a Labor Day Weekend filled with great classical music with a twist. Amid all the classics you ll enjoy, we ll mix in a variety of lasts, the final pieces by your favorite composers: you ll hear Mozart s last symphony, Beethoven s last piano concerto, and Bach s last Brandenburg. It will make the last weekend of summer last just a little bit longer. Then, the following Sunday evening (Sept. 13), WCRB begins a three-week Festival of Monteverdi operas, all of which are live performances recorded earlier this year during the Boston Early Music Festival. These seminal performances of Orfeo (below), The Return of Ulysses to his Country (right), and The Coronation of Poppea are simply magical. Writing about these performances, The New York Times said, Boston Early Music Festival productions of opera represent pretty much the state of the historical-performance art. In addition to being historically on-point, these performances bring out the revolutionary beauty of Monteverdi s music and with it, the drama of these indelible stories. The singing is particularly beautiful as is the accompaniment of the unusual instruments that were so important to 17th-century music. These performances are not to be missed, and all you have to do is tune in WCRB s Sunday Night at the Opera, Sundays in September (Sept. 13, 0, and 7) at 8pm. If you have never heard these operas the first great operatic dramas ever composed then this trilogy is the perfect exposure to this repertoire. Then it s back to school time! The New England Conservatory has opened for another school year, and WCRB wants to welcome these exceptional music students back with a weeklong Symphony at 8 salute to the New England Conservatory Philharmonia and conductor Hugh Wolff. Each weeknight at 8pm beginning Monday Sept. 1, WCRB will offer a different symphony, as performed last year by the NEC Philharmonia. The wide-ranging repertoire will showcase the notable talent of these young musicians and will be an exciting and interesting listening experience. So, enjoy these last days of summer with the rich diversity of music we play on 99.5 WCRB Classical Radio Boston. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Celebrating 15 Years on Air By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial On Sept. 5, 000, the first word to cut through the static was Listen. WCAI Founder Jay Allison went on to say: Our purpose is community service. A sane and respectful place to talk. An ear on the rest of the world. A crossroads in our daily paths where we can meet and gather and even create change. That is perhaps a lofty goal for a mere radio signal, but a radio signal has the singular ability to proclaim all our separate identities, while it also spans our boundaries to bring us together. Fifteen years later, WCAI still strives to be the place you go for civil discourse and to hear the many voices that enrich our unique corner of the world. We re still a small staff, but we ve grown, adding local voices and features that explore different aspects of life in our beloved region. There s Robert Finch s poetic and observational A Cape Cod Notebook; Vernon Laux s The Bird Report; Elspeth Hay s Local Food Report; meteorologist Phil Burt s Talking Weather; and segments such as Fishing News, Weekend Outlook, and Creative Life. We started with one reporter and we now have five, providing in-depth coverage of local issues. We also regularly check in with journalists at local newspapers, including the Cape Cod Times and the New Bedford Standard Times. Fridays, we recap the week s top stories on The Point s News Roundup. When we began, the Internet was not ubiquitous; digital delivery had not eclipsed traditional media, Allison says. We continue to believe in the power of radio because it s place-specific. It emanates and radiates from the place we live and reflects our community. Amid the change WCAI recently strengthened our signal to expand our listening area much remains the same. We continue to collect the voices and stories of our neighbors in sonic IDS, the short vignettes we weave throughout our daily broadcast. Just as we hoped at the beginning, WCAI has become intertwined with our community, Allison says, telling the stories, reporting the news, working in the public interest. We re proud of the place we live and proud to serve it.
