Guys and Dolls Jr. Audition Materials Packet ***You must have already turned in your completed Audition Form!!!*** Bring this packet home and to your audition! Practice these materials with the songs available on the JTL website. (If you do not have access to the internet, please bring in a labeled blank CD or USB thumb drive to the Main Office for Ms. Bickel to give you your audition songs.) Included in this packet: Audition Information Audition Process Reminders Character Breakdown (other opportunities not listed available) Sheet music (for Ensemble, Male Lead and Female Lead) This sheet music goes with the audition tracks located on the JTL website. If you are auditioning for a lead, please also learn the ensemble song. A Scene from the Script This scene is provided to you in order to familiarize yourself in case we ask you to read from the script at auditions. It does NOT have to be memorized. We may ask you to read multiple parts. We may ask those trying out for leads to read additional scenes from the script not included. Make sure you practice with your materials and bring them to auditions! Break a leg! - Your Directors, Ms. Bickel and Mr. Booth
Audition Information If you are auditioning for ENSEMBLE, practice the following: 1. Guys and Dolls (The Happy Ending) (the first 20 seconds) If you are auditioning for a male LEAD, choose ONE of the following to practice: 2. Fugue for Tinhorns (the first 20 seconds) or 3. Luck Be a Lady (the first 50 seconds) or 4. Sit Down You re Rockin the Boat (the first 42 seconds) If you are auditioning for a female LEAD, choose ONE of the following to practice: 5. I ll Know (the first 20 seconds) 6. Adelaide s Lament (the first 50 seconds) There are no small parts, just small actors. - Konstantin Stanislavsky *Please note that a girl may choose to sing this song/ might play this part. *There are only a few lead roles, along with a handful of minor roles. Do NOT audition expecting to be cast as a lead role! Plus, if not cast as a lead you will have a chance to be a featured gangster or dancer! Exciting stuff! *Most roles have more speaking parts than singing- so make sure you look over the scene from the script! Make sure you read the character breakdown to get a better understanding of each role and practice the lines for each part. You might be asked to read as multiple characters. Audition Tips: Practice, Practice, Practice! Look over your material well in advance and practice the song and the scene each night. You will feel less nervous if you are prepared. Do not expect to be cast as a lead. You may have acted before, but the directors are casting students that they feel fit the role best. You still are awesome, and we may need your awesomeness to create an awesome ensemble. Drink water! Did you know the water you drink today won t hydrate your body (especially your vocal chords) until at least the next day? Hint hint: Start now. Get plenty of rest! You need rest to sing your best and to get your head in the game! Eye contact. You may not realize it, but if you are looking at the floor or your paper the whole time we may not be looking at you either. Don t stare us down, but make us WANT to watch you. You can even glance up at a spot on the wall above us if you are nervous. Familiarize yourself with the lines and songs so you are able to look up. Loosen up. If you don t look nervous, you look more confident. Feel free to move a bit. Volume. You may be wonderful, but if we can t hear you we might think you can t sing or act from the script comfortably. Project your voice to the back of the room! Diction. Spit out those words. Make every single word clear, down to every single letter. Be yourself- stand out. The directors will see TONS of auditions for multiple days. How can you make your short song and those few lines from the script pop? Personality! Do your best. If you know your song and are comfortable reading the lines from the script, then no worries- relax! You will be fine!
Audition Process REMINDERS (You ve seen this page before.) Done! Done! You have this packet; now get the music from online! 1. 4 Character breakdown Nathan Detroit Miss Adelaide Sky Masterson Sarah Brown Nathan Detroit is the heart and soul of Guys And Dolls JR. Nathan needn't be a great singer, but should be a very good actor with excellent comic timing and able to handle a sizable role. Nathan's big secret is that he wants to marry Adelaide; he just can't bring himself to admit it. Eb4 - B4 Miss Adelaide is the classic "intellectually-challenged floozy." She doesn't need to be a strong singer, but she must have a good sense of pitch. Adelaide needs to be funny and able to do a convincingly thick New York City dialect. A3 - D5 Sky Masterson is the quintessential, "smooth-as-velvet" Broadway gambler; he's slick and charming. In today's terms he would be called "a player." Sky should have a strong voice capable of owning the stage when delivering "Luck Be a Lady." He has a soft spot for Sarah Brown. Bb3 - D5 Sarah Brown is the "girl next door" with an adventurous side that's waiting to escape. She is gently authoritative, the mirror opposite of Sky. Sky is her weakness. Sarah is about substance as much as Sky is about style. She should be an excellent actress as well as singer, and must be able to show two distinct sides of herself. Bb3 - E5 Arvide Abernathy Arvide Abernathy is Sarah Brown's grandfather and the bass drum player in the Mission Band. This part can easily be cast as a girl, changing the character to Sarah's grandmother or female relative. Non-singing Nicely-Nicely Johnson Benny Southstreet Rusty Charlie Harry The Horse Big Jule Nicely - Nicely Johnson is walking, talking, Broadway comedy. This should be a performer who has fantastic comic timing and is naturally funny. He (or she) should have the chops to really deliver the showstopper, "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat." Bb3 - F5 Benny Southstreet and Rusty Charlie are the small-time gambler sidekicks of Nicely- Nicely Johnson. These are perfect roles for good actors who are naturally funny. They should be confident singers (they open the show with "The Fugue for Tin Horns") and have a handle on comic timing. Benny has speaking lines throughout. Range: Bb3 - E5 Benny Southstreet and Rusty Charlie are the small-time gambler sidekicks of Nicely- Nicely Johnson. They should be confident singers (they open the show with "The Fugue for Tin Horns") and have a handle on comic timing. Rusty Charlie's role is just singing. Range: Bb3 - D5 Harry the Horse and Big Jule are colorful additions to the crapshooters crew. They should be strong and humorous characters. They don't need to be strong singers. Lt. Brannigan General Cartwright Master of Ceremonies Ensemble Lt. Brannigan is the police officer that always plays the patsy and is outwitted by the Gamblers. Non-singing General Cartwright is the formidable leader of the Save-a-Soul Mission organization. Non-singing The Master of Ceremonies is the host at the Hot Box Club. He has one memorable line, so this is a great role for someone new to the stage. Non-singing Gamblers/ Hot Box Girls/ Mission Band/ Dancers/ Guys & Dolls (some have speaking lines)

Female Lead Audition Song Choice #2 (Adelaide s Lament CONTINUED)
Audition Scene (Page 1) From, Guys and Dolls Jr. SARAH Brothers and sisters, resist the Devil and he will flee from you. That is what the bible tells us. Hear me, you gamblers! with your dice, your cards, your horses. Just around the corner is our little Mission where you are always welcome to seek refuge from the jungle of sin. Join me, Brothers and Sisters, in resisting the Devil, and we can put the Devil Remember, friends, the Save-A-Soul Mission located at 409 West 49 th Street, open all day and all night Oh, never mind. (She exits) NICELY Poor Miss Sarah! I wonder why a refined doll like her is mixed up in the Mission dodge. Hey, Nathan! Did you find a place for the game? I was just over to the Biltmore Garage. Joey says he might take a chance and let me use the place, if I give him a thousand bucks. A thousand bucks? In cash. Nathan, can t you do something? NICELY NICELY What can I do? I m broke. I couldn t even buy Adelaide a present today, and you know what today is? It is mine and Adelaide s anniversary. NICELY Say, Nathan, you know who else is looking for action? Sky Masterson! Sky Masterson! There is the highest player of them all! NICELY Maybe you can borrow the thousand from Sky. Not Sky. With him that kind of money ain t lending money. It s betting money. So why don t I bet him? Why don t I bet him a thousand on something? (She enters) Hello, Nathan dear. Adelaide! Pidgeon! ADELAIDE ADELAIDE (Calling to her friends offstage) You go ahead, girls. Order me a tuna fish on rye and a chocolate sundae with tomato ketchup and mayonnaise. (To Nathan) We gotta get back to the Hot Box. You still rehearsing?
Audition Scene (Continued, Page 2) From, Guys and Dolls Jr. ADELAIDE Yeah. That slave driver Charlie he s been working us all day. Finally I says, Look, Charlie, I m starving! I gotta get outta here and get something to eat. And he says, You don t want to eat. You just want to sneak out and meet that cheap bum, Nathan Detroit! So what did you say to him? ADELAIDE I told him. I says, I ll meet whoever I want! Happy Anniversary! (Hands him a box) A present? For me? I hope you like it. A belt! Read the card! ADELAIDE ADELAIDE Sugar is sweet, and so is jelly, so put this belt around your belly. That s so sweet. Look, honey about your present. I didn t get one. I m sorry. ADELAIDE No, I kinda like it when you forget to give me presents. It makes me feel like we re married. Don t worry, honey one of these days I ll be in the money, and you ll have more mink than a mink. ADELAIDE Nathan darling. I can do without anything just so long as you don t start running the crap game again. The crap game! What an absurd thought! (Nicely and Adelaide exit) Nathan! You old promoter, you! How are you, Sky? Going to be in town long? Flying to Havana tomorrow. Havana! Yes, there s lots of action down there. Want to come with me?
Audition Scene (Continued, Page 3) From, Guys and Dolls Jr. No, I got a lot of things to (Nicely enters) NICELY We took Adelaide to the drugstore, and she says for you to be sure to pick her up after the show at the Hot Box and don t be late. Yes dear. I mean yes Yes, dear. That is husband talk if I ever heard it. Nathan, you are trapped. In Adelaide you have the kind of girl that is most difficult to unload. I don t want to unload her. I love Adelaide. And a guy without a doll well, a doll is a necessity. Nathan, I am not putting the rap on dolls. I just say, figuring weight for age, all dolls are the same. Oh, yeah? Yeah! Then how come you ain t got a doll? How come you re going to Havana alone without one? I like to travel light, but if I wish to take a doll to Havana there is a large assortment available. Not real high class dolls! Any doll! You name her! Any doll? And I name her? Will you bet on that? Will you bet a thousand dollars that if I name a doll you will take her to Havana tomorrow? You got a bet!
