2 Course Description and Class Procedures Theatre 1 Theatre courses are performance-centered and each student is expected to participate. Theatre 1 is a survey course in which you will be introduced to theatre activities, the ensemble nature of theatre, technical applications and problem solving, improvisation, dramatic structure, the acting process and live performance. Students are required to attend the Jaguar Theatre Productions. Students are encouraged but not required to compete in theatre tournaments. Students are required to have a threeringed binder or spiral dedicated to theatre. Students may leave their binder or spiral in the lockers in the Theatre Room. Students will receive grades for in class performances, rehearsals, quizzes, tests, character analysis, and text analysis. Grade Breakdown is as follows: Major Grades 50%, Minor Grades 35%, and Daily Grades 15%. In case of absence due to illness, students are allotted two days for every day of absence. Late work will be accepted, however, a 10-point deduction is given for each day past the due date. Students can check for daily objectives, homework, performance updates, etc on the class Edmodo page. Parents are welcome to log on to Edmodo as well. Theatre 3 is an advanced theatre course in which you will be continue the exploration of theatre activities, the ensemble nature of theatre, technical applications and problem solving, improvisation, dramatic structure, the acting process and live performance. Additionally, Theatre 3 students will be required to participate in the one act play festival. Rehearsals for this play will take place in class. However, the performance will be held on a weekend in the spring. Students in Theatre 3 are strongly encouraged to participate in the after school productions. Students who choose not to participate are required to attend the Jaguar Theatre Productions. Students are encouraged but not required to compete in theatre tournaments. Students are required to have a three-ringed binder or spiral dedicated to theatre. Students may leave their binder or spiral in the lockers in the Theatre Room. Don t Miss Your Cue- don t be late to class 3. The Show Must Go On- remember to always give 100% in class 4. No gum chewing allowed in class

The first production will be a straight play (non musical). Auditions will be held November 13 th. Rehearsals will begin November 17 th. Students will need to complete an audition packet and bring that with them to their audition. Crew Interviews will be held November 17 November 21 during advisory time. There will be a $25 show fee which includes a show t-shirt and headshot. After school rehearsals will be Monday-Thursday 2:40-4:15. The second production will be our all school musical. Auditions will be held January Rehearsals will begin in February. Students will need to complete an audition packet and bring that with them to their audition. Talent show auditions will be January 9 th. Audition packets will be available in December. Tournaments: There will be three theatre tournaments this year. Tournaments are held on Saturdays. Each tournament will have different instructions regarding departure and pick up. Students are required to dress professionally and provide their own materials. Tournament costs average $30 per tournament. Students are required to purchase a

5 Jaguar Theatre Company Shirt in order to wear to the awards ceremony. Students that would like to participate in tournaments are encouraged but not required to purchase a Jaguar Theatre Company Duffle and competition jacket. Students need to provide a black binder for competition.

6 Jaguar Theatre Parents The Jaguar Theatre Parents are any parent who wishes to support the activities of the Jaguar Theatre Company by volunteering their time. These parents work to reach program goals set by the director. Involved parents are more informed, develop a better understanding of the philosophy of the program and have a better appreciation of the benefits their child receives by being a part of the Jaguar Theatre Company. Involved parents receive information at the meetings in which directly supports their students. Meetings are called based on the needs of the department as decided by the director. ELIGIBILITY Senate Bill 1 mandates that students who participate in extra-curricular activities such as School Performances, Showcases, Tournaments, and field trips must receive a grade of no less than 70 in each of their classes. A student will be suspended from participation in all extra-curricular activities sponsored or sanctioned by the school district for a minimum of 6 calendar weeks after a grade-reporting period if any grade is lower than a 70 in any class. Students who were eligible before the failing grade report will not lose eligibility until 7 calendar days after the end of the grading period. Ineligible students must wait 7 calendar days after the end of the three week evaluation period and/or the grading period to regain eligibility, whichever comes first. All Theatre activities outside of the normal academic day are considered extensions of the classroom or curricular activities. However, all theatre public performances, all Tournaments and their related activities, and any field trips are considered extracurricular and fall under the Eligibility mandate. STUDENTS MUST PASS ALL CLASSES WITH A 70 OR ABOVE! CONDUCT Jaguar Theatre Company Students have a high profile on campus and in the community. It is imperative that the conduct and appearance of all theatre students be above reproach. Theatre students will have the opportunity to participate in many exciting events on stage and behind the scenes. As representatives of West Memorial Junior High and the Jaguar Theatre Company, our students must reflect an image of positive leadership, character, responsibility, and good sportsmanship. Any student who

7 receives a N or U in conduct in any class will not be allowed to participate in theatre extra-curricular activities. Any student assigned to in school suspension the day before or on the day of a contest or field trip will not be allowed to participate in that activity. In accordance with KISD policy, any student suspended from school for any reason will not be permitted to participate in any theatre activities during the period of suspension. Any student, who walks out of a rehearsal or quits during a rehearsal process for a performance without just cause defined by the director, may not be allowed to participate in another theatre performance for the year. Any student who is not directly connected to the production through the audition, casting and technical assignment process shall not be allowed in the rehearsal process or backstage. Any student who does not use theatre safety and etiquette guidelines established by the Theatre Department will not be allowed to participate in any theatre activity for the remainder of the year. Self-discipline is critical to the success of the Jaguar Theatre Company. Extra Curricular Theatre Rules No gum! No food or drink allowed in any theatre space. Water is allowed. Practice theatre safety and etiquette in all theatre spaces at all times. There are no exceptions. Your safety and your health could depend on it. Any irresponsible or unauthorized use of tools, equipment, materials in the theatre space is considered vandalism and will be dealt with accordingly. Thoroughly clean all work areas and store all tools before beginning another task or leaving the theatre areas. Flip flops are not allowed in the theatre spaces. Hard soled shoes are preferred while working in the theatre. Shoes shall be worn in the theatre at all times. Opened toed shoes are not allowed in any shop or technical work area. Respect each other, all adults, and your director. Treat others as you wish to be treated. Always do the right thing!
