You know you haven t petted him yet Victor No music, but dog s shallow breaths along the whole way. Dad reaches out to pet Victor in a very cautious way, when Sparky licks him, he retracts his hands and tries to rub off the saliva. Low lighting lit by house lamps, creates a lot of shadows.

2 When the Frankensteins go to work/school, leaving Sparky Mid shot, eye level of the Frankensteins around the table Low lit lighting all blinds closed (little light seeping through) Artificial lighting from ONE lamp You should keep all the blinds closed Mrs Frankenstein Sparky on table eating from bowl Eye level shot of Victor [but Mr Frankenstein s head is out of the image] when walking out of the door No lighting in home, only ambient lighting when door is opened [creates lots of shadows] Suspenseful music sounds magical [with chimes] only when door opens (when it closes, music stops). Birds chirps in background - shows ordinary life outside the home Lighting contrast of inside the home to outside [very dark to very bright] Continuous cuts of Mr Frankenstein with Victor trying to act normal, then cut to the neighbours being nosy but TRYING to be inconspicuous and back at Mr Frankenstein. When Sparky runs away and the neighbours chase them down The golf course Sparky runs into is very magical looking but secluded and horror-like [mid 19 th century horror film style] Dramatic lines [over-exaggerated] It attacked my daughter the man It tried to eat my... The chubby woman with glasses At night time, the neighbours hold torches dim lighting. Crane shot of Sparky running through the hole in the fence and onto the hill of the golf course. He pauses, and when he sees Victor, he runs into the hole of the windmill Crane shot of Vincent running through the hole and onto the hill. He pauses, but when he sees his parents, he runs into the door of the windmill. 3 EDWARD SCISSORHANDS First 5 minutes Opening Scene MUSIC creates a fantasy feeling [ not so spooky ] - music fades out when reaching the bedroom, showing that we shouldn t be frightened because its fictional LIGHTING chiaroscuro sinister, threatening, dark - low key lighting makes it feel dark and spooky [ intro ] - low key lighting in the room creates a warm feeling, shows that this film is not typical COLOURS monochromatic lighting shows an ominous, threatening, horror feeling - warm colours in bedroom makes it look inviting MOTIFS dark house on a hill [ typical horror story ] it has gothic architecture + manipulates conventions CAMERA/SHOT ANGLES low angle of a house on a hill and dark + snowy - high angle shot of the town from the castle, where Edward begins & ends suggests that Edward is above the town because his morals are better MISE EN SCENE lights + music + colours creates a magical mood/horror - different shapes and figures of the robots are not typical DIALOGUE a long time ago... creates a fantasy feel Town and Mansion Peg s Drive Up Edward s House MUSIC organ non-diegetic music on the street to non-diegetic spooky music on the castle - music changes to a angelic mood when entering Ed s garden LIGHITNG back lit lighting on castle to create silhouette - light coming in from windows from castle shows curiosity COLOURS bright colourful houses [ unnatural ] shows that its unconventional - Edward would be surrounded in colours when he s dressed in black, this focuses on isolation of the outsifer - colourful streets provide safety but castle is dark and black and is silhouetted by the backlit lighting. - sky is not as bright on the castle as it was on the streets [ washed out ] MOTIFS German Expressionism of seeing castle through mirror shows that the castle is a reflection of society and how they are dark and evil underneath the good exterior shows that the castle is not a part of society - the garden in Ed s castle questions stereotypes CAMERA SHOTS/ANGLES close up pan of the sleeping quarters, showing characterisation through the posters that shows that Ed wants to be loved. 4 MISE EN SCENE uniformity of the houses in terms of shapes, sizes and layout, using German Expressionism - askew lines foreshadows conflict of Ed getting lost in society when he s forced into the situation - juxtaposition of Ed s darkness and the society s colourfulness - car, family home, children riding in the back ground confirm our expectations of suburbia being safe+inviting DIALOGUE Don t go softly spoken by Ed. He looks scary with pale skin, scissors as hands, messy hair and black clothes His aural image plays with the visual image from the shadows until he shows himself in the light [ aural contrasts visual ] - Ed shies away from Peg s hand showing his lack of human interaction [ challenging stereotypes ] The BBQ Sequence COLOURS exaggerated colours CAMERA SHOTS/ANGLES midshot of the men circling Ed shows intimidation challenges stereotypes that society is good and the outsider is bad, but it is not shown that way society treats others badly but even if they try to take them in, they might still exclude them DIALOGUE The guys and I want to invite you to our card game Friday night... only thing is, you can t cut! from Joyce s husband initial novelty value to object of ridicule. Now you ve don t it yells Jim as he intruded upon the moment of beauty which causes Ed to cut Kim s hand Jim is representative of society s evil and the inability to appreciate the outsider s qualities
