Les Chemins du français This half-day program of interactive French workshops will serve as a promenade through the French-speaking world, appealing to all five senses along the way. Discover some of the paths accessible to those who speak French! Sessions will be conducted entirely in French. Students of French at all levels are permitted to attend, but please be advised that the program aims to provide an immersion experience for students who have studied French for at least two or more years. 9:00 AM - 9:20 AM Welcoming remarks. 9:30 AM - 10:20 AM 10:30 AM - 11:20 AM Presentations (two identical sessions) 11:20 AM - 12:10 PM Lunch 12:15 PM - 1:30 PM Film festival awards You will attend two of the following presentations, one in each session. Le Chemin du chocolat Dr. Elizabeth Emery Mr. Laurent Kadji Before it reaches American stores much of the world s chocolate makes its way through the French-speaking world. In this presentation we will visit Côte d Ivoire, the world s largest producer of cocoa beans, as well as Belgium Switzerl, the largest consumers of chocolate. Tracing the path of chocolate from seed to luxury product will allow us to discuss geography, economics, the politics of free trade, followed (bien sûr!) by a chocolate tasting. Glimpses into the Region of the South-West of France Professors Harriet Saxon Joséphine Seignat Discover the secrets of the fascinating region of southwestern France its history, prehistoric caves art, its culture gastronomy! Travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the majestic beauty of the Pyrénées mountains. Improving Cultural French Language Skills through Francophone Maghrebian Texts Dr. Rabia Redouane This workshop will introduce students to Francophone North African women writers, especially those from second third generations known as "beur writers," to their major work. Excerpts from these literary texts will be presented students will be guided to read interpret them. Students will also participate in various communicative activities that enhance reading writing skills, deepen their understing of cultural social issues.

A good example of this kind of project is the 2006 film Paris, je t aime, in which twenty directors each made a five-minute film set in a different arrondissement of Paris. [ The setting must be identified early in the film, either in opening credits, through use of an image (i.e. city sign or map), or by the characters themselves. The audience must see images of the country or city during the film. This may be conveyed through photographs, drawings, or other media, but third-party images should be acknowledged in the credits (we don t expect you to travel for this project!). No film may be more than five minutes long, including credits (shorter is fine). The film must be appropriate for all audiences. The film must acknowledge the participating school in opening or closing credits. Each school may submit only one entry per class. Content must be original: authored performed by the students of the participating school. Images borrowed from web sites, magazines, or other sources must be acknowledged in the final credits. The film must be submitted as a.mov or.mp4 file no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, January 30. The file title should be expressed as: teachername.school.classname. Submissions should be accompanied by the "Film Submission Form" or by a cover letter providing the information requested there. By entering the contest, students teachers agree to the official rules accept the judges decision. Judges The judges will be made up from a panel of French-speaking Montclair State University faculty, students, alumni. Judging Criteria Does the film address the French Day theme (i.e. "Les Chemins du français"? Does the audience learn about a French-speaking country? Does the film present a situation or problem that characters resolve by speaking French? Creativity. Have the authors created a unique scenario? Are the story, script, characters interesting engaging? Is the film memorable? Will the viewer be inspired to share the film with others? Quality of the French. Do characters speak clearly comprehensibly in grammatically-correct French? Aesthetic quality of the film. Film should have good sound quality clear, steady pictures.
