3 world premieres NEW WORK BY JORMA ELO-CHUCK CLOSE-PHILIP GLASS Choreography by JORMA ELO Music by PHILIP GLASS Jorma Elo Chuck Close s many portraits of Philip Glass have become iconic images of the composer. Culminating their over forty-year friendship, Philip Glass, in turn, paid tribute to their remarkable bond in the form of a musical portrait of Chuck Close. Composed for solo piano, the composition is in two parts, the first a reflection of Mr. Close in the 1960 s, the second a portrait of the ure artist. Now, ABT celebrates two of the most important artists of our time with a World Premiere ballet, inspired by Glass A Musical Portrait of Chuck Close, and choreographed by one of today s most thrilling choreographers, Jorma Elo. This production is made possible by the generous support of Leading Underwriters Barbara Hemmerle Gollust, Lewis S. Ranieri, and Leila and Mickey Straus, with additional funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. NEW WORK BY BENJAMIN MILLEPIED Choreography by BENJAMIN MILLEPIED Music by NICO MUHLY Benjamin Millepied Bold and original choreography is set to an ABT-commissioned score as one of the bright talents in the dance world, Benjamin Millepied, creates a World Premiere work inspired by the refreshingly fertile musical mind of Nico Muhly. Mentored by Jerome Robbins, Benjamin Millepied has been praised for his daring ability to break the mold, resulting in ballets that are unique, engaging, and very special indeed. This production is made possible by the generous support of Cheryl Bergenfield Katz. Nico Muhly s original score has been generously underwritten through a gift from Michele and Stn Pesner. 4 premieres BALLO DELLA REGINA Choreography by GEORGE BALANCHINE Music by GIUSEPPE VERDI Underpinning the froth and frolics of this joyous ballet is one of the most technically fiendish ballerina roles in the Balanchine canon, demanding a capacity for dizzying turns and lightning-speed reflexes. Set in an underwater grotto to infectiously cheerful music from Verdi s opera Don Carlos, Balanchine s dance poem is a showcase for the virtuosic bravura of ABT s world-class ballerinas. BAKER S DOZEN Choreography by TWYLA THARP Music by WILLIE THE LION SMITH Set to the 1920s jazz music of master stride pianist Willie The Lion Smith, this satiny smooth dance conjures a world where afternoon social dancing happens with utter ease. Choreographed for twelve dancers, Tharp s work features unexpected movement, intricate dance patterns, humor and sheer exhilarating fun. From the tender Strangers In The Night to the tough and contentious That s Life, Tharp s ballroom pas de deux exudes the slink and glamour of Sinatra s moody, bittersweet voice. FALL RIVER LEGEND CLEAR Choreography by AGNES DE MILLE Music by MORTON GOULD Choreography by STANTON WELCH Music by JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH One of the great architects of American ballet, Agnes de Mille was in ry way a trailblazer. Not one to flinch from a macabre subject, here de Mille plumbs the psychologically harrowing and powerful story of Lizzie Borden, who in 1892 was accused of the brutal killings of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. Set to Bach s heavenly score, Stanton Welch s ballet is a showpiece for ABT s acclaimed roster of male dancers, exploding in stunningly fleet footwork and audacious contrapuntal movements of jumps and leaps. Michael Kors sleek costumes allow the dancers technique and sheer physicality to shine. is generously underwritten by an endowed gift from Cosby W. and Timothy M. George. MEADOW FANCY FREE Choreography by LAR LUBOVITCH Music by FRANZ SCHUBERT, GAVIN BRYARS, FERRUCCIO BUSONI AND WILLIAM DAVID BROHN Against a dreamy cloudscape, Lar Lubovitch achis his perfect vision of romance. Lyrical wavelike patterns for the corps de ballet give way to a tender pas de deux as two lovers soar heaven-bound. Choreography by JEROME ROBBINS Music by LEONARD BERNSTEIN Rarely has a choreographer burst upon the scene with such a clear voice as Jerome Robbins did in 1944, when ABT premiered his rgreen ode to three sailors on the town.
