Kansas City FilmFest celebrates the power of storytelling as a shared cultural experience through the cinematic arts. Our mission is to provide shared cinematic art experiences that entertain, educate and inspire audiences from children to adults. The Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee aspires to make the Kansas City FilmFest a major cultural event in Kansas City and the Midwest, attracting audiences and visiting artists from around the world. We do that by uniting area educational, cultural and film organizations in a celebration of independent filmmaking, bringing filmmakers and audiences together to hear from new and unique voices, discuss ideas and learn about the the world. Kansas City FilmFest is dedicated to screening the creativity and hard work of filmmakers from around the world and to supporting the independent filmmaking community in the Kansas City region. Background Statement The Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee was founded by Fred Andrews in 1996 through a collaboration with KCAI, UMKC, IFC, Film Society of Greater Kansas City, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Avila University & Science City. A successful screening of 10 short films in 1997, where 450 people jammed into UMKC's Royal Hall, was the first festival. The Jubilee received its 501(c)(3) designation in In addition to the governing board, there are two advisory boards composed of filmmaking, art and business professionals: the Heartland Advisory Board (Missouri and Kansas) and a US/International Advisory Board. In June 2008 the Jubilee combined with FilmFest Kansas City. The two names were combined for the new name, Kansas City FilmFest. Reel Spirit, a youth film competition since 2005, became part of the Jubilee in KC FilmFest 2013 screened over 100 films, drawing almost 4000 people to the Alamo Mainstreet. In 2014, in need of more space, KC FilmFest moved to the Cinemark on the Plaza, and screened over 120 films to an audience of almost 6,000 people. 2

4 CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement Kansas City FilmFest represents 22 years of a kaleidoscope of creative and passionate individuals working together to celebrate independent film, filmmakers and the power of story telling. The festival has provided thousands of filmmakers the opportunity to screen their work before enthusiastic audiences and share ideas and knowledge with other artists and film professionals from around the world. While the ever changing methods of filmmaking, film exhibition, and personal viewing technology create opportunities and challenges for the business of making and exhibiting films, one constant remains the same: the importance storytelling plays in our development as human beings and building our communities. Kansas City FilmFest may be using different equipment, but just as ancient peoples came together around the fire to hear stories about their ancestors, movie audiences come together for the shared experience of seeing today s stories played on the big screen. Movies are storie that inform us about others and about ourselves, they reflect who we are, where we ve come from, and inspire us to imagine what is possible. We re working to reach new and underserved audiences, find innovative ways to provide filmmakers with value and opportunity for their growth as artists, and foster interest in and the development of, future storytellers as filmmakers. Through partnerships with multiple community organizations, pursuing more sponsorships and donors, we re striving to expand the definition of the movie going experience for audiences and filmmakers. Like other arts organizations, we face the challenge of reduced funding and increasing costs, but at the same time we are humbled by the amount of work and dedication our audiences, volunteers and supporters give of their time and money to put on the festival. As a part of the community, we look forward to our continued mission of bringing audiences and filmmakers together to experience the power of storytelling through film for another 20 years.
