2 ADVERTISEMENTS

3 From the President In with the New! We begin the new year in a spirit of exploration and adventure as we head into a new season of programming at WGBH. This month, WGBH brings you a host of inspiring, entertaining and educational premieres from Masterpiece, American Experience, Nova, Antiques Roadshow and more! American Experience s Into the Amazon (pg. 1) tells the remarkable story of the 1914 journey taken by President Theodore Roosevelt (left) and Brazilian explorer Candido Rondon into the heart of the South American rainforest. With a crew of more than 140 Brazilians, Roosevelt and Rondon set out to explore an uncharted Amazon tributary, along the way battling the unforgiving landscape, disease and countless other dangers. Like all great journeys, the story of the Roosevelt-Rondon expedition reveals truths about not only the natural world, but human nature as well, says Executive Producer Mark Samels. Leadership arises from character, and the unforeseen poses a challenge to us all. How we respond shapes our own lives and those around us and sometimes history itself. We are proud to bring you this exciting story of humans pushing the limits of endurance and discovery. Some of the many premieres we have lined up for you this month spotlight adventure and exploration in other realms. In the much-anticipated second season of Victoria (pg. 14), the young queen ventures into new territory as a wife, mother and monarch. Nova takes us to the farthest frontiers of science with Black Hole Apocalypse. And Antiques Roadshow (pg. 1) kicks off a season full of first-time finds, including a bank robber s escape prop! January brings another first the debut of Classical.org, our new digital channel dedicated to making classical music accessible and relevant to all. The site s first year will be devoted to The Bernstein Experience celebrating the life and music of the acclaimed composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein on the 100th anniversary of his birth. In fact, WGBH is an official media partner of the Bernstein Centennial. These are just some of the riches that you can enjoy on WGBH this month and throughout 018. We are proud to share this exciting beginning to the new year and thank you for your unwavering support. 28 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR Bourdain Dishes to Boston Public Radio Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, host of CNN s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, pivots from exotic fare to handcrafted wares in a new series he discussed at the WGBH Studio in the Boston Public Library. Margery Eagan and Jim Braude, co-hosts of Boston Public Radio, interviewed Bourdain about his upcoming web show, Raw Craft with Anthony Bourdain, which features artisans who make goods the old-fashioned way. It s a series that highlights people who have decided, for whatever reason, to make things the old, long, extremely difficult, minimally profitable if profitable at all way, Bourdain said. He described these artisans as, people who hold themselves to an almost medieval standard of excellence. In one episode, Bourdain visits a company in Southbridge, Massachusetts, that makes handcrafted drums for the rock band, Green Day. Shifting gears in front of the live studio audience watching from the Newsfeed Café, Bourdain dished about his experience dining with President Obama at a small family-owned restaurant in Vietnam. He also recalled some of the unusual foods he has tried during his travels around the world, from raw seal eyeballs ( I ve eaten better things. ) to cobra heart ( It s like an oyster, but peppier. ). At the end of the conversation, Braude asked about the old adage, You are what you eat, to which Bourdain replied: I ve never had any kind of serious or close relationship with anyone who eats their steak well done. Listen to the full interview with Bourdain at wgbhnews.org. Eric in the Evening Remembering his Words with Music Hear the inspirational words of Martin Luther King Jr. in this annual tribute to the civil rights leader. Host Eric Jackson mixes speech excerpts with musical selections dedicated to the American icon and the ideas he championed. Tune in for a poignant remembrance of the man and the music that moved a nation. Sun, 1/14 at 9pm The Gangs of Nantucket For seven months, WGBH News Senior Investigative Reporter Phillip Martin researched and reported on a little-known issue in Massachusetts that has national resonance: An MS-13 and 18th Street gang presence on Nantucket. Martin s four-part series, The Gangs of Nantucket, follows the Mara Salvatrucha gang, best known as MS-13, based in El Salvador but now with roughly 10,000 members in the United States. Immigration officials in Massachusetts have arrested dozens of MS-13 and rival 18th Street gang members and deported them to El Salvador. Throughout his reporting, Martin interviewed key Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, Nantucket residents, police, the ACLU, Salvadorans, the sheriff of Bristol County, immigration lawyers and others. The gang presence is real, said Martin. But as the title of the series suggests, not all is as it seems. The Gangs of Nantucket first aired during 89.7 WGBH s Morning Edition with host Joe Mathieu. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station WCAI Pub Nights with a Twist Returns! By Beth Liles, WCAI Development Manager Need to get out of the house this winter? Join WCAI for another season of its monthly meet and greet, Pub Nights with a Twist, starting this month and running through April. Held at various restaurants and pubs throughout the Cape, Coast and Islands, Pub Nights are a fun way for WCAI enthusiasts listeners and supporters to spend an evening mingling with station staff, reporters and on-air hosts. The tradition began in 004 as a way to connect NPR listeners and WCAI staff during the slow winter months. Over the years, the events have only gotten bigger and better! Last year s highly popular Pub Nights with a Twist used themes related to WCAI s Living Lab, Poetry Sunday, Bird News and Local Food Report programming. Each night included a fun activity that highlighted one of WCAI s local shows, such as quizzes that challenged listeners to guess bird calls. On other nights, trivia, readings and a seed exchange helped get the conversation going. The 018 season will feature even more program-related content, plus plenty of time for socializing with fellow listeners and WCAI staff. Pub nights with a Twist are a unique and fun way to connect with our listeners and bring them closer to our mission and work, said Sarah Tribuzio, WCAI development director. Based on the positive feedback we received from listeners last year, we are excited to bring a fresh twist to our 018 lineup, she said. Stay tuned for details! New venues include Cape Cod Beer in Barnstable and O Shea s Olde Inne in West Dennis. Others will be announced soon. More information about WCAI s Pub Nights with a Twist, including an updated schedule, will be available on the events tab on WCAI s website. So, plan to come celebrate public radio with your friends and neighbors at the next Pub Night with a Twist!
