1 SHREK the Musical: Information, Audition Requirements, and Rehearsal Schedule Greetings, Potential Shrek Auditioners, Welcome to the Community Family of Performing Arts at FFCA! We are thrilled you are interested in auditioning for SHREK! This community will positively impact your life, change you deeply as an individual, and create an arts passion within you that will be lifelong! Welcome aboard! Yearly, the FFCA High School Performing Arts Department produces a professional musical, complete with set, costumes, props, lighting, audio, choreography, singing, and incredible acting! We are thrilled to be producing Shrek this year! *Please join the Edsby group called, SHREK, for up to date information and communications regarding auditions. IMPORTANT DATES: You must be available for all of these dates in order to be successfully cast Tech Week: Thursday, December 7- Thursday, December 14 (excluding Sunday, December 10) Production Weekend: Thursday, December 14- Sunday, December 17

2 AUDITION INFORMATION: General Information Meeting: Wednesday, August 30: Lunch, 11:30am This meeting is intended to answer any questions new auditioners may have, and to give a general breakdown of the audition process. 1. Audition: Part ONE: Singing Tuesday, Sept 5 & Wednesday, Sept 6, 3:30-6pm (this may run later, depending on how many auditioners sign up.) This is a singing audition. You will choose a song to sing from SHREK. A list is provided on the next page. You must come to the audition prepared to sing one of the songs from the list o Memorized o o With a Karaoke track background (see instruction at the end of this document) It is not required, but encouraged, to sing this as a performance, complete with choreography/ blocking that showcases the song s text. Auditioners must come prepared to hand in their signed Student Contract Forms before allowed to audition, located within this document. You are free to leave after your audition. You are only required to be at one of these dates. Sign up for an audition slot on the Drama Room door. This is a private audition. The only people in the room will be the auditioner, teachers, student directors, and stage management. 2. Audition: Part TWO: Monologues Monday, Sept. 11, Tuesday, Sept. 12, or Wednesday, Sept. 13: 3:30- at least 6pm Auditioners will prepare a 1-3 minute monologue (memorized) and perform You are free to leave after your audition. You are only required to be at one of these dates. Sign up for an audition slot on the Drama Room door. This is a public audition. Other auditioners are allowed to be in the room. 3. Audition: Part THREE: Call Backs Monday, Sept. 18, Tuesday, Sept. 19, or Wednesday, Sept. 20: 3:30-6pm Potentially the addition of more call backs Monday, Sept 25, Tuesday, Sept. 26, Wednesday, Sept 27. Call back auditions A Call back list will be posted on Edsby (make sure to join the Edsby group, Shrek ) You will be given an additional song(s) to learn directly from the chosen musical. You will be doing cold reads from the script. What this means is that you will be given a scene, and only a few minutes (if any) to rehearse it, then you will perform it with a group. You will be watched to see how you take direction. These are public. 4. CAST LIST POSTED: Wednesday, Sept. 27 via Edmodo. **Please note that anyone joining an FFCA athletics team during semester 1 will unfortunately not be eligible to participate in the musical as an actor, but you may be considered for tech. Since we rehearse only in Block 5, we will not be able to share you with a team sport in first semester. Thank you for your understanding!

3 Audition Song List 1. Watch the Netflix SHREK THE MUSICAL: Broadway Edition to get to know the show. 2. Choose a song from the list below 3. Download the music on itunes and listen, listen, listen, sing, sing, sing! 4. Find a karaoke version of the song to practice with; these are found on youtube! If you are having trouble, make sure you have joined the Edsby group, and you can ask other auditioners what they are using. 5. me with any and all questions 6. Learn and memorize the whole song. You may only sing 90 seconds of it, but be prepared to sing the song in its entirety. 7. If it has multiple singers in it, learn all parts that fit your vocal range. For example, if it is a song with Shrek and Fiona, and you are a female voice, learn only the Fiona lines. You may also be required to learn more pieces for the Call Backs process, explained above. My suggestion would be to learn as many pieces as you can fluidly, so that you can optimize your audition experience! CHARACTER Fiona (If you are truly interested in Fiona, learn all four songs) SONG(s) 1. I Know It s Today 2. Morning Person 3. I Think I Got You Beat (Just Fiona s part) 4. This is How Dreams Come True (just Fiona s part) Shrek 1. Big Bright Beautiful World 2. Who I d Be 3. I Think I Got You Beat (Just Shrek part) Donkey 1. Don t Let Me Go 2. Donkey Pot Pie (just Donkey part) 3. Make A Move Dragon 1. Donkey Pot Pie Lord Farquaad 1. The Ballad of Farquaad Pinnochio 1. Story of My Life Learn this in both your regular voice and a voice of Pinnochio so I can hear both) General Audition) Any of the above songs! Monologues 1. Choose a 1-3 minute monologue. Here are some sites with good choices: a. b. c. d. Remember to choose a school and age-appropriate monologue 2. Memorize it 3. Block it. If you are new to Drama, here are some general rules: a. Sit down at least once b. Stand for the majority of the piece c. Do not pace around the stage. Walk. Stop. Then Talk while standing firmly in place. d. Use 3 areas of the stage (this means that you can take 1-2 steps around the stage to add visual interest) e. Talk directly to the audience (not to the sides of the stage) f. Be downstage (closest to the audience) for the majority of the monologue

7 MUSICAL DECORUM Attendance Policy: You must be committed to the process to fully achieve excellence! 1. You are allowed two days of absences from school from now until the end of the production. If you miss more than two days, you must provide a doctor s note, or you will unfortunately be removed from the cast. This will also include absences from your other courses. 2. You are allowed three late arrivals to school. If you are late more than three times, you will unfortunately be at risk of being removed from the cast. The late arrivals can be discussed with me, as I do understand weather and traffic issues in winter. 3. Please see me if you have an absence that you cannot control. If you are sick, you will be required to bring a doctor s note to me (if it is your third or more absence). 4. Please try to schedule appointments at times other than during rehearsals. Please see me if you have already scheduled appointments that cannot be rescheduled. 5. When in doubt about an anticipated absence, please talk to me. The earlier you communicate, the better! I m on your side and want to keep you in the musical! 6. From December 7-17, it is integral to the cast and crew that all are in attendance at scheduled rehearsals. If there is a conflict, please bring this to me immediately. 7. The week following the production, Dec , all musical students are required to attend all classes. We do not get to skip school after our performances. Keeping up with your School Work: 1. You must contact all of your teachers and let them know you are participating in the musical. I have let all of them know, but they want to also hear from you. This is showing your excellence in character! 2. You need to keep up with your school work in all of your classes. Please see your teachers for any and all work that has been missed. 3. You are required to complete all missed assignments, quizzes, tests, exams, and work. 4. We will host make up test sessions after school during the week of Dec The week after the musical, December 18-22, we will have a wrap-up session. Being an FFCA Leader: 1. As a cast member in the musical, please know that you have been given a great privilege! Musicals are not requirements of our school or our program; they are created for amazing educational experiences for YOU! 2. You must work toward excellence in character: respect, responsibility, self-discipline, integrity, and compassion. 3. You must be in uniform, unless otherwise instructed. 4. When rehearsing outside of the drama room, you will be responsible and respectful citizens 5. Please remember this beautiful mantra: I am a positive person. I am responsible for the energy I bring to this school. I want you to love your involvement in the musical! The preceding requirements, while they may seem stringent, will ultimately increase our ability to enjoy the process and produce a fabulous, phenomenal, successful musical! On to excellence! I have read and understand the above policies. My signature below indicates that I am willing to make the commitment necessary to be fully involved in the musical.
