2 MAYOR WELCOME As Mayor of South Dublin County Council, I am delighted to welcome you to the third annual Red Line Book Festival, a wonderful series of events for readers, writers and book lovers organised by South Dublin Libraries. The Red Line Book Festival offers an opportunity for people of all ages to meet with first-class writers, poets and journalists from Ireland and abroad, some of whom are visiting South Dublin County for the first time. The Festival extends a warm welcome to international speakers Xiaolu Guo, Chinese author and film-maker, Alessandro Perissinotto, award winning crime fiction writer from Italy, and Tom Palmer, sports fiction writer for children from the UK. Particular Festival highlights include the ever-popular Readers Day with curators Dermot Bolger and Ciarán Carty at the helm; the Great War Roadshow, presented by historian and RTE broadcaster Myles Dungan celebrating the music of the First World War; and of course the annual TEDxTallaght, an exciting element of the Festival which is always sold-out. This year the theme is Theatre of Curiosity and once again there is a line-up of eclectic speakers who will inspire and engage their audience. The Festival also offers an exciting range of events for schools and children so there truly is something for everyone! South Dublin Libraries have always fostered creative writing and the Festival supports this not only through the Red Line Poetry Competition but also by providing a platform for budding writers to enrich their craft with a series of workshops led by published authors in various venues. The spirit of the Festival is to engage and involve the local community as audience and as participants, both bringing the arts to the local community and also channelling art from it. The Red Line Book Festival has been pivotal in promoting literacy and a richer cultural life in South Dublin County. On behalf of all involved with South Dublin County Council I would like to pay tribute to South Dublin Libraries and the many organisations and individuals both locally and nationally who have helped to make Red Line Book Festival happen. I have no doubt that the quality of the programme and its accessibility will attract many new audiences to South Dublin County audiences such as the delegation from Uppsala University Sweden who we are delighted to welcome back again this year. With its wonderful venues including Civic Theatre Tallaght, Rua Red and South Dublin library branches, Red Line Book Festival is sure to place Tallaght and South Dublin County firmly on the national cultural calendar.
