3 LOOKING AHEAD TO THE LOFT FILM FEST 2017 The Loft Film Fest was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for $30,000 to support the 2017 festival. We are grateful for this support that we believe will take the fest to the next level, validating the hard work of the Loft staff, Board of Directors and volunteers! One of our most exciting new projects is LOFT FILM FEST ON THE ROAD. We are the first American member of the Solar World Cinema network, which takes unique films to unusual places in 17 countries around the world. The Loft Film Fest on the Road will take select films from the festival to underserved urban and rural areas throughout Southern Arizona. We have a van outfitted with solar panels and lined with batteries to use the sun to power the projector and sound system and inflate the screen, making it possible for us to take films literally anywhere! Thank you to Technicians for Sustainability for donating the equipment and installation of the solar panels and batteries! LOFT FILM FEST AT A GLANCE This year, the Loft Film Fest made a major splash on the Tucson film scene, scoring the highest attendance numbers in our seven year history. This year also marked another fest milestone, as for the first time, we hosted two sold-out shows in our 500 seat Screen 1: A work-in-progress screening of the made-in-tucson western, Tombstone Rashomon, with cast and crew in attendance; and the Arizona Premiere of the new Chilean drama, Neruda, starring Gael Garcia Bernal! Special guests included internationally-celebrated filmmaker Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy, Walker), presenting his latest film, Tombstone Rashomon; award-winning cinematographer Kirsten Johnson (The Invisible War, Citizenfour, Fahrenheit 9/11), presenting her latest directorial effort, Cameraperson (which went on to be shortlisted for the 2017 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature); acclaimed, up-and coming filmmakers from around the world, including David Pablos (The Chosen Ones); and American astronaut Mark Kelly, presenting a Science on Screen event featuring the modern sci-fi classic, The Martian! Our curated selection of 40 feature films, shorts programs and special events included a 2017 Academy Award-nominee for Best Documentary Feature (Italy s Fire at Sea), and numerous international awardwinners (including 2016 Palme d Or winner I, Daniel Blake, and 2016 Ariel Award Winner for Best Film and Best Director, The Chosen Ones). The Loft Film Fest also presented several awards of its own, including the Lofty Achievement Award, the Kirby Dirk Social Justice Award, the CICAE Art Cinema Award (selected by an esteemed panel of international jurors), and the Loft Film Fest Audience Award! 3

5 2016 FESTIVAL STATISTICS & HIGHLIGHTS 5,385 people attended Loft Film Fest screenings and events! Opening night of the Loft Film Fest showcased the Arizona Premiere of Dominion, an acclaimed new drama charting the final hours in the life of famed Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, featuring an all-star cast including John Malkovich, Rodrigo Santoro and Ryhs Ifans as Dylan Thomas. Writer/director Steven Bernstein, whose long list of credits as a cinematographer includes Like Water for Chocolate and Monster, starring Charlize Theron, appeared at the screening for a post-film discussion with Peter Debruge, chief international film critic for Variety. This special opening night event, which included an outdoor party complete with champagne, h ors d oeuvres and live music, was presented by the prestigious New York Film Critics Series, which filmed the event for future inclusion in its captured live series of screenings at art houses across the country. Meanwhile, Screen 3 hosted the Arizona Premiere of The Lure, the world s first Polish mermaid horror musical! A total of 66 narrative films, documentaries and short film programs! Films from top festivals around the world, including Berlin, Cannes, Chicago, Hot Docs, Telluride, New York, Sundance, South by Southwest, Toronto, Tribeca and more! 12 Southwest Premieres, 32 Arizona Premieres, and 38 Tucson Premieres! The festival featured the U.S. premiere of the acclaimed film The Chosen Ones (winner of five Ariel Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director), with writer-director David Pablos in person, along with the World Premiere of Tombstone Rashomon, the new film from acclaimed director Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy), filmed at Old Tucson! 21 special guests in attendance, including actors, directors, producers and screenwriters! 10 FESTIVAL AWARDS ALEX COX LOFTY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Alex Cox is a British filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and nonfiction author praised for his idiosyncratic style and approach to scripts. His long list of credits, ranging from major studio films to cult classics to what he terms micro cinema, include Repo Man (1984), Sid and Nancy (1986), Straight to Hell (1986), Walker (1987), Highway Patrolman (1991), Revengers Tragedy (2002) and Searchers 2.0 (2007). He has worked in Nicaragua, Mexico, Spain, Holland, and Japan, and screened films in and out of competition at Venice, Cannes, Berlin, Tokyo, Rotterdam, Toronto and other festivals. His scripts and materials are archived at the National Media Museum in Bradford, England. He studied at Worchester College, Oxford; Bristol University; and UCLA, and he taught film production and screenwriting at the University of Colorado. Alex Cox has also directed documentaries, shorts, music videos, political election broadcasts, and stage plays. He is the author of three film-related books, X Films: True Confessions of a Radical Filmmaker, Ten Thousand Ways to Die (a chronological history of the Italian Western) and the 2016 release, Alex Cox s Introduction to Film: A Director s Perspective. He also writes regularly for The Guardian, Film Comment and Sight and Sound. His latest film project is Tombstone Rashomon, filmed at Old Tucson Studios. KIRSTEN JOHNSON KIRBY DICK SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD Kirsten Johnson has worked as an independent documentary cinematographer and director since She is the principal cinematographer on over 40 feature-length documentaries and has been credited on countless others as Additional Camera. Johnson recently directed her third feature-length documentary, Cameraperson, which was short-listed for the 2017 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. She also directed The Above, which premiered at the 2015 New York Film Festival as part of The Intercept s Field of Vision launch, spearheaded by Laura Poitras. Johnson s collaboration with Poitras is longstanding: Johnson is credited as cinematographer on Poitras s Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour and on Risk, Poitras s series about Julian Assange; she shared the 2012 Sundance Cinematography Award with Poitras for The Oath. Johnson is also a longtime collaborator with Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, shooting Outrage, This Film is Not Yet Rated, Derrida, and the Oscar-nominated The Invisible War. Johnson s 2004 film Deadline, co-directed with Katy Chevigny, was broadcast on primetime NBC, and won the Thurgood Marshall Award. Her first documentary feature, Innocent Until Proven Guilty, was broadcast on HBO. Her cinematography is featured in Michael Moore s Fahrenheit 9/11, Sandy McLeod s Oscar-nominated short documentary Asylum, Emmy-winners Ladies First and We Came to Testify, Tribeca winner Pray the Devil Back to Hell, and many Sundance premiere documentaries, including A Place at the Table and American Standoff.
