(Like, townspeople, Guard, or Jasmine ) 3. SIGN UP for your Audition time on the chart OUTSIDE THE MUSIC ROOM. One slot per person. If you are auditioning with a friend, please sign for one spot, and your friend would then sign up in the next spot, etc. No more than 3 friends per audition, which would equal 3 slots. (Example: 1 slot=1person, 2 slots=2 people, 3 slots=3people) 4. YOU MUST have an audition time and show up to participate in the musical Student s Name Grade you are in: (circle one) 4 5 Teacher s name Parents Name(s) Address Phone Numbers Adresses I will make an contact list for all participants keeping families in the know for rehearsals and other ALADDIN events. I will keep all addresses private via blind copy. Use an address that you will check regularly with your child. This saves printing paper and ink. CIRCLE the top 3 characters or parts that you wish to AUDITION FOR: GENIE JAFAR IAGO JASMINE ALADDIN SULTAN TOWNSPEOPLE(25+) GUARDS (10+) NARRATORS (5) Students please read and sign the agreement below: My name is and I promise to attend and do my best at all rehearsals. I will follow directions. I will keep a positive attitude so that our musical will be the best ever. If I am sick or unable to attend rehearsals, I must have a note from my parent or responsible adult to be excused. If I am absent from more than 3 rehearsals with an unexcused absence, I will be dropped from the cast roster. Sign here: 2 P a g e
PLEASE KEEP THE REST OF THIS PACKET! Dear Highland Students and Families, Disney s Jr. is a musical geared toward children in upper elementary and middle school. The performance dates are March 2-3-4, & 6. You must be available for all performance dates and rehearsals. We will have one Dress Rehearsal on March 2nd, one regular performance Friday the 3 rd, 7pm, and two Saturday performances March 4th, 2:30 PM and 6:00 PM. You will be responsible for providing a dinner break for your child between Saturday performances. Afterward, we hope to have a quick celebration at Highland. All students in grades 4 & 5 may audition for the musical. All lead, secondary and chorus parts are considered very important. The timeline from auditions to final performances is October through March 6 th, with possible encore performances of short scenes in the district. (It s a biggie commitment.) You, the student participating, must provide a completed application by your audition time. (Page 2 of this packet) TRANSPORTATION: Those participating will need to supply their own transportation after school. The school bus system will not provide transportation after rehearsals. SNACK TIME: At rehearsals, the first 10 minutes is snack time. Students should be ready to participate at 3:10 in the music room/cafeteria. PLEASE SUPPLY YOUR OWN SNACK. HOMEWORK: Students should work on any homework from their school day during rehearsals when they may have a break. BEHAVIOR DURING REHEARSALS: Students will not roam about the building if their scene is not rehearsing, but rather, students shall remain in the cafeteria area, cafeteria bathroom use, and water fountain, respectfully cooperating with the teachers and other students. Excessive mischief with frequent reminders to remain proactive may result in dismissal from the musical production. 3 P a g e
AUDITION MATERIALS: Students will sing an excerpt from the musical as well as provide facial expressions like surprised, afraid, Sad, Happy. Sing and speak with clear words, expression, with the ability to project your voice loudly without yelling. The song to practice will be provided when the student returns the audition application. The sooner you return your application, the sooner you can receive the right songs/script parts to practice! AUDITION DATES: October 24-28, 1:00-5:00 Auditions will be held during conference week in the music room. You must sign up for an audition time slot which is on my bulletin board outside the music room. Be available for call backs the following week. Being available is important. Character call-backs will be listed outside the classroom door as well. On a side note, do not worry about romantic scenes with and Jasmine. All scenes will be appropriate for their age level. (There will be NO kiss!! None! Zippo!) We ll try to post the results by November 7 (That s the goal) COSTUMES: We have the costumes. You will need to supply shoes. Canvas shoes without laces (like Toms but similar, cheaper imposter version) or sandals/flats are the shoe of choice. No heels. Neutral colors are recommended but if you already own a bright pair of shoes, please use those. No need to spend more. No flip flops. Students will be moving a lot on stage. Cast Descriptions: (from the director s guide) Disney s Jr is a live stage adaptation of an animated classic, and as such, your actors should play their characters a bit larger than life without sacrificing their human side. In other words, their characterizations can be elevated from real life, but shouldn t be made too over-the-top or cartoonish. Narrators: (boys and/or girls) There are 5 of these! Boys, girls, any combination. All should be able to sing well and speak clearly since they are responsible for setting scenes and advancing the plot. Comedic skills are a plus. Guards including Razoul, (boys and girls) need not be the strongest singers. Good comedic skills who can carry a tune. Played as highly incompetent, always making mistakes. Similar to the Three Stooges. (1 Razoul (head guard), and 5 or more guards) ENSEMBLE (boys and girls) consists of TOWNSPEOPLE, SHOP OWNERS, A BAKER, A MATRON, GIRL groupies, etc. About 25 to 30 people. They should be good actors who sing well. They are featured in ALL of the production numbers. Many featured moments for ensemble members. 4 P a g e
(boy) is the title character and therefore carries most of the show. He s charming, a great singer, a great actor, needs versatility to play the funny, slick prankster as well as the romantic lead. Genie (boy or girl) is fast-talking, scene-stealing funny man. Not necessarily the strongest singer and dancer, but the ability to do comedy is much more important. Jasmine (girl) is feisty and rebellious, yet genuinely sweet, somewhat trusting. NOT wishy-washy or too much of a brat either. She is the future leader with strong opinions on how things should be done. Strong Singer!! Iago (boy or girl) is a comedic role. Like the Genie, he or she doesn t need to be the strongest singer, but comedic skills are a MUST! Sarcastic jibes and audience asides while staying in character. Jafar s sidekick. Jafar (boy) is our villain. Possibly a taller boy. He will be a caricature of classic evil villains, not necessarily scary. Iago and Jafar also share some comic moments. Sultan (boy or girl) should be able to play a father figure convincingly. He s a bit scattered, but portrays love and care for his daughter Jasmine. No solo singing required. Magic Carpet (boys or girls) is a character in the show, no speaking parts. Depending on the situation, we will either cast a person with tumbling and beginner gymnastic skills, or two puppeteers to operate a Magic Carpet. The two Puppeteers must be able to work together creatively to make the carpet come to life. Chart showing which character is best suited for boys or girls: Character Boy Girl Yes No Genie Yes Yes Jasmine No Yes Iago Yes Yes Jafar Yes Maybe Sultan(ess) Yes Yes Narrators Yes Yes Guards Yes Yes Razoul (head guard) Yes Yes Ensemble Yes Yes Magic Carpet Yes Yes 5 P a g e
PARENT VOLUNTEERS: YES!!! You will receive information after audition results on ways to be involved in this production, from props and set making, costume organization, Make-up, backstage chaperon, to snack helper. There will be many ways to be involved if you would like. Work schedules are different for everyone, but if you want to be involved, I can find a way!! Here are some examples of where help is needed: PROPS SETS COSTUMES HAIR MAKE-UP CAST PARTY PUBLICITY TICKET SALES VIDEOGRAPHY PHOTOGRAPHY CHAPERONE SOUND/LIGHTS OTHER: we re happy to hear about it. REHEARSALS: Light rehearsals follow the next day, November 8. Please see the attached calendar. If there is no school, then there is no rehearsal, snow days included. The calendar will become more specific when results of the auditions are posted. Two weeks prior to the performance dates in March the rehearsals will be more intense and time consuming. During rehearsal, music is taught first, then the dances. After that we ll include blocking. Once all the music, speaking parts, dances, and blocking is learned, we ll rehearse with costumes, props, lighting, and scenery which is called a dress rehearsal. Tickets: Each student will receive two free tickets for their family for each show. Additional tickets are $5 each for people ages 3 and older. Children ages 2 and under are free when sitting on an adult s lap. This income from ticket sales helps to purchase music room supplies such as xylophones, drums, and more, as well as covers costs to produce this show. CALENDAR of EVENTS/REHEARSALS ATTACHED you ll find the schedule of audition week, and rehearsals during weeks following through the last performance date. SO SIGN UP! Fill out page 2 and return it! Sign your name in an audition slot. Sign-ups located outside the music room door. Example of signing up with 2 or 3 friends: Tues. Wed. Thurs.
