2 WELCOME! It s the beginning of a whole new era here at the Civic. After seventeen years we ve said our sad farewells to the incomparable Bríd Dukes who led the theatre with such distinction from the first moment the doors opened back in I m sure you will join me in wishing her a happy and long retirement - her garden will certainly be greener for her year round presence! I m honoured now to step into her mighty shoes and lead this great local theatre. I ve a whole heap of plans and ambitions but for now I want you to know we will never lose sight of our core values - offering the warmest of welcomes and a personal touch second to none, along with a host of great nights that bring joy, wonder, tears and laughter week in week out. All the world s a stage said the great man and as ever your local theatre provides a full range of enriching experience. Three of his very best - First Confession, My Oedipus Complex, The Genius - have now been brought together to forge a classic night of theatre entertainment. Richly evocative, hilariously funny, tenderly moving, this critically acclaimed production features stand out performances which bring back to joyful life the Ireland of the early 20th Century. 5 BAILEGANGAIRE By Tom rphy Presented by Nomad Theatre Network & Livin ed Theatre Company Tom rphy s extraordinary play (The Irish Times) centres around Mommo, who tells over and over again a story she never finishes of how the town came to be known as Bailegangaire, the town without laughter. Mommo is attended by her two granddaughters, Mary and Dolly. The younger women yearn to be free of the past in order to make a new beginning, and Mary comes to believe that to do so the story of Bailegangaire has to be concluded. The fact is, Selma Mae has just been released from a spell at a psychiatric hospital, her husband has just walked out and she s left asking the question, Who s life is it anyway? We are delighted to welcome this fabulous cast including Claudia Carroll (Fair City), Rose Henderson (Fair City, Father Ted) Isobel Mahon (Glenroe, The Clinic), Maria McDermottroe (Glenroe, Killinaskully) and Aisling O Neill (Fair City). Ireland s world renowned uid theatre company comes to the Civic to present a thrilling new play from an exciting new voice in Irish drama. With their father dying, Lynn and her older sister, Helen, return to their childhood home. Lynn s husband, Tony, arrives uninvited while Helen s teenage daughter Evvy is intentionally summoned. The weather is hot and sticky and relationships soon tangle into an intractable mess. Meadhbh McHugh - whose debut radio play, April Showers was produced by RTÉ Radio One garnering a PJ O Connor award for new writing in brings a darkly funny, sharply intelligent and fresh perspective to the rivalries and frailties among a family who must try to speak. A unique seating arrangement, raised above the stage, provides audiences with a fly-on-the-wall perspective into this unravelling domestic setting. 8 THE PILLOWMAN Written by Martin McDonagh Directed by Andrew Flynn Presented by Decadent Theatre Decadent Theatre s Irish premiere of The Pillowman, by internationally-acclaimed author Martin McDonagh (writer and director of feature films In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths), earned rave reviews on its first nation-wide tour in When stories become gruesome reality, surely it can only be the author who is to blame? Two police officers are determined to make a young writer pay the ultimate price for telling tales, when it transpires that the content of some of his short stories bear an uncanny similarity to horrific real-life crimes. 10 TALKING TO STRANGERS: An Evening with Michael Harding Michael Harding is one of Ireland s most distinctive writers and storytellers and his recent memoirs Staring at Lakes and Hanging With The Elephant have touched a chord with audiences throughout the country. Now he returns to the Civic with his latest book, Talking To Strangers and to ruminate on his life over the past 18 months, playing the Bull McCabe on stage in Dublin, struggling with self-doubt, faith, and psychotherapy, and the chaos of building an extension to his home near Lough Allen. Now working as a solo act based in Los Angeles and touring internationally with some of America s biggest and best orchestras, Chloë is coming home to play a series of concerts throughout Ireland. The show will feature all the hit songs from her Celtic Woman albums plus a selection of standards from Hollywood s vintage magic-of-the-movies era. GREEN & BLUE by Laurence McKeown Presented by Kabosh in association with Diversity Challenges Exploring the realities faced by those who patrolled the border during the height of the conflict in the North, this new multi-media play looks at the person behind the uniform and the different human experiences of two individuals on either side of a man-made line in the ground. Directed by Paula McFetridge, Green & Blue is based on an oral archive of past and serving RUC and An Garda Síochána officers. 11 Maeve Binchy s... MINDING FRANKIE Adapted for the stage by Shay Linehan Presented by Breda Cashe Productions Noel Lynch gets a call from Stella, with whom he shared a drunken weekend. She is dying of cancer but not before giving birth to Noel s child, leaving him to raise Frankie alone. Noel must prove that he can fill a woman s shoes and become the best mother that he can be. Along the way, he discovers that it takes a whole village to rear a child, or at least a street.this vibrant production offers a joyful evening enriched by life, love, and second chances.
