3 From the President A Historic Milestone This month we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Basic Black, the nation s longest running public affairs program devoted to the concerns of African Americans. Originally called Say Brother, the program was created in response to the historic events of In the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, emotions were raw and cities across the country exploded with violence. But Boston remained calm, in large part because city leaders turned to WGBH to broadcast the James Brown concert that had long been scheduled for the Boston Garden on April 5. Televising the concert allowed people all over the city to experience the event together at home while sharing in the grief gripping the nation. The concert was rebroadcast during the days that followed, allowing people to continue to engage with Brown s music and with the calming leadership he exhibited on stage. Over its long history, Basic Black has hosted the nation s most influential thinkers, artists, politicians and activists, bringing diverse voices into the homes of viewers in New England and across the country. Today, Basic Black, hosted by Callie Crossley, is expanding its focus to include people in many communities of color and the issues they face. Recent shows have focused on the quinceañera, the coming-of-age tradition in Spanishspeaking cultures, the challenges facing LGBT people of color, and legal action by immigrants from El Salvador and Haiti. Basic Black is a show unlike any other started by people of color devoted to covering stories of interest to people of color, says Delores Edwards, series producer for Basic Black. The fact that we ve been able to do that continuously for 50 years is a feat in and of itself and a testament to WGBH s commitment to providing a platform for diverse voices and perspectives. I am proud of the role WGBH played in helping keep the peace in Boston after the death of Dr. King 50 years ago and of the decision to create Say Brother in the months that followed. Basic Black is no longer just a television show you can watch the program on Facebook each week and connect with the show on social media. But Basic Black s mission remains unchanged to create space for all people to participate in conversations that matter. This Friday, tune in to Basic Black to celebrate this remarkable program and learn about the issues facing your neighbors. Your support makes all of it possible, and for that, I thank you. 25 Ways to Tune In Digital:. RCN: 94 Comcast: 956 Cox: 807 FiOS: 473 Charter: 181 Bringing You the The Channel offers the best of PBS news and nonfiction programming, along with exclusive series like AfroPop, Global Voices, Voces and Pacific Heartbeat. also produces such original series as Local, USA, featuring diverse stories culled from public television stations and independent producers nationwide, and the award-winning America ReFramed, a showcase for independent films by and about communities of difference. In April, the theme for the Channel spotlight is Community. Addressing a Crisis The ZIP code 5306 in Milwaukee has a special designation: The black men who live there have the highest percentage of incarceration in America up to 6%. This film personalizes the crisis of racially biased jail sentencing in the uniquely American era of mass incarceration and depicts the destructive hold it has on the families. Through the stories of three 5306 residents, witness the extreme challenges a community faces when more than half of its young men are imprisoned. America ReFramed/Milwaukee 5306 Tue, 4/3 at 8pm Hope for Local Communities The US incarcerates Americans at unprecedented rates worldwide. And within three years of release, approximately two-thirds are re-arrested and sent back to prison. One former prisoner named Louie Diaz works to reverse this demoralizing trend by guiding five previously incarcerated men safely through the minefield of life outside of jail back into their communities. Filmed on the streets of Lowell and Lawrence, Massachusetts, this documentary follows the efforts of these men to stay sober and crime-free as they rebuild their lives beyond prison walls. America ReFramed/Beyond the Wall Tue, 4/10 at 8pm is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and the National Educational Telecommunications Association. Like the channel? Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. Making the Grade Step into the first high school in the United States that provides education to adults serving time in jail. Considered the crown jewel of the San Francisco Sheriff s Department s re-entry program, the school offers hope to those who look forward to a future beyond prison. This film captures a semester inside the school as inmates, teachers and deputies prepare for graduation day. See the shift from punishment to rehabilitation at a time when the nation is questioning what justice really means. America ReFramed/The Corridor Tue, 4/17 at 8pm Eye on Inclusion In 015, an art collective called Postcommodity worked with communities on both sides of the American- Mexican border to install a twomile-long series of tethered balloons, each measuring 10 feet in diameter and floating 100 feet above the ground. The ambitious project, called the Repellent Fence, used an emblazoned symbol known as the open eye that has existed for indigenous people for thousands of years. Directed by Sam Wainwright Douglas, this film demonstrates the power of art to break down barriers, symbolically bringing together cultures that inhabited these lands long before borders were drawn. America ReFramed/Through the Repellent Fence Tue, 4/4 at 8pm Pop and Pride When Poi E hit the charts in 1984, New Zealanders finally had an unofficial national anthem they could dance to. Director/writer Tearepa Kahi tells the story of Dalvanius Prime, the man who pulled together a talented bunch of collaborators to record the first Māori pop song and crowdfund a brilliant music video that captured the pride and resilience of his hometown. Don t miss the premiere of Pacific Heartbeat s seventh season for a feel-good film full of music and fun from a diverse community of Kiwis who helped bring the song to life. WGBH News Takes a Deep Dive into Bomb Cyclone A major bomb cyclone storm hit New England this winter and caused massive and unexpected flooding damage. WGBH News took a look at the storm and its connection to climate change, exploring issues such as which preparations worked and didn t work, and what damage was left behind. The idea was to rapidly pull together a series of stories that connected the January storm and its historic flooding with our changing climate and the future of our coasts, said Sean Corcoran, senior managing editor at WGBH News. The four-part series debuted in February, beginning with Gabrielle Emanuel s report on places where the storm waters were least expected. The second installment, reported by Bob Seay, took a look at Boston s Seaport neighborhood, which is being developed with sea-level rise in mind but still took quite a hit. In the third installment, Craig Lemoult examined the plan to use the existing Moakley Park to protect its nearby Dorchester/South Boston neighborhood from storm waters. In the final installment, reporter Arun Rath discussed the shock of residents after the storm and asked whether we are in climate change denial. To check out the series, visit news.wgbh.org/term/bostonsrising-waters for more information. 29 99.5 WCRB Join Us Overnight! By Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager As the calendar turns to April, and the nights get shorter, it s time for our Explore! readers to find out about WCRB overnights hosted by Colin Brumley. If you listen already between midnight and 5am, here s a peek inside. If you don t listen yet, what are you waiting for? Here s Colin s perspective: The overnights can be an overlooked part of the day, but I see this special time as an opportunity to explore a vast world of music from many centuries. We strive to bring you a listening experience that is both soothing and compelling, whether you re winding down for the day or looking for a late-night work accompaniment. For those of you who stay awake in the wee hours, the music is handpicked to provide a sense of companionship. You will enjoy everything from the warm intimacy of solo piano to the majestic force of a full symphony. This music is also the perfect late-night study soundtrack a wonderful benefit for Boston s thousands of college students. Each overnight begins with the Midnight Masterpiece something special to enjoy as the clock strikes 1. Toward the early hours of the morning, the music evolves into a predawn warm-up, helping those of you who awake before the sun to get a running start to your day. Each night, I get to share long stretches of uninterrupted music no commercials, no nonsense. That s something you can get only on WCRB. Whether you re a night owl or an extreme early bird, keep WCRB close during the overnight hours. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Sarah Tan Joins WCAI Newsroom By Mindy Todd, WCAI Host and Managing Director for Editorial WCAI welcomes reporter Sarah Tan to our newsroom. Tan joined WCAI in March after many years in radio and print journalism. I m so excited to join the wonderful staff at WCAI and to have a chance to contribute to the amazing reporting they do, from in-depth series reporting to covering daily news, she said. I feel honored to have the opportunity to report on everything from oceanic issues to social issues in such a beautiful place, with a small but passionate team. Stay tuned in April for the WCAI series, In the Shadow of Extinction: The Plight of the North Atlantic Right Whale. Scientists are now predicting right whales could become extinct over the next 0 years. Fewer than 450 of these whales exist and, of that number, only about 100 are breeding females. Our series looks at what may be behind why there are low birth rates, how the possibility of new technology in the lobster industry could help, and why we should care. Prior to that, she was a print journalist covering education for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. After earning a degree in writing at Johns Hopkins University, she got her master s degree at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. I m sure there will be no shortage of stories that will take me to places I ve never been and put me a little out of my comfort zone one of the reasons why I love reporting so much, Tan said. WCAI News Director Steve Junker notes that it takes a lot of legwork to cover stories across our listening area from Nantucket to the Outer Cape, on the Vineyard and the South Coast. Having Sarah join the newsroom strengthens us and our ability to cover news and stories across our region, Junker said. We ll be keeping her busy, looking closer at a range of issues, including education, environment, immigration, energy and much more, he added. Tan is contributing to the WCAI newsroom already and is enjoying meeting people and getting to know what makes the Cape, Coast and Islands such a special place. It s great to have a reporter join us with such enthusiasm and with such an interest in learning the region, Junker said. 6am 7am 8am 10am 11am 1pm 1pm pm 3pm 4pm 5pm 6pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 1am BBC Update Living on Earth Weekend Edition Wait, Wait Don t Tell Me!
