3 From the President The Power of Song As a boy growing up in New York City, I sang in a choir. That experience instilled in me not only a lifelong love of music, but also an appreciation for the joy of performing and sharing music and songs with others. And I am not alone. Today, more than 40 million Americans sing with a choir, a cappella, chorus or other music group. Inspired by these numbers and the success of our Western Massachusetts sister station WGBY s own choral series WGBH is proud to bring you Sing That Thing!, a new local series showcasing New England s best amateur groups in a friendly competition that celebrates the diversity of song. Over the course of six episodes, you ll hear moving performances by 3 singing teams in four categories (high school, college, adult small group and adult large group ensembles) more than 600 singers in all. This production is very much a collaborative effort. We ve lined up three outstanding coaches-judges: Jane Eaglen, New England Conservatory professor and opera star; Larry Watson, Berklee College of Music professor, vocalist and producer; and our own Jared Bowen, WGBH arts editor. We ve also worked in partnership with Emerson College, whose students teamed up with WGBH professionals to learn how to shoot and edit a series. And we ve called on the talents of international composer Jim Papoulis to create an original work that will be interpreted/performed by the eight finalists in our hour-long grand finale (page 18). Tying it all together is our talented host Anthony Trecek-King, director of the Boston Children s Chorus and a consummate choral master and communicator. Anthony s enthusiasm for this art form is infectious. So many cultures sing, and these choral exchanges can bring communities together, says Anthony, winner of the President s Committee on Arts & Humanities 013 Award. In a choir, every voice is different, yet each is equally important. As many of you know firsthand, choruses and vocal ensembles are a vital part of the cultural fabric of our communities. They are a focal point for joyful, shared experiences. I hope you ll tune in Sing That Thing! and be as carried away as I am by the power of voices raised together in song. With gratitude for all you do in support of WGBH, Jon Abbott Special Thanks! We are grateful to the following organizations and individuals for helping us launch this exciting new series. Sing That Thing! is sponsored by The Massachusetts Cultural Council, with additional funding provided by The George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation, New England Baptist Hospital, The Boston Foundation, Eran and Yukiko Egozy, and Melinda and James Rabb. Springtime in a Bowl Salads are a terrific way to turn vegetables into a main course. When Martha Stewart invites guests to lunch, she loves to serve frisée aux lardons, a savory French salad made with spicy greens, crisp bacon, creamy poached eggs and warm vinaigrette. Her triedand-true chopped salad, featuring crunchy veggies and piquant herbs, truly looks as wonderful as it tastes. The culinary classicist also tosses up a masterful Caesar salad and, when a lighter treat is in order, composes an elegant plate of stacked butter lettuce enlivened by citrus and fresh ginger. Martha Stewart s Cooking School/Salads Sat, 5/16 at 6pm From Garden to Table After a long cold winter, says award-winning chef Joanne Weir, I get so excited about spring, because I love cooking with beautiful green spring vegetables and herbs. Tag along with Joanne on a visit to Beet Generation Farm in scenic Sebastopol, CA, as she gathers produce with her friend Libby, an organic farmer. Then head to Thistle Meats in nearby Petaluma for a perfect cut of beef. Finally, watch as Joanne prepares a fragrant meal of spring panzanella, rosemary-skewered skirt steak with lemon-herb gremolata and jasmine rice with lemon zest. Joanne Weir Gets Fresh/Spring Vegetables Sun, 5/17 at 5:30pm is produced and distributed by APT, WNET New York Public Media and WGBH Boston in association with the National Educational Telecommunications Association and PBS. createtv.com 9

28 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR WGBH News Expands Coverage At a time when many local newsrooms are contracting or closing, WGBH News is bucking the trend. We are excited to add new dimensions to WGBH News on-air and online reporting, says Phil Redo, WGBH general manager for radio and news. We re bringing in expert individuals who will help us more fully explore the local issues that matter to Boston and make connections to topics that are closer to home than we realize. Here s what s happening: Juliette Kayyem Joins WGBH News; Launches Security Mom Podcast Renowned international and homeland security expert Juliette Kayyem recently joined WGBH News as a contributor. She is adding her unique blend of expertise across domestic and international security, politics and law to WGBH News radio, TV and digital programming, including Morning Edition and Greater Boston, while continuing to appear regularly on 89.7 s Boston Public Radio with Jim Braude and Margery Eagan. Presenting International News from a Local Angle In April, WGBH News and The GroundTruth Project began bringing listeners a new monthly series presenting international news with a local perspective. Reported and produced by Elizabeth Ross from WGBH News and The Takeaway, Eric in the Evening Jazz with Jarrett Versatile pianist Keith Jarrett was born May 8, Over his 50-year career, he has recorded an astonishing range of works: solo piano, small group and orchestral; improvisational and composed; jazz, fusion and classical. This evening s show will focus on the jazz side of his distinctive repertoire. Sun, 5/10 at 9pm the series provides local context to stories uncovered by international reporting from GroundTruth. Started by Charles Sennott, co-founder of GlobalPost, and headquartered at WGBH, the non-profit GroundTruth Project aims to spread freedom of expression in developing countries by training a new generation of correspondents. The editorial partnership with WGBH News endeavors to close the gap between international current affairs and their relevance to local residents. NECIR Moves to WGBH Newsroom; Isaiah Thompson Joins Investigative Team Expanding a partnership that began in 013, the New England Center for Investigative Reporting (NECIR) is now fully housed within the WGBH newsroom. NECIR has made several new reporting and managerial hires in recent months, including reporter Isaiah Thompson, who is filing stories exclusively for NECIR and WGBH News, bolstering both newsrooms investigative journalism. 29 99.5 WCRB Music that Matches the Mood By Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Manager It s May, which means the carefree days of summer are almost upon us. Signs of the season are all around, and here at WCRB, we ll play music that matches the mood. That s why you ll be hearing the wonderful music of our beloved Boston Pops Orchestra. We re featuring four concerts three led by Keith Lockhart, one by John Williams in our Saturday 8pm slot. You can find detailed information about the performances on our website, classicalwcrb.org. May is also Mother s Day month, and we d like to pay homage to these wonderful women with special listener-submitted dedications. Find us on Facebook (Facebook.com/99.5WCRB) and tell us a piece you d like to dedicate to your special someone then on Mother s Day, Sunday, May 10, we ll play as many of these dedications as we can. Make the moms you know happy with the music they love from the ones they love! Also, I want to remind you to join us every Sunday (at 8pm) What s on 99.5 WCRB 5am 10am 3pm 8pm Monday Friday Mornings with Laura Carlo 5am Writer s Almanac Classical Music with Alan McLellan Classical Afternoons Late Nights on WCRB 8pm Boston Symphony Orchestra (Mon) The Symphony at 8 (Tue Fri) 6am 1pm 6pm 8pm 10pm Saturday as we explore the rich, exciting world of opera. This month we ll span four centuries: On May 3, we ll air Francesco Cavalli s rarely heard comedy L Ormindo; on May 10, listen for Mozart s charming and also rarely heard Il re pastore (The Shepherd King); on May 17, enjoy one of the cornerstones of opera, Wagner s Lohengrin (left), and on May 31, we will conclude the month with Puccini s final masterpiece, Turandot. Now, if you re paying attention, you will have noticed that we left out Sunday, May 4. That s part of Memorial Day Weekend, which comes early this year (May 3 5). WCRB will be celebrating the unofficial start of summer with a weekend filled by hour after hour of the greatest music, all selected to match the spirit of the season. As for opera, that Sunday night (May 4) we ll focus on vocal music and choral favorites as part of our Holiday Weekend Spectacular. Before I sign off, I want to draw attention to some of our weekly features on WCRB. We select a brand-new recording as our CD of the Week and play samples from it all week long to give you a full picture of what you can expect to hear. Plus, we share lots of extra content about the recording and artist on our website. Also, every Tuesday at noon, we feature a brand-new release on This Just In. It s a great way for you to find out what s new from the many small and large record labels around the world. WCRB plays more music than any other radio station in Boston, plus we connect our listeners to what s happening in and around the city. If you re a regular listener, thank you; if you re not, what are you waiting for? 99.5 WCRB is Boston s Classical Station. Have a happy May! 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Making It Work By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial The Cape and Islands may not be the first places that come to mind when you think of manufacturing, but you may be surprised to learn what s happening here. Our region boasts a long tradition of manufacturing. Some of the industries have faded away or sent their work overseas, but WCAI s newest radio series Making It Work: Manufacturing on the Cape, South Coast and Islands found that new technologies have created manufacturing opportunities here, particularly when it comes to highly specialized and technical products. There s this idea that Cape Cod and the Islands economy is completely driven by tourism and that little or nothing is manufactured here, says managing editor of news Sean Corcoran. But not only do companies continue to cater to traditional industries like cranberry farming and shellfishing, there also are new, cutting-edge technology-related businesses that are rapidly growing. In recent years, the push has been to promote and develop advanced manufacturing making things here that really couldn t be produced properly elsewhere. For example, in Falmouth and Bourne on Upper Cape Cod, the past several years have seen remarkable growth in industries related Assembling a part at Mass Automation in Bourne Making a wine rack out of a cranberry box at Hayden Manufacturing, West Wareham to underwater robots. And that growth has led to the expansion of related businesses, such as aluminum and steel work. Our five-part series also looks at different manufacturing-related businesses on Martha s Vineyard and Nantucket. Some of those businesses rely on well-known brands to promote and sell their products, while others say they benefit from the available workforce, a population originally drawn to Nantucket and the Vineyard by the casual island lifestyle. Making It Work: Manufacturing on the Cape, South Coast and Islands will air from May 4 to May 8 during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Listen online at capeandislands.org.
