3 Welcome to Redtwist! The Chicago storefront theatre experience is unique and has become an iconic brand worldwide. There are small theatres in every corner of the globe, but there is nothing quite like what has been happening here for nearly half a century, and it is this: a relentless stream of exciting young companies producing powerful plays with terrific actors in very intimate spaces for over four decades non-stop. On any evening year-round, you can choose from among five or ten dazzling storefront experiences. As we forge ahead through our second decade in this Bryn Mawr Avenue storefront, Redtwist is proud to continue this unique tradition of Chicago theatre. We didn t blaze the trail, but we intend to keep it hot. In addition to placing you right on top of the action in a great play, we purposely aim to provide a clean, hospitable space, from our lobby to our restrooms to the theatre itself, as well as large, comfy chairs. And so, while Redtwist is small, we hope your experience here is extra-large. This is our 12th full season, featuring the theme of Games People Play, with an eclectic mix of provocative plays which address the concept that everyone has an agenda, and they will try to achieve it regardless of the cost to their own well-being, and that of others. This season covers a wide swath of territory, from legendary American classics like Who s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, to timeless buried treasures like Arthur Miller s Incident at Vichy, to acclaimed modern plays like The Drawer Boy. The season wraps up with two premieres of great new stories: The Realization of Emily Linder and The Seedbed. All these plays feature the terrific artistic talent that you have come to expect from Redtwist shows. Our esteemed directors this season include Jason Gerace, Ian Frank, Hans Fleischmann, Steve Scott, and new company member, Scott Weinstein. They will orchestrate a growing pool of Redtwist actors to complement our nucleus whom you might have seen before: Elizabeth Argus, Adam Bitterman, Abby Dillion, Jacqueline Grandt, KC Karen Hill, Aaron Kirby, Brian Parry, Debra Rodkin, Kathy Ruhl, and Michael Sherwin. In addition, Redtwist has invited some exciting young companies to co-produce intriguing new plays in our Guest Company series. Learn more about these shows at Happy 100th birthday to Arthur Miller (Oct 17, 1915 Feb 10, 2005) who left an unimaginably rich and fascinating theatrical legacy, and whose plays will provide wisdom to future generations forever. Thanks for coming to Redtwist! Michael Colucci, Artistic Director 3

Our first day of rehearsal would have been Arthur Miller s 100th birthday. It s the kind of coincidence that brings the timeless quality of his work into sharp focus. It also begs the question, what makes a play timeless? How could this story, which is set a further twenty-two years before its premiere in 1964, still so keenly unsettle us now? A timeless play must ask questions that transcend its specific setting, politics, and history. It must dig deeper into the universal, fundamental situation we all experience as human beings. That s what I see in this play. It s what I can t help but see in this play because I am who I am. And because I m not who I am not. But, that ambiguity is the facet I ve come to enjoy most about working on this production; the courageously infuriating way that Miller refuses to settle in one easy moral, or ethical, or even emotional place. How what we instinctively feel from moment to moment in this play tells us more about our own true selves than it does about the characters on stage. There s a line towards the end of the play about the importance of sharing what we ve grown to know. I think I can speak for the ensemble when I say that we all acutely feel both the obligation and the pride of sharing this story with you. Sharing that can be done only in person, night after night, live, and (as always at Redtwist) closer than ever before. 4

Bryn Mawr, Chicago (773) (just a few doors east) The best little sandwich and ice cream shop in the city, with wifi and fireplace Terrific paninis and deli sandwiches, dazzling desserts, fabulous ice cream sundaes, and gourmet coffee 15

16 urrent (2015) photo showing both storefronts, displaying hit show Who s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? AN OPPORTUNITY IS KNOCKING!!! Google Maps view, L to R: ant storefront next to alley, 2 vacant storefronts which Redtwist is temporarily using, and Redtwist Theatre (and it s right next door) You might have noticed the vacant space next door and next door to that. So we put our thinking caps on. Hmmm, there is no true storefront theatre complex anywhere in the city. And Redtwist s performance space could use a little breathing room. A Redtwist Theatre Complex would be a really cool thing on Bryn Mawr Avenue. It would be perfect for what we ve already been doing producing great plays as part of our regular Redtwist season collaborating with exciting young companies to produce their plays creating an artistic home for many fine theatre artists serving the vibrant Edgewater community Plus we can do so much more hold classes, rent rehearsal space, host more events the opportunities are endless. So we re going to try to do something about this vacant space right next door. Can you help? We need an architect to design the space for the main floor and the basement. an added arts management staff member to manage the project and space a fundraising campaign to launch the project ideas, donations (monetary and in-kind), volunteers (administrative, construction, electrical, and computer networking assistance) Our initial fundraising goal was $60,000 before the end of 2015 so we could commit to the space. So far we ve managed to raise several thousand dollars and have extended the timeline into the early part We re temporarily using the space at a deep discount for dressing rooms for our large cast for Incident at Vichy and for rehearsals. We don t know if this will all come together before another business rents the space at full market value, but we have to try because opportunity is indeed knocking. We d be thrilled if you want to help. Thank you and Happy New Year! Michael Colucci, Artistic Director, michael@redtwist.org Jan Ellen Graves, Managing Director, jan@redtwist.org 16
