3 smt synopsis All students enrolled in Summer Music Theatre are cast in the show. Students MUST be enrolled in SMT in order to audition. This is not a popularity contest, we truly cast our shows for the BEST possible outcome. It is our belief that all of our actors share this philosophy. SMT provides students with skills strengthen their acting and to take back to their individual schools. We provide workshops and additional performance opportunities. Students meet new or returning, likeminded people and develop lifelong friendships. Students will meet as a full cast most days, our younger students will only meet 3 days a week for the first few weeks (see the schedule). Students can purchase water and snacks at SMT or bring their own. All actors and technicians should have water to drink each day. We rehearse daily, often there is dancing, singing and acting going on. Students will also work on prop construction, set painting and scene changes. We do the impossible, we put together a full show in six short weeks. The first week is auditions, the last week is performance and the week before that is tech week. So really, we have 3 weeks (one of which is the Fourth of July) to make this show happen. We also make all efforts to allow students time with their families. Please make us aware of your schedule so we can place you in the best spot for you and for the show. (See Dates not to be missed below) Week six of SMT students will perform in a Broadway style production. This year we are flying several actors (even more than last year) with services provided by a professional flying company, ZFX. With sell out performances, SMT provides a fantastic opportunity for our actors, technicians and pit to excel. Ticket Information We sell our tickets using an online service. Our parent volunteers handle this portion of the show. Ticket prices are as follows: $12 = Students/Seniors. $15 = Adults Volunteers have first selection of seats at our presale REGISTRATION: Students participating as actors in district will pay $375. Out of district will pay $475. This money goes to Summer Learning and not the show. Students must be registered for SMT prior to auditions on June 20 th. The expectation is that all students in the SMT program will accept the role given. All casting is done for the best possible outcome of the show. We understand that many of our actors/singers/dancers have other opportunities or outside events that may exclude them from auditioning. This year PRE AUDITIONS may be done by contacting jpillsbury@rochester.k12.mi.us this will allow us to determine where you will best fit in the show. Registration information can be found at the Rochester Community Schools Website under under Schools, then Summer Learning, choose either resident High School/ Middle School or Non Resident Direct copy and paste Additional information will be posted online at as well as our Facebook page These pages will also be used as our primary form of communication for the entire summer. The MUNY version also has Evening Star. The RSC version also includes Poppies (Optimistic Voices) and If I Were King of the Forest. This RSC version is a more faithful adaptation of the film. A more technically complex production, it recreates the dialogue and structure of the MGM classic nearly scene for scene, though it is adapted for live stage performance. The RSC version s musical material also provides more work for the SATB chorus and small vocal ensembles. 10 ACTING AUDITION: All actors wishing a speaking role, to be considered for top chorus and or one of the break out roles should prepare a 1-2 minute monologue. Those not wishing to secure a speaking part should still audition with the Munchkin Audition piece below. If you do not want to audition just tell us in advance. The rubric for the larger monologue is listed on the site at the site. We recommend that you select contemporary monologues (written in 1950 present) that you can easily relate to and are appropriate for your age. We prefer that you avoid verse plays, as the language often becomes more of a barrier than a window. Also avoid using profane or questionable language. We do not recommend pieces from films or original material. If you choose a piece from a monologue book, please be aware that many other actors may have also and your choice, as a result, is likely to be overdone. Make sure you have read the play from which you chose your monologue; the directors may wish to discuss it with you. Finally, remember we are most interested in seeing who you are in the audition. We want to see you reflected through the characters you play and the pieces you perform. Pick good material for yourself, prepare it, and do it well. We want to see skill and potential, so play to your strengths. Be Professional Show the casting director how reliable you are by showing up at least fifteen minutes before the audition. Be courteous, but don t be too talkative. Don t pester crew members or fellow actors with idle conversation. Spend your time privately readying yourself. In general, think of an audition like a job interview. Avoid inappropriate behavior, whether it's chewing gum, using profanity, behaving too shyly or brashly, or making long-winded speeches as to why you are perfect for the role. Dress Appropriately Usually, it is best to wear business casual attire. You want to exhibit charm and professionalism, but you don t want to look like a stockbroker or a banker. Remember, many new actors make the mistake of wearing costumes to audition. Perhaps they say to themselves: Hey, I ve got a great pirate outfit from last Halloween! I ll wear that! Sadly, this is bound to cause casting directors to chuckle under their breath. They might be amused, but they will definitely not take the actor seriously. If you are auditioning for a dancing part in a musical, wear dance attire. It should not be anything flashy or expensive. Any choreographer worth her salt will focus on your dancing ability, not your sequins. Perfect The Monologue Make certain that you have rehearsed your monologue completely. Do not just know the lines; know the character you are becoming. Let the directors see a striking difference between the person that just said hello to them, and the character that is now coming to life on the stage. At the same time, be flexible with the audition material. They might have you read the lines over, asking you to take on a different personality. Sure, you may do great when you perform the monologue with tears in your eyes, but be prepared if they ask you to do the same lines in a calm, icy voice or a whimsical British dialect. If given the chance, show them that you can interpret the role in many different ways. 10

11 Get to Know the Play Many auditions involve reading sides. Sides are small, hand-picked portions of a script. Sometimes they are a brief monologue. Sometimes they are short scenes involving two or more characters. Most of the time, you won t know exactly what scene you ll be reading. In that case, you ll want to familiarize yourself with the play or musical in general. If you are auditioning for a popular play feel free to buy a copy of the script online or at your local book store. Better yet, visit your local library. Watching a film version of the play might help as well. However, don t simply mimic the movie actor s performance. Casting directors want to see what you can create, not what you can imitate. The Wizard of Oz is iconic and watching the movie will be very helpful for you to grasp both the music and the plot. Practice Cold Reading If the play is rather obscure or brand new, it may be difficult to purchase a copy. In that case, you ll want to polish up your cold reading skills. Cold reading is the act of performing lines as you read them for the very first time. It can be a nerve wracking experience, but with practice most actors can become quite adept at it. The best way to become a fluent cold reader is to read aloud as often as you can. When you cold read during your audition, do not worry if you stumble over a word or two. The important thing to remember is to stay in character. Create chemistry between you and your fellow actor. Make the casting director, and anyone else watching, believe that you are thinking and feeling the words on the page. Don t Apologize After an audition, an actor becomes his own worst critic. Often times, hopeful thespians are tempted to explain themselves to the directors. They provide excuses or even apologies in hopes of gaining sympathy. Avoid this as much as you can. Thank the casting director and leave the stage knowing that if you are right for the part, they will contact you. If not, know that you did your best. And remember: there are many other wonderful roles out there just waiting to be filled. If you wish to be considered for a speaking role as a Munchkin please use the following audition cut: MUNCHKIN MAYOR As Mayor of the Munchkin City, in the county of the land of Oz we welcome you most regally, but we have to verify it legally. To see, if she is morally, ethically, spiritually, physically, undeniably and reliably dead. Then this is a day of independ-ence for all the munchkins and their descendents. Let the joyous news be spread. The wicked old witch at last is dead! 11

12 DANCE AUDITION The dancing audition is geared for everyone. If you wish to be considered for the dance corps please indicate this on the sheet. All students are asked to try the dance audition. Bring jazz or ballet or tennis shoes and please wear comfortable clothing that allows for movement. If we have a video it will be posted on the website. WHAT TO BRING TO AUDITIONS AND TO REHEARSALS: Make sure you have ballet, jazz or tennis shoes and appropriate clothes for dancing. You may not wear tight fitting or binding clothes that are difficult to move in. Remember, you are still a part of Rochester Community Schools Code of Student Conduct. You must wear appropriate clothes for the duration of SMT. NO FLIP FLOPS or UGGS ballet or jazz shoes are fine but not necessary on stage during auditions or rehearsals. Bring a water bottle with your name clearly marked. Bring something to eat. We will have snack and water available for $1 purchase. Students, please make certain to bring a copy of your vocal cut, the 3 audition forms stapled together and the payments described below on the first day of auditions. You should also bring water and a snack every day or you can purchase these for $1 each. Wear the same type of clothing as above because we will do movement warm ups daily. If you have a script, you will need to bring that as well. We will text out the days that painting or props building will occur so you can bring the appropriate painting wear. 12
