2 FULL SYNOPSIS Frankfurt, 1946: David Bermann (Moritz Bleibtreu, Run Lola Run) is determined to make the most of the ravaged postwar era by recrui<ng some friends from a displaced persons camp to sell linens at inflated prices to unsuspec<ng Germans. Most of the group have a simple mo<va- <on: to raise the money necessary to leave Germany behind and move on to the United States. But David has a secret, and the beau<ful American Army inves<gator Sara Simon (Antje Traue, Man of Steel) is determined to uncover it. Peppered with Yiddish flavor, this picaresque comedy-drama tells the untold story of the Jewish men and woman whose grit allowed them to succeed in postwar Germany against all odds, and ul<mately paved the way for reconcilia<on. SHORT SYNOPSIS David Berman and his friends, all Holocaust survivors, have only one purpose: to go to America as soon as possible. For this they need money. Close to his aim, David is not only deprived of his savings but also overtaken by his shady past. 5 DIRECTOR S BIOGRAPHY SAM GARBARSKI With BYE BYE GERMANY, Sam Garbarski con<nues his successful collabora<on with actor Moritz Bleibtreu, who also starred in his 2013 English-language film VIJAY AND I. Garbarski s 2007 feature IRINA PALM was an interna<onal hit, distributed in over 40 countries and shown in some 30 fes<vals aqer premiering in Berlin compe<<on. Starring Marianne Faithfull, the crowd-pleaser also won pres<gious awards, including Italy s David di Donatello (Oscar equivalent) for Best European Film. Garbarski made his directorial debut with RASHEVSKI S TANGO, which screened at numerous fes<vals and won the Jewish Experience Award for Best Feature at the 2004 Jerusalem Film Fes<val. He also directed the French-language feature A DISTANT NEIGHBOR- HOOD (QUARTIER LOINTAIN), based on Jiro Tanaguchi s popular manga. His early shorts (THE TURKEY, LIFE, DEATH, SOCCER and MERRY CHRISTMAS, RACHID) were big hits at fes<vals and benefited from a wide TV broadcast. Born in Germany in 1948, but based in Belgium since the age of 22, Garbarski started his career as a commercials director, having founded the adver<sing agency Garbarski Euro RSCG. He directed more than 50 commercials, many of them award-winners in interna<onal fes<vals. Bleibtreu was born in 1971 to Hans Brenner and Monica Bleibtreu, themselves both actors. Having aeended drama schools in Rome, Paris and New York, he embarked on a stage career at Hamburg s Schauspielhaus theater. He made his screen debut in 1993 in Peter Timm s SIMPLY LOVE. His breakthrough came with Rainer Kaufmann s roman<c comedy TALK OF THE TOWN (1995) and his role as a dim-wieed gangster in Thomas Jahn s road movie, KNOCKIN ON HEAVEN S DOOR (1996), for which he received the Ernst Lubitsch Award and the Goldenes Filmband (filmstrip) for Best Suppor<ng Actor. With Tom Tykwer s RUN LOLA RUN (1997), in which he starred alongside Franka Potente, he garnered interna<onal aeen<on. 6 ANTJE TRAUE Antje Traue was born in 1981 in Mieweida, Saxony. When she was nine, her family moved to Berlin, where she had her first taste of ac<ng as part of her school s drama group. Aged 16, having relocated to Munich, she took the leading role of Vivienne in the hip-hop musical WESTEND OPERA, a project ini<ated by the Interna<onal Munich Art Lab. For four years, she toured with the company through Germany, Europe and as far afield as New York. Antje Traue s first foray into interna<onal film came with her role in Chris<an Alvart s science fic<on movie PANDORUM (2009), shot at Potsam s Babelsberg Studio and starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster. Renny Harlin cast her in his ac<on-packed war drama 5 DAYS OF WAR (2011), and she then wowed as Faora-Ul in Zack Snyder s big-budget Superman reboot, Man Of Steel (2013). In Sergej Bodrov s thriller SEVENTH SON (2015), she appeared alongside Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges. In 2014, Traue acted with Ryan Reynolds in CRIMINAL (2016). She also appeared with Friedrich Mücke and Tobias Morex in Marvin Kren s TV film, Berlin One (2016). In February, 2016, ARD screened the two-part TV movie THE CASE OF BARSCHEL (dir. Kilian Riedhof), which won accolades at the Munich Interna<onal Film Fes<val and in which Antje Traue was one of the female leads. In 2016, she was nominated for a German Film Award as Best Actress for her portrayal of Hanna Zepter in Till Franzen s TV miniseries WEINBERG. She can currently be seen on the big screen alongside Maehias Schweighöfer and Till Schweiger in the caper feature VIER GEGEN DIE BANK (based on the novel THE NIXON RE- CESSION CAPER), directed by Wolfgang Petersen, and she also has the leading role in Robert Thalheim s new feature, OLD AGENT MEN, which was released in January.! 6
