1 Independence Art Association Newsletter April 2011 Independence Art Association, Inc. meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM at The Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W Lexington, Independence, Mo The next meeting is Tuesday, Apri/19, at 7:00 PM Officers: Pat Betteridge - President Joyce Veazey - Vice President-Program ChairlNewsletter Jan Ransom-Balcom - Corresponding Secretary Konie Stillans - Recording Secretary Cheryl Bradley - Treasurer- Website Contact Erlene Flowers - Show Chairperson Chrystal Davis - Historian Emory Dillon - Quartermaster Sina Ryburn - Monthly Show Sharon Wear - Tindall Scholarship In this edition: President's Comer Upcoming Programs Monthly Schedule for Bringing Treats Art Shows Coming Up Other News..and other shows and resources George Owens Show Schedule Reminder of Monthly Show Changes Spotlight Comer Welcome Back News About Members Attachments Standing Items President's Corner: A thank you to all who participated in the Tindall Scholarship Show at George Owens Nature Park! A special thanks to those who brought the tasty food! It is not too soon to start planning on making our show next year bigger and better, with more members involved. At the closing reception Leo Fabro came by with his Indian flute and gave several of us an interesting opportunity to ask questions and look at the flute more closely. Red-circle the third Tuesday on your calendar and make the effort to come out, attend the meetings, and bring anyone who might be interested. Let them know we are here and will be having a very interesting program on Thomas Hart Benton. Last month we had several very welcome visitors at our meeting. With the longer daylight and the improving weather it should be easier to attend. Be sure to take a look at the Tindall prints which will be for sale at the meeting. The proceeds help support our Scholarship Fund.
2 Our Members' Show at Primary Colors Gallery is coming up in June. Here we are in April already! Are you thinking about what you are going to do to participate in this show? Let's make it our very immediate goal and challenge to get started. Lacking inspiration? Look around...the changing spring landscape is becoming beautiful.the sunny days, especially morning and evening, give great shadow patterns. All around us are little still life possibilities--plants, animals, people. Now the hard part-- choosing--and getting started. Wouldn't it be exciting if all our members participated! By the way are you aware of the show of Claude Monet's Water Lilies paintings which has just opened at the Nelson in the Bloch Building? Most of us have seen the large Water Lilies Painting owned by the Nelson Gallery. For the first time in more than 30 years the three panels which the artist intended to be seen together are in fact together for this show. The two other panels of the Water Lilies triptych are on loan from the St. Louis Art Museum and the Cleveland Museum or Art to join our painting. This is a monumental presentation which took my breath away when I viewed it. Be sure and drop by the GOT Art Gallery before April 25th to see the "Spring Fling" exhibit welcoming the season. If you are interested in figure drawing and having a model to work from come to the Thursday evening drawing sessions 6-9:00pm at GOT Art Gallery. Also starting Thursday, April 14th, 5-6:00pm there will be five weeks of portrait drawing instruction conducted by Pat Betteridge. To sign up or ask questions call the gallery at The address of GOT is 18 SW Third Street, Lee's Summit. Upcoming Programs April 19 - Steve Sitton, "Thomas Hart Benton - His Life and His Murals" May 17 - Sherri Haupert, "How to get into galleries" June 21 - Julie Hudspeth, Acrylic/Oil Artist, "Talk about light in your paintings" Monthly Schedule for Bringing Treats: April- Erlene Flowers, Victoria Stewart May - Marcia Pugh, Pat Betteridge June - Konie Stillans July - Picnic August - Linda Callahan We need more volunteers to help with refreshments and treats. I will bring sheet for sign up. Current IAA Show Schedule The following list of shows and events are planned for the 2011 year by Independence Art Association, Inc.
