Auditions for Disney s Aladdin Roberto Clemente Middle School Information Packet Thank you for your interest in being in the cast of Disney s Aladdin! Please read this packet thoroughly as it includes very important information. Being in a musical is a lot of fun, but it also a significant time commitment. Please only audition if you are ready to work hard! ***Important: The attached Audition/Conflict form must be turned in to Mr. Stakem with a parent signature no later than September 11 th. This form will not be accepted late and only students who have turned in this form will be considered for roles in Aladdin. Audition timeline: All of the following will take place in the Cafeteria and Music Room Friday, September 6 th & Monday, September 9 th : Audition Prep Sessions from 3:15-4:15. You must attend one of these sessions to learn the audition songs and monologues. Wednesday, September 11 th : Auditions from 3:15-6:30. You will sign up for a 15- minute time frame at the Prep Sessions. This 15-minute window is the only time you will be permitted to stay after school unless you are with another after-school activity. Students with early time frames should go home immediately following their audition, and students with later time frames should go home at the end of the school day and then come back to RCMS for their time slot. Thursday, September 12 th : Some students will be asked to attend Callbacks on this date from 3:15-5:00. Families will be notified via on Wednesday evening if their student is asked to attend Callbacks. Friday, September 13 th : Final Cast List will be posted Important Information: Show Dates: November 8 th, 9 th Conflicts: Rehearsal attendance is mandatory and students will only be excused from rehearsals if there is an emergency situation or if there is a conflict listed on the attached Audition/Conflict Form. Please be sure that the information listed on this form is completely accurate. Rehearsal calendar: A detailed Rehearsal Calendar will be provided at the first rehearsal. Principals will rehearse 2-4 days per week and ensemble will rehearse 1-3 days per week. October 28-November 10: No conflicts will be accepted during this time period. If your child is cast, please be prepared to clear his/her calendar for these two weeks.
Family Volunteers: It takes a community to raise a curtain! We are asking every family to be prepared to volunteer at least one of the two performances as well as a few hours leading up to the show. Most theatre families are wonderful about volunteering many, many hours in the weeks prior to the performances. We are only able to do quality theatre with strong family support! Mandatory Parent/Guardian Meeting: After the cast has been selected, there will be a Parent/Guardian Information Meeting on Tuesday, September 24 th at 6:00pm in the media center. It is mandatory that at least one parent/guardian of every child in the show attend this meeting. Fees: Unlike many youth theatre companies which charge up to $1,000 for participation, school theatre is produced at minimal cost to students. A flat fee of $65.00 will be collected at the beginning of the rehearsal process. This fee includes a requested donation of $30 to defer production costs, a show T-shirt, a rehearsal meal, and a Cast Party. This is not a required participation fee and families who have questions about this fee are welcome to contact one of the directors. Transportation: The Activity Bus may not be available to transport students home after every rehearsal. Families will be expected to arrange transportation on days that the Activity Bus is not running and/or if our rehearsal ends later than the time the Activity Bus leaves. Casting: Casting decisions will be made based on the needs of the show. Factors which may influence casting decisions include: pitch and quality of singing voice, projection and diction of speaking voice, attitude and energy during audition process, school attendance, classroom behavior, and academic performance and effort. Just like school athletic teams, it may not be possible to cast every student who auditions. While extreme care is taken to ensure that the audition process is fair and fun for all participants, there are always a few students who are a little disappointed based on the casting results. Please discuss these possibilities with your child as well as appropriate reactions to casting results. If a student is not cast in this production, we hope that s/he will consider joining a Technical Crew (more information will be available in mid-october) and audition for future productions. Families with questions about how their child can be better prepared for future auditions are welcome to contact us. We look forward to auditions! 3 Audition Tips 1. Be CONFIDENT! You will probably be a little nervous that s normal - but remember that we are on your side and we want you to do well. 2. Be LOUD! We are looking for actors who can be heard from the back of the theatre without a microphone. Project! 3. Speak CLEARLY! Don t mumble! Slow down actors need to speak a little slower than normal speech. Practice. 4. KNOW what you re saying! Remember it s your character who is saying these lines, not you as a RCMS student. You don t have to memorize (you can if you want) but be sure that you know what your character is saying and why s/he is saying it. If there are any words that you can t pronounce or define, look them up in the dictionary. 5. Be PROFESSIONAL! You may be asked to do something you re uncomfortable with, such as be the first person in your group to read or sing. If you complain, argue, or ask can someone else go first?, then you might not have as good of a chance of getting cast as someone else. Take direction! 6. LOOK professional! Actors tend to dress up for auditions because it makes them look professional and it makes directors take them seriously. You don t have to dress up, but it might be a good idea. 7. Be RESPONSIBLE! You will be given a monologue and some sheet music at the Prep Session. If you lose it and ask me for an extra, my first thought will be, hmm, if this student can t hold onto two pieces of paper for a few days, how will s/he hold onto a script for several weeks? Take care of yourself and your belongings. 8. ENJOY the experience! Maybe you ll get cast maybe you won t. Maybe you ll get the lead role maybe you ll be ensemble but the important thing is that you stepped out of your comfort zone to do something challenging. Enjoy the experience and don t stress yourself too much over the cast list.
Roles in Disney s ALADDIN Kids Aladdin: The hero of our show! A diamond-in-the-rough. Must be played by a sympathetic actor who sings well. Princess Jasmine: A great leader who is strong in her beliefs and is able to overcome the spoiled brat stereotype. Must sing extremely well (mix/belt to C). Genie: The magic spirit of the lamp! Must be a great actor with impeccable comic timing. Must sing well. May be played by either a boy or a girl. Jafar: The villain! A sinister vizier to the Sultan who is ruthless in his pursuit of power. Must be a strong, versatile actor. Not a major singing role. Iago: Jafar s parrot side-kick, the comic relief of the show. May be played by either a boy or a girl. Non-singing; must move well. Sultan: The doddering ruler of Agrabah; Jasmine s dizzy-yet-doting father. Nonsinging. Lamp Vendor: The likeable fast-talking salesman who serves as the principal storyteller. Must have a clear speaking voice. Not a major singing role. Featured Storytellers: 3-4 peformers with strong, clear speaking voices and good singing voices to help tell the story. Magic Carpet: Non-speaking. Must move extremely well. Gymnastics experience preferred; may be played by either a boy or a girl. Ensemble: Approximately additional students will be selected to play vendors, townspeople, magic cave spirits, palace guards, etc. Some of these ensemble members will have additional spoken dialogue or singing solos.
Disney s Aladdin Audition Form Student name Grade Student Parent/Guardian Name(s) Parent/Guardian (s) Please list addresses of accounts that are checked daily I am auditioning for (check all that apply) Any role Ensemble Specific role(s): Indicating that you are auditioning for a specific role DOES NOT guarantee that you will be considered for that role Please list all relevant performing experience: Please list the names of 1-2 RCMS teachers who will speak highly of your work ethic, maturity, and commitment: Please fill out AND SIGN the Conflict Form on the back
Conflicts Please X-out dates on which you are not available to rehearse from 3:00-6:00. If you will only miss part of a rehearsal then indicate that in the margin. Include all known AND POSSIBLE conflicts (family trips, other extracurricular activities, chorus/band concerts, etc.) SEPTEMBER OCTOBER M Tu W Th F M Tu W Th F No conflicts will be accepted between October 28 and November 10. It is imperative that we have the full cast at every rehearsal and performance during that time period. If cast, please prepare to clear your schedule for these two weeks. Clarification: Not every cast member will be called to rehearse on all of these dates, but we will be using the information you provide here to create a rehearsal schedule. Ensemble will be called 1-3 times per week and Principals will be called 2-4 times per week. All conflicts listed on this page will be considered excused, but conflicts that are NOT listed on this page will be considered UNEXCUSED unless there is an emergency reason (such as an illness which requires hospitalization). As the work we do is progressive, we must set attendance policies to ensure that every cast member is prepared to perform. Thank you for respecting this very important aspect of participation in the cast of a musical! I, the undersigned, have thoroughly read this packet of information. I authorize my student to audition for Roberto Clemente Middle School s (RCMS) production of Disney s Aladdin Kids. I have filled out the Audition/Conflict Form with accuracy and I will ensure that my student is present at all rehearsals to which s/he is called unless there is an approved conflict on file. I understand that one or more unexcused rehearsal absences may result in my student not being included in certain scenes of the show and/or being asked to leave the cast. I approve my student s image to be used in photographs and video that will be used to promote and/or commemorate the show. parent/guardian signature date student signature date
