Fairy Tale Writing Projects Remember fairy tales usually have the following elements: (Remember, they don t have to have all the elements to be considered a fairy tale.) Fairy tales begin with once upon a time and end with and they lived happily ever after. Fairy tales have a good and evil character and the good character is a type of royalty such as a queen. Fairy tales often take place in a forest, palace or town. Many times fairy tales include a type of magic. Fairy tales usually teach a lesson or have a theme. Fairy tales have a problem and solution. Complete the following fairy tale projects below that add up to 25 points: 5 Points Each: Brainstorm a list of twenty good vs. evil characters in well-known fairy tales. Make a chart to display the characters. Example: Snow White vs. Evil Queen Pretend that you have a blog and you are a fairy tale critic. Write three short reviews for three popular fairy tales that are one to two paragraphs long. Make sure you include the main characters and problem and solution for each review. Create a title for your blog. Pretend that the good and evil main characters of a fairy tale have gotten into a text message war. Determine the characters and write what the text message war would look like (two pages long). Write a one-page biography of a famous author of a famous fairy tale. Include important information such as their birthdate, full name, education, residence (where did they live) and what inspired them to write the particular fairy tale. 10 Points Each: Write a two-page fairy tale with a school principal as the evil character that uses a form of magic. Rewrite a popular traditional fairy tale so that it could take place in modern times. Add technology, modern transportation and current popular trendy names to replace the original ones. Write a fairy tale about a princess and prince that wanted to attend a school dance, but the evil playground gang attempted to keep them from attending. Use characters form your own school in the fairy tale. Recall an important or funny event that took place at your school or in your classroom this year. Rewrite the event as a fairy tale with all the elements. Write a two page Part Two version of a popular fairy tale making the good character evil and the evil character good.
HOW TO WRITE A FAIRY TALE! Do You Love These Fairy Tales? Beauty and the Beast Cinderella Little Red Riding Hood Pinocchio Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs The Three Little Pigs Have You Ever Wondered How To Write a Fairy Tale of Your Own? Once upon a time a handsome king like me. Let s Get Started! Fairy tales are special stories that are different from other kinds of stories. They start with Once Upon a Time and end with they lived happily ever after. They have good and evil characters and take place in unique areas like a forest or a castle. Sometimes a character in a fairy tale has magical powers and most fairy tales teach a valuable lesson. Follow the fairy tale rough draft template on the next page to create your own unique fairy tale.
Fairy Tale Rough Draft 1. Fairy tales always have at least one good character, or person, in the story. An example of a good character is Snow White. Fairy tales often have bad characters, too, like Cinderella's mean stepsisters. Another example of a bad character is the evil witch in Hansel and Gretel. In most fairy tales; one of the characters is royalty, which means that the person is a king, a queen, a prince, or princess. A good example of this is The Princess and the Pea. Characters may also be animals, like the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, or the bears in Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Think about who you d like your two main characters to be in your fairy tale; one good character with a royalty title, and one evil character. Use character traits to describe each of your fairy tale s main characters below. Also describe reasons why they deserve those character traits, things they will do in your story or have done in the past. Good character s Name: (royalty title included) Description: _ Evil character s Name: (royalty title included) Description: Description: _
2. Another element of a fairy tale is that the story often takes place in a castle, a forest, or a town. This is called the setting. The setting is where the fairy tale takes place. The Three Little Pigs is set in the woods, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is set in the forest. Use this space below to write a paragraph using descriptive words to describe the details of the setting of where your fairy tale is going to take place. (Most fairy tales have more than one setting such as in Cinderella; one setting is at the ball, another is at home with the stepsisters and another is in the carriage, feel free to describe each one.) Setting One: Setting Two: Setting Three: 3. One of the most important elements in a fairy tale is that they always have a problem that must be solved. For example, in the Princess and the Pea, the prince wants to find a real princess to marry. His mother, the queen, helps him find a real princess by putting a pea in the bed to find out if the princess can feel it. Use the following space to describe what the main problem of your fairy tale is going to be.
Now explain how the problem in your fairy tale will be solved: 4. Magic is often an element of fairy tales. In Cinderella, there is a fairy godmother that helps Cinderella go to the ball in a fancy dress and carriage. In Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack buys magic seeds that grow into a beanstalk. Use this space below to describe how you will include magic in your fairy tale.
5. Many times a fairy tale will teach us a lesson or have a theme. For example in Cinderella people may learn many lessons such as beauty is only skin deep or that good things happen to good people. In The Three Little Pigs a reader may learn that three heads are better than one or that it is always important to build a strong house. Write the main lesson below that you d like your readers to learn after they have read your fairy tale. 6. One of the elements of fairy tale is that they often start and end with special words like "once upon a time," "a long, long time ago," and "they lived happily ever after." When you read those words, you know that the story could be a fairy tale. Write the beginning of your fairy tale here: Once upon a time Write the ending of your fairy tale here: and they lived happily ever after. WOW! Now you re ready to start putting your fairy tale together using all the information from your rough draft. Good luck!
