The purpse f this lngtime prject is t prvide affrdable perfrmance and rehearsal space t lcal arts rganizatins thrughut Nanaim and the Regin, prvide excellent facilities fr prfessinal arts rganizatins t thrive, and t create an intimate venue t attract natinal and internatinal turing prfessinals. Our bjectives fr building this additin are: T prvide lng term sustainable perfrmance and rehearsal spaces fr the cmmunity, T prvide affrdable, prfessinal spaces fr lcal user grups, T encurage creative diversity thrughut Nanaim and the regin, T supprt prfessinal artists and cultural wrkers within the cmmunity, T attract natinal and internatinal turing prfessinals t Nanaim. It is timely and imperative t create affrdable rehearsal and perfrmance spaces fr bth lcal and prfessinal arts rganizatins in rder t stimulate grwth and creativity. The prpsed facilities will include: seat flexible, purpse-built perfrmance space: Acustically tunable as a cncert hall, Classic black-bx theatre setting, Intimate cabaret setting, Retractable seating fr flat flr use. Rehearsal spaces: 3 separate spaces available t the cmmunity, Can be used as perfrmance venues with prductin capabilities, Can be used fr meetings, wrkshp r master classes, Sprung flrs suitable fr dance, 1 space at main stage level can be used in cnjunctin with Prt Theatre events. Additinal services: Washrms n suth side f existing Prt Theatre, Small catering kitchen, Extra lading space fr main stage, Additinal lbby space accessible via Diana Krall Plaza. 1 May 12, 2014

Arts and culture are thriving in ur regin and are becming mre recgnized as imprtant ecnmic drivers. A studi theatre and rehearsal halls were identified as a cmmunity need in the riginal feasibility study by the Crnerstne Grup. Since pening in 1998, rental clients f The Prt Theatre have recgnized and expressed the need fr this space in ever increasing numbers. The creative cmmunity has als grwn, with mre grups presenting a wider variety f artistic expressins that require a smaller perfrmance venue. The design s edges and angles aren t just abut aesthetics we hpe t encurage edginess in the prgramming at the Cmmunity Perfrming Arts Centre The Cmmunity Perfrming Arts Centre s cntemprary design by Terrence Williams, wh designed the riginal Prt Theatre, perfectly cntrasts the features f the current Prt Theatre. Its edges and angles are mre than just an aesthetic statement we hpe t encurage edginess in the prgramming at the Cmmunity Perfrming Arts Centre: mre cntemprary and experimental cntent, mre diversity and inclusin, and mre artistic risk. There is value t the cmmunity and the City in creating a cmprehensive arts centre that can ffer alternative experiences frm bth lcal grups and turing prfessinals. This spring, Cuncil unanimusly passed the Cultural Plan fr a Creative Nanaim, n the heels f recgnizing Cultural Vitality as the furth pillar f sustainability. The Prt Theatre s Bard f Directrs, staff and 200+ vlunteers are cmmitted t meeting ur cmmunity s need, while serving the City. 4 THE COMMUNITY PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE FROM INCEPTION : The studi theatre/rehearsal hall was identified as a cmmunity need in the riginal feasibility study by the Crnerstne Grup. 1995: Design develpment f the rehearsal hall was pstpned s as nt t cmprmise cmpletin f the larger perfrmance hall. 1998: The Prt Theatre pened : Plans and designs fr a studi theatre cntinued. The Prt Theatre raised funds thrugh its wn capital campaign t invest in ge-technical engineering and architectural design. Technical drawings were cmpleted in : Nanaim was named a 2008 Cultural Capital f Canada by the federal gvernment. 2009: The Prt Theatre cnsulted with 23 ptential user grups t determine their needs fr the studi theatre and rehearsal spaces : The Prt Theatre created and implemented a series f intimate cncerts and perfrmances in the lbby and n stage, prving the ppularity and demand fr small-scale perfrmance space. A Cultural Plan fr a Creative Nanaim identifies the Need fr expansin f the Prt Theatre t create a studi theatre/rehearsal space cmplex 2012: The City f Nanaim adpted a Crprate Strategic Plan, which identified Cultural Vitality as the furth pillar f sustainability and the need fr a cultural plan t help guide municipal cmmitments and decisins. 2013: The Prt Theatre Sciety created a 5-year strategic plan t take the prject thrugh t cmpletin. 2013: Nanaim Ecnmic Develpment Crpratin cmpleted an Ecnmic Impact Study fr the lcal arts and culture sectr which indicated a direct, indirect and induced impact cmbined ttal f $153 millin t the prvincial ecnmy in : The City f Nanaim s A Cultural Plan fr a Creative Nanaim was develped with input frm thusands f residents and numerus cultural rganizatins. It identifies the need fr expansin f the Prt Theatre t create a studi theatre/rehearsal space cmplex. 2014: City Cuncil adpted the New Cultural Plan unanimusly. 2014: Prt Theatre undertakes Cmmunity Cnsultatin t share infrmatin as t its intentins in building the Cmmunity Perfrming Arts Centre, and t gather input frm users, stakehlders and the cmmunity. 3 May 12, 2014

Prpsed building practices include: Use f existing stne piles previusly driven, 50% fly ash in lieu f Prtland cement fr the cncrete structure, Subjecting the building t "Night Flushing" t reduce its ambient temperature, A high vlume, lw velcity ventilatin heating/cling system t insure a quiet, clean, energy-efficient interir envirnment, High perfrmance windws and an imprved building envelpe, including a green rf, t further reduce thermal gain, heat lss and imprve acustical islatin, Day lighting strategies t imprve the indr envirnment (nt usually experienced in theatres) and reduce electrical energy cnsumptin, Energy-efficient LED lighting fr the whle interir including theatre/stage huse, dressing rms and ffices, Renewable Energy ptins incrprated in the rf structure allwing fr ht water slar cllectrs and pht vltaic panels, Lw vlume dual flush tilets and waterless urinals in washrms and dressing areas, Lw VOC materials thrughut the theatre, Use f lcal materials wherever pssible, An aggressive recycling prgram t accmmdate stage and audience waste. 5 May 12, 2014

Creatin f critical mass within the Arts District Centralized density and increased ecnmic activity in the dwntwn cre with 250 r mre events annually and an average f 200 patrns per event. Animatin f Diana Krall plaza, identified as a need in the Nanaim Cultural Plan, wuld be largely reslved with lbby access frm the plaza. 5. Nurturing arts prfessinals within the cmmunity Increased arts and culture activity will allw fr arts prfessinals t thrive, allw fr creatin f mre arts-related psitins thrughut the regin, and create mre pprtunities fr students cming ut f relevant prgrams at VIU. 6. Additinal space t accmmdate current prgramming and needs at the Prt Theatre Rehearsal halls will create hlding areas fr large-scale events taking place n the main stage, including graduatins and cnvcatins, dance schl events, and cmpanies with a large number f perfrmers. Availability f rehearsal space will allw turing cmpanies t relcate rehearsals frm the large stage t ensure mre efficient use f stage time. 7. An exciting prject fr Canada s 150th birthday The Cmmunity Perfrming Arts Centre wuld be an excellent lcal and reginal prject t mark Canada s 150 th birthday celebratin in Naming pprtunity fr the City r a crprate partner 9. Shared management, technlgy and services The Prt Theatre has had many successes with naming spnsrships and lks frward t wrking in cnjunctin with the City f Nanaim t cntinue fstering this type f crprate partnership. Maximum efficiencies by having ne management team with the ability t share equipment, ffice systems, staff and resurces.
