Maximum number: 8 Tutor: John Vardis Qigong and Tai Chi are highly regarded health exercise systems that are often recommended by Chinese health practitioners. They have existed in China for more than 700 years. Benefits include improved breathing, posture, balance and muscle strength. They can also help to lower stress and improve confidence. 2 New and Repeat Courses Continued History and Travel Promoting a Healthy Local Community (New) Thu Sam Merrifield Library (10 weeks) Tutors: Bob Chalmers and other members of the Essendon Historical Society The Essendon Historical Society has again developed a special course for U3A Moonee Valley. It will focus on the development of services relating to health and recreation in the local area. Areas covered will include sanatoriums and hospitals, water supply, baby health, doctors and nurses, parks and gardens, sport and recreation, friendly societies and churches. Note: A one-off fee of $20 will be payable at the first session to cover the cost of morning teas and printing. Maximum number: 20 Writing and Literature National Theatre Live (NTL) at the Sun Theatre (New) Wed (approx.) See dates opposite. Sun Theatre, 8 Ballarat St. Yarraville (close to Yarraville Station Werribee/Williamstown line) Tutors: John Adams and Barbara Conquest National Theatre Live (NTL) is an initiative of the Royal National Theatre in London. NTL transmits by satellite live performances of productions from the National Theatre and other UK theatres to cinemas around the world, including the Sun Theatre. 3 Continuing Courses with Vacancies Discussion Groups Philosophy of Beliefs Fri Starts 21 July Tutor (acting): Maurice Majurey The aim of this discussion group is to gain an appreciation of the major religions, to provide a glimpse of their history and influence, their philosophical stance and their place in the 21 st century. No attempt is made to judge between the religions as the aim is to present facts rather than engage in argument. The tutor will choose a suitable textbook to aid discussion. Class members may be required to purchase or borrow this book. Exercise and Wellbeing Golf Thu Riverside Golf Course Petanque Wed Rosehill Park carpark Starts 19 July Wednesday Walkers Wed Maribyrnong River Walking Path Tutor: Nino Tosone Enjoy nine holes with a friendly group. Some experience is preferred although not essential and you will need your own set of clubs. A green fee of $14.30 the minimum concession rate will be payable for each round. Tutor: Alan Lewis Petanque, (pronounced pe tonk), or French bowls, is an outdoor game similar to Bocce. It is a social but competitive activity. Members are required to wear fully enclosed footwear; a sun hat and water bottle are recommended. Boules may be borrowed for four weeks and members are then expected to purchase their own. Tutors: Ann Gordon and Mary Jinkins A friendly walk of 4.25 km along the Maribyrnong River path, followed by stretching in Aberfeldie Park. Meeting place: the pedestrian crossing behind Poynton s Car Park. Join us to watch live, high-definition transmissions of works being performed in the current season, followed by refreshments and discussion at a nearby café. Operas to be performed include: 21 June: Idomeneo (Mozart) 19 July: Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky) 9 August: Der Rosenkavalier (Richard Strauss) (The program for the rest of 2017 is expected to be announced shortly.) Tickets can be purchased online or at the theatre. The cost for seniors is $20 per screening ($21 online).
