3 Welcome from the Artistic Director Drama. It s worth writing about. It s worth watching. It has three component parts: players, observers, and a story with conflict. Theatre is drama. Sport is drama. Politics is drama. Life is drama. The struggle to stay alive, the challenge to build a life, the need to make a living, the demands to adapt and change and grow. Every aspect of it is drama. This record-setting season of the Golden State Warriors was compelling drama. Can they get more regular-season wins than the Bulls did in their recordsetting season of 95-96? (They did.) Can the Warriors win the NBA title and thus consummate their dramatic record-breaking dominance? The sports world is watching. In politics, now is the summer of our discontent, made glorious drama by two history-making candidates: One of them, the first female nominee of a major party, is a fiercely political person who has been reviled and knocked down by the opposition party for two decades, and refuses to give up. The other is a fiercely non-political person who is a textbook character study in unbridled narcissism and refuses to cave in. It will surely be one of the most dramatic elections in history. The whole world is watching. The life of Muhammad Ali was riveting drama. From his earliest fights, we immediately knew he was our own version of Babe Ruth, a mythic figure in a class by himself. From the first glimpse, it was abundantly clear that he was going to be on the Mt. Rushmore of athletes (he is). When he became a conscientious objector, leading to a conviction for draft-evasion and a five year prison sentence, he didn t know if he would ever fight again (he did). His return to the ring for Ali-Frazier I was billed as the Fight of the Century (it was). When his signature speed was eclipsed by age, he used his agile brain to battle the mighty brawn of George Foreman in The Rumble in the Jungle (he won). When he avenged his first defeat in Ali-Frazier II, and then won their rubber match in The Thrilla in Manila, he dramatically reinvented himself again, and out-willed a man whose trademark was an indomitable will: Ali answered the bell in the 15th round; Frazier did not. To this day, it is widely considered the most dramatic fight in history. His talent was Ruthian, his persona was a fairy tale, and the second half of his life was filled with deeds focused on peace and love. A life of iconic drama and the world paid tribute. Redtwist does drama. Here s a sneak preview: next season will include the play which is arguably the greatest American drama in history, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, by the greatest American dramatist, Arthur Miller. Most of us already know how it ends, but it will still be dramatic, especially with our brilliant leading man, Brian Parry, as Willy Loman. It opens on Saturday, February 4, the day before the Super Bowl. It s going to be a weekend of drama in the dead of winter. SALESMAN is the cornerstone in an all-new season of dazzling drama at Redtwist. Thank you for coming! 3 Michael Colucci, Artistic Director
