1 IB THEATRE SENIORS SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2015 Yur Assignment fr the summer f 2015 will help yu t get mre and mre familiar with the assessments yu will be wrking tward next year and will especiallyl get yu started thinking abut the directr s prcess yu will d a simple versin f the DIRECTOR S NOTEBOOK, which will be ne f yur three main EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS next year. 1. G t fr a dwnladable pdf versin f the entire new IB Curriculum syllabus. Save this t a safe place fr cnstant referral next seasn! Read the material at Syllabus (p. 17) carefully fr a full explanatin f hw the elements f the curse relates t each ther. Read the Assessments sectin (p. 30) fr a full explanatin f each f the fur assessments (3 fr everyne, 1 extra fr HL). Pay particularly clse attentin t the sectin n the Directr s Ntebk (pp, 43 51). 2. T familiarize yurself with varius aspects f the directr s art, take a lk at - a page frm a Nrthern Virginia Cmmunity Cllege nline theatre curse. Familiarize yurself with the general histry f directing in the theatre, paying clse attentin t the script analysis and interpretatin sectin. 3. Lk fr and select a PLAY TEXT t study this summer. Yur play shuld be a full length published play f any style and genre - yur chice. This des nt necessarily HAVE t be yur final chice f play fr yur fficial Directr s Ntebk assessment, but it s OK t use it. 4. Here is what the IB says abut the Directr s Ntebk assessment: a. Students at HL and SL independently chse a published play text, read the text and recrd their persnal respnses. They then: 1. research and recrd the cultural and/r theretical cntext f the play and identify ideas the playwright may be addressing 2. explre the play and recrd their wn ideas regarding hw this play may be staged fr an audience 3. explain their directrial intentin(s) and explain hw this will infrm their staging f tw particular mments f the play; these can be mments f atmsphere, emtin r tensin r which cmmunicate the meaning(s) f the play; they must demnstrate an understanding f hw perfrmance and prductin elements functin tgether t create these mments 4. reference live perfrmances they have experienced and hw these have influenced, inspired r infrmed their directing f these mments. The live theatre perfrmances must nt be prductins f the same play text selected fr study in this assessment task. 5. This prcess is recrded and presented in the frm f a directr s ntebk 5. Here s what the IB says abut chsing a play text: a. Students chse a published play text that they have nt previusly studied, which they are interested in practically explring as a directr and which wuld allw them t successfully fulfill
2 the assessment requirements and criteria f the task. Students shuld have little r n previus experience f researching r practically engaging with the published play text they select fr study. b. It is expected that students will cnsult and refer t a number f play texts prir t their final selectin. It is imprtant fr teachers t allw students t select their wn play text. The key t success in this task is fr students t select a text that excites their imaginatin and that they wuld be passinate abut transfrming int actin. c. The play text must remain unaltered. Students are nt permitted t edit, make additins r alteratins t the riginal printed wrk. They may, hwever, in cmmunicating their visin fr the staging f the selected play text, add as much additinal actin r intrduce additinal elements f design if this will help them t realise their visin fr the staging. In every case this shuld be apprpriate t the play text and students must clearly identify and justify these additins. d. The play text des nt necessarily have t be set within the riginal practice r style fr which it was riginally intended. Students may wish t set the play in a cntrasting practice r style in rder t bring ut a particular idea r theme apprpriate t the wrk. e. Students are permitted t wrk with play texts written in any language. Any descriptins f plt r direct qutatins, hwever, must be translated int the language in which they are being assessed. 6. Yur summer assignment cntains THREE parts a. Select and chse a play t read this summer - this may r may nt be yur final chice fr the Directr s ntebk assignment. b. By July 20, 2015, send me an at einsteinstage@cmcast.net with a jurnal entry indicating what play yu have selected, a shrt synpsis f the piece, and thughts abut why yu have chsen this piece. c. While reading, keep a detailed jurnal f thughts, ideas, inspiratins, questins, etc. relating t the piece yu are reading. Read the play at least twice ver the summer. Lk fr vide clips f scenes and mments frm the play that yu can cmment n. This jurnal will be due at the end f the first week back in the fall. 7. As yur first big assignment f the fall, yu ll prepare a 10-minute talk abut yur piece and sme f the ideas yu ve cme up with fr creative staging. Details abut this assignment will cme when we get back in the fall - n need t wrry abut it nw. 8. Yu are welcme t brrw a few plays frm ur library but feel free t cast yur net far and wide when lking fr an apprpriate piece t study. 9. There is n jurnal template fr yu t use in keeping yur jurnal. Instead, cnsider what IB says abut jurnal writing and the Directr s Ntebk: Using the theatre jurnal in this tas k The students shuld use their theatre jurnal t dcument their initial respnses t reading the play text and research cnducted, as well as influences n their intended prcess and final prductin. The jurnal shuld als be used t recrd the thughts and ideas that cntribute t the develpment f their directrial visin. Frm the jurnal they will select, adapt and present fr submissin an anntated selectin f their research and explratin as the basis fr the directr s ntebk, fcusing n clearly cmmunicating their prcesses and justificatin fr their artistic decisins and chices. Students shuld als use the jurnal t dcument their experiences f live theatre prductins seen during the curse. Particular attentin shuld be given t hw directrs f live theatre integrate perfrmance and prductin elements t create effective mments f atmsphere, emtin, tensin r the cmmunicatin f a message.
