1 Broadway Bound Summer Intensive Monday, August 20 through Friday, August 24, am 4pm For students years old Broadway Bound is a 5-day summer intensive program, designed for musical theatre students who wish to learn more about performing professionally. Over the course of the program, students will refine and develop the skills needed to succeed in the performing arts industry. Participants will learn Broadway repertoire and about the business of theatre from Broadway actors, choreographers and directors. Students will also work on audition pieces and perform in a final showcase for a panel of theater industry professionals, casting directors, agents, friends and family. Students and parents will leave Broadway Bound with the confidence and knowledge about taking the next step in their performance career. Location: This program will take place at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post, 720 Northern Boulevard in Brookville, New York. Classes and rehearsals will take place in various theatres and classrooms at Tilles Center and on the LIU Campus. All locations are air conditioned. Students will be supervised at all times by an instructor or assistant over the age of 18. Hours: 10am 4pm Students should report to the Tilles Center Atrium no later than 9:50 am each day for check in. Dismissal will be from the Atrium at 4pm Monday- Friday. Tuition: The fee to participate in this program is $ Early Bird: $ if registration is received before April 15, Payment can be made by cash, check, or credit card by filling out the appropriate information on the registration form. Siblings that participate in the program receive a 10% discount. Skill Level: No previous music, theatre or dance experience is required for the program. During select classes, students will be placed in groups based on years of experience and skill level. Parent Session: A workshop for parents about the business of Broadway will take place on Thursday, August 23rd from 2pm 4pm. This session is optional. Please gina.ferrara@liu.edu if you wish to attend. Lunch: Lunch will take place at approximately 12:30pm each day for 30 minutes. Students are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch (an insulated lunch box with an ice pack is recommended). They may purchase lunch in the Hillwood Commons cafeteria, which offers sandwiches, pizza, drinks, salad bar, and a grill with hot food (hamburgers, hot dogs) made to order. All students will be chaperoned during the lunch hour. What to Wear: Please wear rehearsal clothes each day (loose fitting clothes that are easy to move in). Students may bring character shoes, jazz shoes or sneakers for dance classes. You may also wish to bring a sweatshirt, as the air conditioning can be chilly in less active sessions. 1

2 On Friday, August 24 Final Showcase: Women - Please bring a bright, solid color dress (No black/white/cream/gray) with appropriate undergarments and shoes you can move/perform in. You will have time to change before the final showcase. Men- Please bring a solid pair of dress pants or black jeans (No blue jeans or white pants) and a solid, brightly colored top (no black/white/cream/gray), and comfortable shoes (preferably dress shoes) you can move/perform in. You will have time to change before the final showcase. What to Bring: Please prepare and bring sheet music for both a 16 bar cut (approximately 30 seconds) and a 32 bar cut (approximately 1 minute) of contrasting songs. These song cuts must be memorized and ready to be performed in front of an audience. This can be music you have already worked on or have used in auditions, or a new piece you are ready to dig deeper into. One (1) 1 minute monologue that is age appropriate* Student s Resume cut to 8 x10 (See explanation and example below) Student s Headshot cut to 8 x10 (See explanation and example below) Pencils, Pens, Highlighters Smartphone or Voice recorder A re-fillable water bottle A sweater or sweatshirt A positive attitude, and a willingness to learn *For 16/32 Bar Sheet Music & age appropriate monologues visit Final Showcase: On Friday, August 24 at 3pm, the students will perform in a final showcase for industry professionals. Family and friends are also invited to attend. Each student will receive two complimentary tickets to the showcase; additional tickets may be purchased for $20 each. Additional tickets may be purchased in advance beginning August 20 or purchased at the door. Instructors: Heather Parcells Director of Broadway Bound Heather is a graduate of Florida State University where she received her BFA in Musical Theater. Heather teaches all around the world inspiring young students to pursue their dream. Heather will be teaching warmups, dance, acting, vocal audition technique, private coaching. She will also staging and choreograph the Final Showcase. Her Broadway/Broadway Touring credits include A Chorus Line, Chicago, Thorughly Modern Millie, Finding Neverland, Tuck Everlasting, Wonderland, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Soul Doctor. Jacob Carr Assistant Director of Broadway Bound Jacob Carr is a New York based voice teacher, pianist, and performer. He regularly coaches singers that find work on Broadway, national tours and regional theaters across the country. His approach to teaching comes from years of cross-disciplinary training in music, acting, and dance and is focused on creating sustainable habits and finding what is unique about every performer. Work as a pianist and musical director has involved collaborations with Tony Award-winning actress Joanna Gleason. New York and regional credits include the NYC concert premiere of Whistle Down the Wind, The Wild Party, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Marvelous Wonderettes. Formerly on faculty at Sam Houston State University as a voice teacher and musical director, he is passionate about empowering young people through the arts. Education includes a B.M. in Theory and Music Composition from SHSU, completion of The Esper Studio two-year professional acting program in New York, Certification in Levels I, II, and III of Somatic Voicework The LoVetri Method, and New York Vocal Coaching's 40 Hour Teacher Certification with Justin Stoney 2

5 Headshot Examples 1. Always make sure your picture looks just like you. NO GLAMOUR SHOTS 2. You do not have to spend a lot of money. Just have someone take a nice high-resolution picture on their camera or phone. 3. Outside is a great place to shoot headshots. a. Use a brick wall, or an interesting cement background that does not distract from your picture. 4. Print your headshots on a color printer. 5. Have a couple of options of facial expressions (example: serious, happy) 6. Make sure you are in focus; the background can be blurry. 5
