3 2012 STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL HANDBOOK Description The Evergreen School District Student Film Festival is designed to showcase and celebrate the creative works of our students using video technology to cooperatively construct a film. These films can be the endeavor of a classroom assignment, an after school club, or an independent venture where students are coached by a teacher. In fact all of the projects must be an original, student-created, film supported by one of our classroom teachers. Our goal is to provide an authentic venue where students have the opportunity to use today s media and technology to facilitate high-order thinking skills and problemsolving techniques, to engage in complex, collaborative tasks, within an academic setting. Once accomplished, our students will have a way to celebrate their accomplishments and strengthen the connection between school and home through our community festival. The end result will allow our students to associate their academic achievements with real-world application. It is our hope that the students will connect the things they learn in school to the important life-long skills they will need in their futures. Due to time constraints, no more than eighteen films will be selected to be move on to the festival awards. Your principal must approve your submission. 4 Awards for 2012 Awards will be based on the amount and types of film we receive, but likely categories might include: Best Film Best Documentary Best Original Story Best Animation/Best Special Effects Best Instructional Film Trophies will be awarded to the winning teams to carry back and proudly display at the team s school site. All participants and teacher coaches will also receive recognition awards and prizes from our sponsors. We may also create categories for grade levels if needed. Representing Your School The school s film festival team should include at least one teacher and two to five students. Every student on a film s production team must play an apparent, active role in the creation of the film. One teacher coach can represent more than one team, but any student participating can only be on one film team submitting a film. The Film Requirements The film should be no longer than 5 minutes including credits. The film needs to represent one of this year s film categories and reflect this year s theme [Imagine...]. All of the film s content should be original work this includes any music and any logos or artwork. Check our resources page for tips and ideas on how to find or create original work or use media from the public domain. The film should be completely created by students with help and guidance from a teacher. Student teams should be at least two people but no more than five people. If approved to represent the school by the principal, the film should be burned to a DVD and labeled as described on our DVD submission page. Every student team member will need to have a Student Video Release form completed and submitted. How to Enter By April 23, your teacher must register your intent to submit a film by ing Jamie O Brien at jobrien.eesd.org. Include: Teacher Coach s Name, Participant names and their school, title and category of film. When the film is done and approved by your principal to represent your school, submit all the paper work and DVD to Instruction by the deadline. (This includes the Film Festival Submission Form, the Student Video Release Forms for each student, and the DVD.) Please address it to Film Festival Coordinators. 2

5 Rules Film Entry The content of the movie must comply with a G rating and be suitable for all audiences. The content must also be suitable for viewing in the classroom as deemed appropriate at the sole discretion of our Film Festival Reviewing Committee. (The committee reserves the right to disqualify a movie based on their sole discretion). No violence or stunt work, or anything dangerous should be attempted for these films. Basically anything you can t do at school, should not be attempted for the film. The content of the film must be original or public domain. Do not film students or kids not on the team. Ask adults for permission to film them prior to filming them. Respect people s privacy. The film must be made by the Evergreen School District students on the team and their original work evident in the production. A student can only be on one film team. The film must not be longer than 5 minutes, including credits. The film, submission form,and the student release documents, must all be complete, appropriately formatted, and submitted on time to be qualified for entry. Once submitted, the contestants/participants grant Evergreen School District the right to publish the movie in part or in whole in any medium. Judging Rubric Scoring each film will be based on the criteria below (if the categories described earlier are feasible) and judged by a committee of educators/film experts. The highest points awarded for each category will result in the selection of the winners for that category. To what extent is the theme clearly presented? To what extent are creative and complex special effects used to enhance the film? To what extent is creative and complex animation used to create the movie? To what extent is creative and complex cinematography used to create the movie? How well developed is the screenplay? How well developed is the original story? To what extent is information and facts being interestingly portrayed in the film? How well does the film teach the audience? The Best Film will be the highest score from all categories. 3

All films selected by our review committee will be premiered that morning and all students will receive participation awards. 8 Student Video Release Form I hereby give my permission, as the parent/legal guardian of the participating student named below, to Evergreen Elementary School District (EESD) for the use and reproduction of the video footage, photographs, or voice recordings of this participating student. I understand that the use of the participant s image and voice will be primarily for the purposes of education and/or promotion by EESD. I hereby waive any right that I may have to inspect or approve the finished video product that may be used in connection herein. The signature below indicates my permission for EESD to use video footage recorded for (video name) student video, on (date), and in which (student name) s image or voice is recorded. By signing this video release form, each Student and Student s Parent/Legal Guardian hereby assigns, transfers, or otherwise conveys, all rights, titles, and interest in and to the video created for submission to the 2011 Student Film Festival to EESD, including without limitation all copyrights and other intellectual property rights therein. This video footage may be used for the following purposes: presentation in public theater(s) for the EESD Film Festival and/or Awards Ceremony Educational presentations Informational presentations at conferences or trade shows Promotional video for EESD sponsored programs that may be included in a television or Internet broadcast Video on the EESD website for the demonstration of instructional practices There is no time-limit on the validity of this release nor is there any geographic specification of where these materials may be distributed. Student and Student s Parent/Legal Guardian represents and warrants that the video created for submission to the 2012 EESD competition is original and does not infringe upon the copyright, trademark, patent or other intellectual property rights of any third party. If the video created for submission to 2012 EESD Film Festival becomes the subject of a claim, suit, or allegation of copyright, trademark, or patent infringement, EESD shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to reject or otherwise disqualify the submission. Teacher, Student, and Student s Parent/Legal Guardian agree to indemnify and hold harmless the EESD, its officers, employees, and agents from and against any and all claims, actions, costs, judgments, or damages of any type relating to the production or distribution of the video submitted to the and Awards. 10 DVD Instructions Burn the Film to a DVD Create a Play Menu for the DVD, doesn t have to be fancy. Label the DVD with a Sharpie Marker with the title, film category, school name, length of film (min:sec) and teacher coach name. See picture below. Put the DVD in a case, preferably a soft case. Ensure the film, including credits, is no longer than five minutes. Submit the DVD, Submission Form, Student Video Release Form for each and every student team member. Video in the Classroom: Closing the Achievement Gap through Video Production Matthew Needleman teaches in the LAUSD and has produced many sites that support teachers as they use technology to improve instruction. The Director in the Classroom Nikos Theodosakis has a great site that helps teachers learn to use video editing tools for student learning projects. This site is filled with VALUABLE information: glossaries, filming and sound tips, editing tips, and especially critical information to help students use video tools effectively. 12 Free, Public Domain, Music, Sounds, Images, Video Clips Free Resources from The Director in the Classroom Site The Director in the classroom site has compiled links to free resources for sound effects and music, photos and images, and video clips. The Library of Congress American Memory Project You can search by time period in history or by subject to find amazing historical photos. Public Domain Music A reference site to help identify public domain songs and public domain music... lists of public domain music, royalty free music recordings you can license, and public domain sheet music reprints... precisely the music you need for your business, organization, or personal use. Videos in the Classroom.com Video in the Classroom was founded in 2003 by Mathew Needleman to focus on video production in the elementary grades. The site was recently relaunched to showcase the work of elementary educators from across the country and provide additional how-to information, additional links, and a complete redesign.
