2 P A G E 2 the lion in winter The play opened on Broadway March 3, 1966 and starred Robert Preston and Rosemary Harris, who won a Best Actress Tony Award. Although the work is fictional and none of the dialogue and actions is historical, and there was not a Christmas Court in Chinon in 1183, the events leading up to are generally accurate. The critically acclaimed film was a commercial success ( the 12th highest grossing film of 1968 ). Katharine Hepburn ( who tied with Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl ) won a Best Actress Academy Award. Peter O Toole portrayed Henry II in his old age, but had played the same king as a young man in the film Becket just four years earlier. James Goldman also wrote the play Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole, which the Jewel Box has produced. He penned the screenplay for Nicholas and Alexandra, Robin and Marian, and White Nights.

5 P A G E 5 Q & A with James Gordon Director, The Lion in Winter 1.How much did you look into the history of this play? I am a huge history buff, so I looked into the historical aspects of the show very deeply. I want the actors and the audience to get a glimpse into the differences between then and now. But I also want them to see how similar we are to the characters. 2. It s your first show to direct by yourself. And with this play. Comments? I will not lie, I have been daunted. Overwhelmed maybe, but I have such great friends who are supportive and willing to help out if and when I ask. 3. When did you know you wanted to direct? When does any actor know they want to direct? I think it really hit me when I was in The Dark of the Moon in Florida, and the director kept saying that she had to go check the video from the last time she directed it, to see what we were supposed to do. I thought to myself, I could do better than that! 4. What part of the rehearsal process do you like best? I love when the actors are able to bring the picture I have in my head into reality. Once they get it, they are able to truly bring it to life. 5. What was your costume vision: real, or theatrical? My vision of the costumes is to be as realistic as possible. I would like to present to the audience a picture from the 12th century, not the 21st. 6. What qualities were you looking for in your Henry and Eleanor that mad you cast them? I was looking for a regal, commanding, manipulative couple. I also needed actors who would understand the comedy behind the story and could bring that out.

7 P A G E 7 ~GET FREE TICKETS WHEN YOU VOLUNTEER~ Volunteer and become part of the Jewel Box Theatre family! Choose a position for which you would like to volunteer, call us, and we ll train you! So easy, so fun, and totally free! BOX OFFICE: Greet season patrons and sell box office tickets. At intermission, sell soft drinks and our special Jewel Box blue cups. With sixteen performances per show, you can choose a week night show (7-9:30 pm, Thursday-Saturday) or a Sunday matinee (1:30-3 pm). Get a free T-Shirt, too! PAINT CREW: Choose a show or two or three, and help create the set by painting the walls, floors, doors, and more. When you see the show, you know you helped make it come to life! PROPERTIES: Help the director by finding items needed on the set, or something an actor holds in his/her hand (A tray, glasses, writing pad and pencil, a hanky, etc.). We call them props. Working properties involves organizing/maintaining props during the run of the show. COSTUMES: Work with our resident costumer, Christopher Sieker, preparing costumes for actors to try on, then maintain, iron, sew, and catalogue for the show. HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Such fun to work with stylist Jacque Mooney with wigs and make-up. We have many period pieces this season, so there will be a lot of fun to create hair styles and make-up.
