3 Welcome to Redtwist! There s no place like Redtwist anytime. Check out our site for details about our off-night (MORE RED) production, The Size of the World. And we d like to invite you at our Annual Redtwist RAVE on Tuesday, August 12, where you ll hear all about our upcoming season, and get a chance to be a star on our stage. I especially like a few specific things about a Chicago storefront, and Redtwist in particular: (a) the intimacy of this space, and being right on top of the thrilling action of a great play (b) the flexibility of our black box whereby we can redesign the stage and audience into any configuration for each show (c) our cushioned chairs they are large, sturdy, and comfy (d) our clean restrooms, and so much more. There must be a reason why Chicago theatre has become iconic. And it might be because of the very experience you will be having here at Redtwist. Grab a beverage and a snack, bring it into the theatre, and settle in for the show. Thanks for coming! 9 Note from the Director It is an honor to have the opportunity to direct another Tommy Lee Johnston world premiere play the first being AURA in 2009 at Redtwist. Tommy Lee s natural voice, his compassion for individuals who experience life s daily challenges, and his sense of humor, all come together in this gem called GEEZERS. GEEZERS explores the concept of truth. Is truth simply a fact the opposite of a lie? Is truth the meaning we place on the integrity of an action? Is truth bigger than any single moment or statement? Is it empirical or a matter of perception? Can we choose our truth? Can truth be the compilation of many experiences in our lives? As actors, we are always searching for the truth. We try to capture the essence of a character and truthfully listen and react to every scripted and unscripted moment. The irony is, while we are searching for the truth, we are pretending to be someone else. We are playing a role. But isn t that exactly what all of us do every day? What roles do we play? Mother, brother, grandson, gardener, lover, student, lawyer, artist, barista, soldier, minister, administrator, teacher, husband, programmer, consultant the list goes on and on. I believe, as we play these roles, we learn more about who we are and what it means to live a truthful life. Then the question becomes, after all is said and done, does that truth endure and have any lasting meaning? In GEEZERS, young Jack, a writer, who has lived a rather sheltered and solitary life, steps outside his comfort zone into a world with people who share a lifetime of mundane and extraordinary experiences. Jack could simply listen and document the details just the facts. The magic of this story is how he learns from their stories and places himself in the movie of their lives. His insight and perception can magnify their truths, and make them heroes of their own stories. And he has the opportunity to become the hero of his own story as do we all. We have a saying at Redtwist, You can t lie on our stage, meaning that we always have to be genuine and truthful. Our job is to tell you a story. We invite you in and want you to believe you are there with us. And because you are so close, you ll see right through us if we are lying. So we won t lie. Honest.
