Lauren Modica Mrs. Cratchit and others Jamie Moyer Ghost of Christmas Present and others John San Nicolas Marley and others Welcome to the holidays at the Armory! What are your traditions around the holidays? Do you gather? Who do you gather with? I remember my Mom whipping up this amazing storm of activity come late December that centered around a collective march to church (we were always there anyway, but as we grew older we seemed to resist her more); presents (my favorite year was when I lived in New York and first had money to buy cool stuff for everyone, including my sister s favorite perfume and a pink feather boa for my 4-year-old niece); and food (could a meal be prepared with more sturm und drang, really?). 4

And I remember vividly, the first Christmas after I had started my theater company in Atlanta (I was working seven days a week non-stop), my Grandfather pulling me to the side and saying, don t put all your eggs in one basket. He wasn t saying drop this theater stuff, but rather, don t forget your family. That s the value of the gathering isn t it? In the middle of our intensely busy lives, we give ourselves an excuse to pause, to contemplate, to give thanks for each other. At this time of year, I d like to take a moment to give thanks to you, our audience, for gathering with us here in the Armory with your friends and family to enjoy our holiday offerings. - Chris Craig Cackowski Scrooge Craig Cackowski is excited to be returning to Portland Center Stage and reprising his role as Scrooge in Twist Your Dickens. John is a proud member of Actors Equity Association. Improv has created a reputation that symbolizes spontaneity, emotion and wit through each performance. Referenced as far back as the 16 th century, improv has grown to become a 9

significant part of the theater world. Viola Spolin, theater educator, actor, director and the grandmother of improve, developed a series of theater games designed to generate spontaneous theater play between actors. Spolin inspired her son, Paul Sills, a college student at the time, to become a director and use her games with his cast. In 1955, Sills joined forces with David Shepherd to found the Compass Players, establishing the first professional improv company in the United States. Fun fact: The Compass Players was started in the back of Compass, a local bar near the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. Fast-forward to the winter of 1959 Paul Sills joined Bernard Sahlins and Howard Alk in establishing The Second City as a coffee house designed to embrace entertainment, socializing and drinking. It didn t take long for The Second City to become a favorite for visiting celebrities, eventually producing some of the most well-known comedians today marked The Second City s first Broadway run in New York that went on to earn a Tony nomination for one of its performers. The Second City has now become the largest training center for improvisation in the world with more than 13,000 students annually and schools in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto. 10

Today, a new generation of alumni from The Second City continues to expand the legacy of improv. Comedians like Steve Carell, Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert all stem from The Second City and are frequent visitors on iconic television show Saturday Night Live. First airing in 1975, Saturday Night Live has earned 41 Primetime Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, 186 Emmy nominations and has become one of the greatest shows of all time, according to TIME Magazine. But what about improv in film? Unknown to some many of the most famous movie lines were created through actors use of improv. You may recognize the lines: here s looking at you, kid notoriously improvised by Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca or here s Johnny improvised by Jack Nicholson in The Shining. These two familiar lines serve as examples of how improv continues to re-define itself and enhance the entertainment industry. Improv has grown to touch many professions outside of entertainment, in cities both large and small, including Portland. Portland is home to a growing improv community. Groups like The Liberators, Brainwaves Improv, Whiskey Tango and ComedySportz have become the strength behind the local improv movement. These groups have enabled the growth of improv in Portland, by establishing a community and following behind improv sketches. In 2014, The Stumptown Improv 11

Festival became Portland s first and only local improv festival to host local, national and international groups. Audiences can even enjoy improv performances in the Gerding Theater at the Armory on a regular basis. Portland Center Stage has created partnerships with Brad Fortier of Happy Improv Fun Time to offer Improv All-Stars events; and Bad Reputation Productions to present Slingshot, a regular night of comedy and improv. These partnerships allow us to bring many of Portland s great improv artists and comedians to the Armory, such as Nicholas Kessler, who is featured in this production of Twist Your Dickens. But this is just the start the improv movement is only going up from here. We hope you enjoy the improv in this performance! - Allyson Walters Public Relations and Marketing Intern Tell us what you think of the show! 14 Ron West Director This production marks Ron West s directing debut at Portland Center Stage. Earlier this fall, he directed The 39 Steps at the Malibu Playhouse, Quick and Dirty (which he also wrote) at The Second City Hollywood, and Fun & Other Traumatic Events (which he wrote with the renowned playwright Catherine Butterfield) at the same venue. He and Phil Swann wrote the Shakespeare-based musicals The People vs. Friar Laurence and delearious. They also collaborated on Musical Fools, based on the play by Neil Simon. On TV, Ron usually plays a guy whose first name is Doctor.
