The festival continues until Sunday, February 21, at The Patricia Theatre with a variety of international and local films. For more information go to prfilmfestival.ca. 3 Powell River is a place for filmmaking Wi t h a 16 y e a r h i s t o r y, the Powell River Film Festival has deep connections to the film community of British Columbia. Referred to as Hollywood North, Vancouver is the third largest film and television production centre in North America. Direct spending on film and television in British Columbia in 2014 was in excess of $2 billion. A recent Powell River production is Kayaking for Beginners, starring 14 year-old Ta Kaiya Blaney and Evan Adams from Tla amin Nation. When director Zoe Hopkins was scouting Powell River as a potential production location, Evan Adams contacted Festival Director Michelle Hignell. Do you have a crew list of locals who work in film, or a contact person who might give us a quick update on local people who might serve as crew?, he asked. The request for local production crew came in during our off season. These decisions are on a tight timeline so I dropped everything to provide the contacts. And they chose our location! What a plus for the Powell River region, says Michelle. Media productions such as Kayaking for Beginners bring in the dollars that crews spend locally; they also showcase our region to audiences far and wide. The production was filmed this fall on the coasts of Lund, Tla amin and the Copeland Islands and will be released soon. With more than 3,000 seats filled last year, the Powell River Film Festival provides an excellent opportuntiy to reach the local filmmaking community, industry professionals, and an audience with an interest in culture and community. One of this year s highlights is the local feature production, The End of the Road, by Tai Uhlmann and Theo Angell, documenting the migration of hippies from the US to Lund in the early 70s. The newest and best feature films, documentaries and shorts, selected from Canada and beyond, often can only be seen through festival exposure.

Our audience has grown from 270 people in 2002 to over 3,000 attending in recent years, and we attract people from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, as well as our local supporters.

4 The Festival and our community The Festival supports independent local filmmakers and when possible, screens their work during the festival. Since its inception, the Powell River Film Festival has showcased independent films and filmmakers. The newest and best feature films, documentaries and shorts, selected from Canada and beyond, often can only be seen through festival exposure. The historic Patricia Theatre is the location for our evening features and weekend matinees, with an upgraded state-of-the-art projection system. Our audience has grown from 270 people in 2002 to over 3,000 attending in recent years, and we attract people from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, as well as our local supporters. Since that first festival, we have become the Powell River Film Festival, operated by the Friends of Film Society of Powell River, which is a registered non-profit society with full charitable status. The Festival supports independent local filmmakers and when possible, screens their work during the festival. At our Adventures in Film Camp, students learn about filmmaking and discuss important social issues. The School Film Focus program is made available to all students in the region. We continually work to connect our isolated community to the world beyond our shores. Students and the general public pack the morning presentations at the Evergreen theatre, where the energy is contagious. Although the Film Festival generates a certain amount of revenue, it still depends on sponsorships, donations and grants to fully cover its expenses and keep prices low. Through our festival promotions, we are able to increase your profile within the community and beyond. Sponsors remain on the website for an average of ten months, are viewed on the big screen before each film, and are included in the free Festival Guide that s given to the public, all festival attendees and special guests.
