2 welcome to North Central College s Fine & Performing Arts Season We are thrilled to present our new lineup of artists for our Fine and Performing Arts season at North Central College. I m certain many of you are also noticing the completely new look to our brochure. We re always striving to bring you the best and most current events in the arts and our physical look is just as important. In these pages you ll find a new, crisp, bold look to some of the greatest world-class artists in the industry. From artists we ve wanted to bring you for a while to some new performers on our radar, we offer you our best season to date! We are thrilled to present The Doobie Brothers on November 15 in Pfeiffer Hall. Tickets for this concert are sure to sell out quickly so please, do not wait! The same holds true for The Tenors on December 18, Rodney Atkins on May 14 and so many others in between. We ll once again be presenting something for everyone in our great venues. The season opens with 4 Girls 4, the modern-day spin-off on the performance started by the legendary Rosemary Clooney, featuring four of Broadway s finest ladies on the same stage! Any one of these four magnificent performers would be worth the price of admission, but you will see all four on the same stage! This year would have marked the 100th birthday of Ol Blue Eyes himself, the great Frank Sinatra. So to celebrate that centennial, we are bringing you Sinatra Forever, direct from Las Vegas. Hear those great big band songs that provided the backdrop to one of the most famous voices in the industry with a man who sounds for all the world like Sinatra himself, Rick Michel. And, as you will see, the Chicago Jazz Orchestra is back by popular demand with Duke Ellington s Concert of Sacred Music as our closer to the College s annual celebration of Black History Month. One of my favorite moments since the Wentz Concert Hall has opened was the ending of David Benoit s performance with The Young Singers in the choral balcony. They had just finished a classic Christmas song when they all rang out with Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown! That was it! I was so excited to see this live! Well, David is back again this Holiday Season. We also have two performances of the Canadian Brass with its holiday show, something I have been trying to book since we started bringing shows to you. And how about one of, if not the greatest flamenco troupes in the world, Compañia Flamenca José Porcel! The best of the best in the greatest performing arts facilities in the area. And that s just the beginning of what North Central College has to offer. Combine that with the greatest staff, the most generous sponsors and Friends of the Arts and, of course, the greatest audiences we could hope for, and we once again have something truly special to bring to you this season. We hope to see you frequently throughout the coming months. Welcome back and enjoy! The North Central College Fine & Performing Arts Season is shaping up to be exciting for everyone! Thanks to our many contributors, world-renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Boys Choir, Wynton Marsalis, Celtic Woman and many more have performed in our venues. But the cost of performance tickets only covers half our expenses to bring these great artists to the College s stages. The generous support from the Friends of the Arts ensures the College can continue to bring world-class performers to our world-class venues. Herbeck Wulfers Paquette Kuchinski Heinrich Barton Marina Kuchinski AUGUST 14 - OCTOBER 11 For Only For Only presented by sculptor Marina Kuchinski is a one-person exhibition that explores animality through our relationship with animals and, more broadly, our relationship with the Other. The desire to discover what is animal also leads to a greater understanding of what it means to be human. Ed Herbeck and Yves Paquette OCTOBER 16 - DECEMBER 6 Land up High Paintings that explore distances and reveal light between the heavens and the earth. - Ed Herbeck Works from L hiver blue series are abstracted domestic forms that have been reformulated in composition and frozen by their glazed surfaces. - Yves Paquette Charlie Heinrich DECEMBER 11 - JANUARY 31 Since Charlie Heinrich s travels to the back roads of America, he has been exploring two related themes for the last couple of years utilizing words (old discarded books and letters and ephemera to make faces), anthropomorphizing objects and literally reading faces. Monika Wulfers 68 FEBRUARY 5 - MARCH 27 Monika Wulfers LINES Monika Wulfers light drawings integrate the painterly concept of foreshortening into sculpture. Although each light line is of equal length, this is not what the viewer sees. Wulfers is a 1968 graduate of North Central College. North Central College Art Department APRIL 1 - MAY 29 Faculty Group Show Michael Barton JUNE 3 - JULY 24 Ordinary Michael Barton s body of work created for this collection is visual art that fuses his passion for woodworking, photography and obsession with ordinary objects. The materials he uses are storytelling elements that take the work beyond an image that is simply archived on a piece of cloth or fine paper. Artist Receptions Meet the artists, shake their hands and ask them questions at artist receptions. Light appetizers are served and the events are free and open to the public. Zee Schwieger Wallace Taylor Stella Zee AUGUST 24 - OCTOBER 8 Stella Zee invites viewers to enter a light-infused, enveloping environment by miniaturizing themselves. The presence of the animals is significant, symbolic of how their instinctive power has healing qualities that nurture our spirits. Robert Schwieger OCTOBER 11 - DECEMBER 3 Screenprinting, silkscreening and serigraphy are all variations on a stencil process that enjoys a healthy history and provides printmakers with an exciting avenue to the creative process. It illustrates the flexibility of the medium by providing artists like Robert Schwieger with methods to imprint various substrates, including paper and glass, both two and three dimensionally. Ian Wallace DECEMBER 6 - JANUARY 28 Whether it is a conceptual idea, word or beautiful subject, Ian Wallace transfers what images take over his attention into painting. They will stimulate and inspire you to take action. Wallace wants the viewer to leave with heightened sensations of the people around them: ambient, assenting and awoken. Madai Taylor JANUARY 31 - MARCH 17 Madai Taylor s work addresses themes of disintegration, regeneration and reproduction through an emphasis on organic materials and natural forms, using earth.
