2 Dear Directors, Congratulations on advancing from your bi-district UIL One-Act Play contest. The Area 1 contest for your region will be held at Marshall High School in San Antonio on Saturday, April 9 th. In order to allow for sufficient unload time and to allow contestants to get acquainted with a new facility, I have scheduled three (3) technical rehearsals after school on Friday, April 8 th and the other three (3) on Saturday morning, April 9 th. Please call me as soon as possible to set up your rehearsal time. The performance schedule is based on a blind draw and the order is enclosed here in the packet. The first play to perform will be Bi-District B (27-28) Title B, or the advancing play from Bi-District B whose play title begins with a letter that is alphabetically between the other two play titles from Bi-District B. Please use the alphabetical rule to determine your performance time. Curtain time for the first show will be 2:00 pm, and all shows will run back-to-back. As soon as possible after you advance, please mail a legal copy of your script to each of the three panel judges listed below and include on your return address 5A-Region IV-Area 1. Do not send scripts return-receipt or special delivery because that will actually slow down the delivery process. Box 308 Bronte, Texas Also, please remember to bring the following items with you to your technical rehearsal: Publisher permission to produce cutting/scenes from for UIL one-act play Proof of royalty payment made to the publisher (purchase order, copy of check, etc.) Permission from UIL to produce plays not on the list of approved plays (if necessary) Permission for special additions to contest set and basic scenery (if necessary) Community Standards Certificated signed by your principal, administrator, or superintendent Music Log signed by OAP director Official legal script with cuts and/or highlights (in addition to scripts mailed to panel judges) Check made payable to John Marshall High School for entry fee of $750 As you will see from the enclosed stage drawings, we have an orchestra pit at Marshall and a very large apron. In fact, the distance from the first row of house seats to the proscenium line is almost 30 feet. Consequently, we will apply the architectural necessity rule and disregard the grand drape, so set-up will be done with the curtain open. As the contest manager, I will take a moment after each school has finished its seven-minute set-up to remind patrons about house rules and to introduce each play. After my introduction, the 60-seconds-to-start will begin. Most other technical questions should be answered by the information in this packet. 3 Contest Schedule Contestants are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to rehearsal time in order to unload props, meet host staff, go to the restroom, etc. The extra 15 minutes added to the rehearsal hour allows each school to practice the transition from set-up and contest manager s announcement to the beginning of the show with the curtain open. Contestants for the first show will be escorted to set up at approximately 1:45 pm to begin set-up at 1:52 pm. In any case, schools are asked to load out and clean rooms before the awards and critiques. Thank you!
4 Other Information Program Copy Please your program information in PDF format as soon as possible, but no later than Monday, April 4, 2016 to Admission & Concessions Shows will be open to the public and general admission will be $5.00. Each company will be given tickets for all their cast, crew, alternates, and directors. The Marshall Drama students will also be running a concession stand in the auditorium lobby beginning at 11:00 am. Students will be selling pizza, hot dogs, nachos, snacks, fruit, and drinks. Load-In & Storage Companies will load in thru the overhead door on the north side of the auditorium. There is a short and narrow drive-way leading up to the door without a loading dock. Companies will be greeted by a host and will load into the scene shop before moving onto the stage. Storage space is very limited, but schools will be given as much space as possible for their properties. Parking On Saturday, companies may park their buses and other vehicles in the front parking lot of the school or behind the auditorium in the school bus loop area. Friday evening will be more difficult until the school traffic has cleared. Waiting & Dressing Rooms International language classrooms in the C-Building, adjacent to the D-Building, will be used as waiting and dressing rooms for the contestants. Hosts will escort companies to and from their waiting rooms as necessary, and will keep companies informed in regard to time. Companies are encouraged to bring trash bags and cleaning supplies to help clean the rooms at the end of the contest. 5 Stage Floor Plan Stage Architecture The Marshall auditorium is equipped with a 10 deep hydraulic orchestra pit, and its cover extends the depth of the apron an additional 12 for a total of 28 feet from the act curtain. Due to the extensive depth of the apron, all schools competing in UIL one-act play contests are allowed to set UIL unit set pieces below the proscenium line, and all schools will set up with the act curtain open. As indicated on the floor plan, the orchestra pit cover will be used as an acting area, but with fewer lighting areas. There are a total of 18 acting areas, each lighted individually. See the lighting plot for more information on stage lighting. The judges may or may not leave the auditorium after during the set and strike period. All schools are reminded that the 7-minute set-up must done out of character. Choreographed set-up are not allowed. A choreographed set-up is considered the beginning of a production, so time-keepers are instructed to begin timing the 40-minute peformance.
6 Light Plot & Equipment Lighting Plot Notes As indicated on the stage floor plan, the orchestra pit cover will be used as an acting area, but with fewer individual spots. There will be a total of 18 areas, as well as washes of white, blue, red, and amber lights. There is also a cyc curtain that can be washed in red, blue, and green. Lighting Equipment The Marshall auditorium is equipped with a state-of-the-art ETC Eos fully integrated lighting control system. The channels on the light board correspond to the lighting areas on the stage, and operators have the choice of running lights on pre-set faders or as cues saved to files. Pre-set faders, or submasters, are limited to 10 looks per page, but 30 pages are available per show file. Faders and submasters can be run easily by hand as sliders on the light board. A lighting technician will be on hand to assist with the operation of the lighting control board. Sound Equipment Sound may be run from a single CD in the lighting control room, or from the backstage console by a company member. Schools are also welcome to bring their own sound equipment to run sound from backstage as well.
7 Auditorium Location & Layout Bus Loop Parking Load-In Lobo Lane (1-way) Location of the Auditorium The Marshall auditorium is the newest building on campus and is located on the north end of the school property. You will enter the campus from Eckhert Road and turn left at the front of the school on Lobo Lane. Go past the auditorium on the right and continue around on Deer Lane to find the load-in entrance facing north. There is a very short and narrow driveway where visitors can unload vehicles directly into the scene shop. The bus loop parking is only a few hundred feet past the load-in door. Visitor & Patron Parking Visitors should note that Lobo Lane is one-way in front of the school. Patrons who enter the auditorium through the front lobby should park in the front parking lot.
8 Seating Layout & Capacity 978 seats + 11 wheelchair spaces = 989 seats Side House Entrances Side House Entrances Do not climb the stairs! (unless you want exercise) Front Lobby When patrons enter the front lobby, they will find the ticket booth in the left hallway. There is no need to climb the stairs in the front lobby. Patrons can find all seats in the house by entering through the side entrances down each hallway. The men s restroom in past the ticket booth in the left hallway, and the family and women s restroom is in the right hallway. Admire the beauty of the lobby but climb the stairs only if you want to elevate your cardio. Please inform your friends, family, and relatives how to enter the house.
